Hey there, loved reading your story till now, good pace and writing; by the way I understood from your intro that you wrote two more before this, would you mind giving links to those two?
Chapter 8
Maan closed the door and walked towards his table but stopped and looked back. He pulled out his cell phone from his pocket and called Dev.
"Yes Veerji", answered Dev, in one ring.
"Give the farmhouse project to Miss Geet Handa", he said.
"But Veerji, you haven't looked through the other designs", said Dev, surprised, how Maan had concluded so quickly.
"Dev, I think before making a decision, not after making it", he said and hung-up.
Maan's phone rang and he did not realize. He still thought of the decision he had made that day- which changed his life forever. His phone kept ringing and Maan got irritated and picked it up without even seeing who was calling him.
He heard a voice on the other side say, "Yeh phone nahi uta rahe"
"Phone uta chooka hoon, Geet, aage bolo", said Maan, not taking even a second to recognize the voice. How would he not recognize the voice- that became the centre of his life and in fact, universe.
"Maan", she said, softly. She sat on the terrace of her house in HP, dressed in a white sari. The cool breezes blew her curls onto her face and she did not bother to adjust them.
"Did he take the call Geet?", called Daadiji from the courtyard. Geet looked down to see her Family and her in laws family sit on the jute cots in their backyard.
"Ji", she said.
"Ok talk to him and ask him to call me", said Daadima, and got back to talking to Geet's Daadima.
Before Geet could speak another word, Dev called out from downstairs, "Bhabhi ji, convey my regards as well" and winked. Maan took a deep breath and waited patiently for her to say something.
"Mine too", said Naintara and Maan lost his patience.
"Geet", he yelled and she held the pit wall tightly to prevent herself from rolling down. "I got everyone's messages, now can you get to the point?", he asked her raising his voice.
"Maan", she said, softly and he melted at once, at the softness in her voice.
"Yes", he said. She smiled.
"You haven't called?", she asked.
"Was I supposed to call?", he asked.
"Well, we did not tell you where we were going and we just disappeared. So atleast for the sake of finding out how we were doing you know- I thought you would call"
"Hmmm", is all he said.
"What?", she asked.
"What?", he in turn asked.
"Why dint you call?", she asked again. "I don't understand how you can stay that way- completely unaffected, disinterested, absolutely no curiosity", she said angrily.
He did not answer, That's how he's always been. And he knew he would never change. He cared- but he never showed. If he did- then Geet would have by now known how much he loved her and at that particular moment how much he missed her. He cared for everyone in his family- but never expressed- indeed never felt the need to. His Daadima understood him, and his brother did- his assumptions are Geet would understand him someday too. And he strongly felt the day was not far.
"What are you dreaming now?", she asked.
"Geet, is that a question to ask at all? Whenever I hear your voice- honey, how can I dream? It will all be only nightmares", he said.
"I'll kill" and stopped and quickly changed the subject, "So, back to my question- what kept you so busy that you did not even bother to call?"
"So, that's whats troubling you huh- Me not calling you?"
Though Geet wanted to say "yes", she refused to say so. "No, you haven't even called Daadiji. Atleast for the sake of courtesy shouldn't you be calling her and finding out how she is doing? Your ego Mr. Khurana is taller than the tallest building in the world"
"And deeper than the deepest ocean in the world Geet", he said and smirked. "Any ways to answer your question, its been a busy day- had a couple of meetings and conference calls. Thought I'll come back and talk- but I find the house empty. And talking of courtesy Geet- don't you think you should have told me where you were going before just leaving the house?", he asked.
"Well, Daadiji told you the other day and'"
"I'm not talking about her- I'm talking about you", he said.
"But you dint call her also"
"Geet, you very well know and I know it too, that right now you are more upset about me not calling you to find out why everyone vanished from the house. So let's deal with that first", he said.
She was caught. She knew if he actually started his argument- most of the times she wouldn't have anything to say.
"I'll call Daadima after I finish talking to you. I would have anyway done it and I always do it- talk to her before my day ends", he said.
"Sweet", she thought in her mind but did not say it aloud.
"So", he said and brought her back to where the conversation ended. "Where were we?", he asked, deliberately.
"Ahh'", she said, searching for words, "I dunno", she said.
"But I do, sweetheart. You being upset about me not calling", he said and chuckled.
"I am not upset", she said, irritated.
