Hello Everyone,
"Oh whatever. I came here to see my nephew. I told you know, Brij veerji's baby boy"
"Oh yes yes!", said Niharika, smiling. "So when you heading back then?"
"Dunno, maybe three of four days. I don't feel like going back".
"Hmmm, you don't have choices there, do you?" asked Niharika, while trying to chop some vegetables for lunch next day.
"What are you doing?"
"Chopping vege's" , she said, shifting the phone from one ear to another.
"Hmmm, ok", she said.
"Geet, by the way, next weekend, there is a party at my place. So, you have to come. Please mark this on your calendar and don't give me excuses later on"
"Excuse me, look who's talking? I give excuses huh? You're the one who gives excuses always. Anyways, tu balao aur main na aau aisa kabhi hua meri jaan?"
"Hmmm, that was before wedding sweety. Ab teri shaadi ho gayi, aur who bhi Maan Singh Khurana se, ab kahan tu aur kahan main"
"Chup. Bakwaas mat kar. Chal rak phone ab", said Geet, who still believed that she was the same Geet like before- though she was married in to one of the richest families in the country. She always wanted to keep it simple and middle-class- irrespective of what happens.
"Ok good night", said Niharika and hung up, laughing. She loved irritating Geet and teasing her these days about Maan.
"Oh, this place is just so peaceful Devanshi", said Daadiji, speaking to Geet's Grandmother Devanshi Handa.
"Yes it is". Said Devanshi. They were all sitting in the courtyard. Naintara and Geet's bhabhi were taking care of the baby while Dev, Brij and Geet's father were talking about farms and farm houses. Though Dev had no connection to HP, except that his sister-in-law Geet is from this place- he somehow liked this place and always wanted to own a few hectares of land and build a farmhouse there- so that they could take some time off from their hectic schedules in Delhi and relax here. Naintara was from Hyderabad, which was just another busy Indian city- so Dev never considered buying any property there. Plus, what worked well for him with HP- is that he knew he could trust and also entrust certain activities to Brij who was willing to accept them and take care of the Khurana's property.
"Maan should have come too", said Devanshi, looking at Geet walk into the courtyard.
"Well, you know how he is- always busy and always boring", said Daadiji, and both of them started laughing.
Devanshi and Daadiji were friends for over 40 years. They had seen each of their children grow and take up greater responsibilities in life- especially Maan. However, the kids of the Handas and Khuranas hardly met or socialized with each other. They hardly knew each other until Geet's wedding to Maan and they did not even know that Devanshi and Daadima were good friends. Maan was 18 when his parents died in a road accident. He was in college then- but having seen his Daadi struggle with handling the family and the business- he had no choice but to give up college for some time and take up the responsibility of his family business.
Maan's brother Dev was 15 years then and their sister Kiara was only 10 years old. Daadima had also suffered from a heart attack just before her son's death and Maan was even more worried. He took into his hands the entire Khurana business, which was then only a 3000 crore empire and made it ten folds in the next few years. He not only managed his business empire but also his family- stood by them and made them successful people. Dev had graduated from one of the best business schools in the country and Kiara was currently pursuing her studies in London School of Economics- the school Maan had dropped out of- to fulfill his family responsibilities. That was a decision he never regretted and ensured that Daadima never regretted having to put him through so much at such a young age.
What no one imagined was= that Maan and Geet- would get married. Devanshi had never asked about Maan's wedding and Daadima also never bothered to talk of Maan's wedding as he always refused to get married. He either gave excuses for not getting married or changed the topic every time it came up in the family.
"Geet aur Maan khush hain na Savitri?", asked Devanshi.
Daadima looked at Devanshi and smiled. "What do you think?"
"I don't know. Sometimes, I get worried thinking about how their wedding happened so fast and how every thing changed so soon".
"Haan its true that the wedding was a quick affair but don't worry- they are matured enough to make it all work and as far as my Maan is concerned- he has never let me down- Devanshi. He has always gone beyond what was expected of him. He will take wonderful care of Geet and I'm sure Geet will do the same. They just need some time", said Daadima, truly believing every word she said.
They turned to look at the men- who were rolling in laughter at some joke Dev had cracked.
"My family also is very strange. One grandson did not want to get married and I was worried he'll remain a bachelor all life- Thanks to Geet- who broke that fear I had. And the other grandson was such a such a flirt- that I was worried he might end up marrying more than once" and winked.
Devanshi could not control her laugh and it was everyone else's turn to look at them now.
"Ahaan, you women seem to be having more than fun than us", said Dev who standing against the well on the other side.
"Oh we always had more fun than all of you, Son", said Savitri. "Your generation is only stuck with Ipads, Audis and work", she taunted.
"Oh Daadiji, not again", said Dev.
"Alright alright", she said, winking. "Now tell me, when do we head back to Delhi. I'm worried about my grandson", she said.
"Excuse me?", said Dev, "your grandson? SO, what am I then?", he asked, pretending to look angry.
"Ah well, ok! I'm worried about my grandson who's stuck in Delhi", said Daadima, smiling.
Dev said, "Daadiji you shouldn't be worried about Bro, you should be worried about the helpers in your mansion and the people in the office. They must be going haywire because of veerji's strange orders and ridiculous schedules".
"There you are right", added Geet quickly. "Pata nahin kya haal ho ra hoga un logon ka"
Devanshi hissed, "Geet"
"Oh its ok Devanshi. We love teasing each other in the family and Maan is like one of our prime targets- cos he always taunts and uses sarcasm as his first language most of the times", said Daadima.
"First Language?", asked Geet's sister- Heer surprised.
"Haan beti. Tum apne jeeju ko nahin jaanti", said Daadima, with a lopsided smile. "The only person in the family he does not taunt is Naintara"
"That's because she speaks to him very respectfully", said Dev, smirking, "Kyun Naintara? Kahiye Veerji, nashta taiyyar hain Veerji, aayiye Veerji, jaaeye Veerji", he imitated her.
Naintara rolled her eyes and said, "Cut it out Dev" and everyone laughed. "Acche hain mere Veerji".
"Hmmm, ok ji. Aap aur aapke Veerji- dono ko mera pranaam", said Dev.
"chalo ab, sona nahin hain kisi ko?", asked Geet's mom.
"Nahin aunty ji", said Dev, "Hum HP sone ke liye thodi na aaye hain?"
"Tuo kya karna hain aapko devar ji?", asked Geet.
"Arey jo bhi hain- nach ghaana, thoda masti aur thoda daaru", he said, uttering the last words very softly so that only brij could here. Both of them looked at each other and hi-fived.
"What?", asked Geet's bhabhi, suspiciously looking at both of them.
"Kuch nahin", said Brij.
"Hold on hold every one. Dev, first tell me what the plan is? How long are we here, accordingly I'll have to tell Maan also", said Daadiji.
"Tell him what?", asked Dev.
"Arey about our return bhai. We did not even tell him when he left Delhi", said Geet.
"Ahaan, you seem to be very concerned that we did not tell Veerji, Geet", said Naintara, suppressing a smile.
"Aisa kuch nahin hain. He lectured me on courtesy and manners and etc etc. I don't want any more of them you know", answered Geet.
"Waah Di, he only lectured you is it?", asked