"Good to know. But can we have the truth now?", he asked.
"That's the truth", she said.
"Ok. I'll take it then. So, why did all of you head to your home town?", he asked.
"Well, you should have also come", she said.
"Geet, if I knew the reasons- I would have thought of it", he said.
"I'm an aunt now, Maan. Brij Veerji and bhabhi have a baby boy. So, daadiji invited all of us to see the baby and attend the naming ceremony. After Heer- this baby is the first kid in the family after almost twenty years. As always you missed a function in my house", she complained. Heer was Geet's younger sister and Brij was their older brither- married to a very simple and beautiful girl from the neighboring village in Punjab. After five years of their marriage-, they had a baby boy and it was an occasion for the family to celebrate.
"I see", he said cooly. "Well congratulate your veerji and bhabhi on my behalf".
"Hmmm", she said. There was silence for sometime and she asked, "Dinner kiya?"
"Not yet", he said. "Will have some time later"
"Later? Its pretty late", she said.
"Hmmm, I will, I will", he said. "Anything else Geet?" he asked. "I think I should call Daadima now- before she goes to bed", he said.
"Will you call me ag'" and stopped and said, "Ok, take care. Bye".
"Bye Geet", said Maan, having heard the question she had asked and also not asked- by saying something else.
Geet put the phone to the side and looked down at the people sitting in the back yard and singing songs.
She saw Daadima answer the call and smiled. She then saw Daadima talk to Maan. While she looked at Daadima talk to Maan, Heer called out to her, "Di, aapko wahin rehni hain kya?Neeche aayiye".
"Arey she wont come. She's still recollecting all the sweet talks with bro", said Dev and all of them busted out laughing.
"Non-sense", shouted out Geet from top and was about to move away from the pit wall to go and join the rest of them- when her phone rang and to her surprise it was her husband.
She stared at the phone with her eyes wide open. She answered the call.
"You called back again?", she asked, answering the call.
"Speaking of courtesy Geet- shouldn't you have said a "hi" or a "hello" when answering a call", he taunted her.
"Hello Maan", she said, sarcastically.
"Good. Now tell me Geet- what else?"
"Nothing else. Packed tomorrow also is it- your office schedule?", she asked.
"Depends- Dunno what Sasha has planned", he said. Maan did not mean to make her jealous. He said it without giving it much thought- only thinking on the lines of meetings and work.
"I thought Shreyasi was your secretary. Since when has your chief architect taken up a double role? And by the way- tomorrow is a Saturday and it's a holiday for your office I suppose", she asked.
Maan smiled. "Geet, ok, forget it. How is the baby boy doing now?", he asked.
"Great. He's so cute Maan. Absolutely cute and adorable", she said, with her voice brimming in happiness. Maan could feel her happiness and he heard it in her voice. She then went on to tell about how she played with the baby, how she had to handle him delicately and gently, and how she was scared to take him in her hands for the first time. And all Maan did, was smile as he heard her explain in detail as though he was actually seeing the scene play in front of his eyes.
"Awww, it's just a beautiful feeling Maan", she said, "I feel so happy that I could make it and see my nephew", she said, happily.
Maan continued to smile. "Maan are you there?", she asked.
"Yes Geet- very much here", he said.
She did not say anything. Neither did him.
She finally took a deep breath and said, "How long can you stay silent like this without speaking a word?", she asked.
"As long as you are willing to speak", he said.
Geet felt her heart skip a beat. She shifted uncomfortably in her place and took the phone away from her ear, looking away into the darkness beyond the light that fell from her house premises.
"Maan", she said.
"Geet, I'm here. I think you should sleep now. I'll also go and have dinner and catch some sleep. Its been a hectic week", he said.
"Ok!", she said and continued, "Before putting down the phone, do you, by any chance, have anything interesting to tell?", she asked.
"What is your definition of interesting?", he asked.
"Anything- gossip, politics, Sasha etc etc'.", she said.
Maan laughed and said, "Well I dunno if this news falls into your interesting band or not- but a couple of minutes back Geet- I had received a CV from Aayush R. Singhal", he said.
"What?", she said, shocked and surprised. "You know him?", she asked.
"Do you know him?", he asked.
Geet was silent for a few seconds but Maan wanted the answer. He waited for her to say something. It was high time she said it.
"Yes, I do", she said, softly.
"Ok!", he said, that's all he wanted to know for the time being. How she knew and why she knew him- he would elicit from her later on- though he knew all the answers and the questions that were right playing in Geet's mind- but Geet was unaware that Maan was aware of- quite a bit of details.
"So, Geet- good night then", he said.
"Ahh.. Maan hold on", she said.
"Yea tell me", he said.
"Maan, how do you know this person?", she asked.
"Geet, I know him as an assistant professor in Delhi university. Once or twice Shreyasi had mentioned about him. And that he was also connected to your batch in some way. I never bothered though. Not that I bother now", he clarified.
"Yea, he taught us Architectural Graphics. But what post is he applying for- in KC?", she asked.
"Geet- I don't know and seriously I don't really look into such stuff. The HR will take care", he said.
"Yea- of course! You're right", she said.
"Ok then", he said.
"Yea! Good night", she said and hung up. She seemed to be a little worried and concerned somewhere.
She slowly got up, walked to the other side of the terrace, and stared at some random things in the backyard of their neighbors. She quickly called her best friend- Niharika.
"Hi Beautiful", answered Niharika. Niharika and Geet were friends from college days and though they knew each other for the last four years-, it seemed like they've known each other forever. They understood each other very well, got along them and also stood by each other. Geet shared the deepest of her feelings with Niharika and so was the case with Niharika.
"Beautiful nahin, ugly situation hain bhai", said Geet.
"Oho Geet, phir se tension- Maan ke saath reh kar in teen mahino mein kuch nahi sikhi"
"Niharika see this is important. So, if you don't mind= could you please just listen quietly", asked Geet, not in a mood to divert.
"Geet, all these years what do you think I've been doing- listening only know to all your bakwaas", she said and started laughing.
"Ok bye", said Geet, threatening her to hang up, though she knew she would not hang up any time soon.
"Accha baba go on!", said Niharika.
"Where are you?", asked Geet, checking her watch.
"At home, just finished dinner", she said. "Anyways, go on!"
"Today, Maan spoke about Aayush", said Geet, pausing for a few minutes.
"Hmmm, so?", asked Niharika.
"What so- do you know what that means?", she asked.
"What? The end of the world is it?", taunted Niharika.
"Nihu", shouted Geet angrily.
"Geet, so what if Maan spoke about him? What did he say?", she asked. Niharika was usually a level-headed and cool girl when it came to most of the matters unlike Geet who would stress out almost immediately.
"He just told me that he had received Aayush's CV for some position in KC", said Geet.
"Ok!", said Niharika. Geet did not say anything.
Niharika took a deep breath and asked, "What is it Geet?"
Geet did not know either. "I dunno Nihu. I did not like the way he asked if I knew Aayush".
"What's wrong in asking you if you knew someone or not?", she asked.
"Hmmm nothing wrong- but still".
"Geet, I sometimes feel you are under-estimating Maan. I told you this couple of times. Speak to him frankly- don't hide anything from him. Geet, you and me might think no one else knows what happened in the past. But I feel Maan knows everything too. HE;s just waiting for you to open up and be candid".
"I don't think he knows anything," said Geet.
"That's where you are making a mistake Geet. We are talking of Maan Singh Khurana, Geet- The Maan Singh Khurana. He goes beyond our imaginations. As innocent and disinterested he might seem- you think he would not know what is happening in the lives of people around him?"
"Hmmm but he never tells me anything or talks anything about it".
"That is because he wants you to go and talk to him. Geet, and he is not expecting anything big".
"What do I do now?", asked Geet.
"Where are you now? Wherever you are- just go and talk to Maan", she said.
"But I'm in HP and Maan's in Delhi", said Geet.
"What are you doing in HP all of a sudden? Woman- you did not even tell me- absolutely no courtesy".
"Abey oye now you don't lecture me about courtesy. By mistake I taunted him on that- and throughout our phone conversation- he kept hitting this word back at me", she said.
"Oh! Long distance calls huh?", asked Niharika, laughing.
"Shut up", said Geet.
"What's wrong in that bhai- HP to Delhi is long distance isn't it and such telephone calls are called long-distance calls. What's wrong with you Geet? Basic stuff you seem to have forgotten".
"Oh whatever. I came here to see my nephew. I told you know, Brij veerji's baby boy"
"Oh yes yes!", said Niharika, smiling. "So when you heading back then?"
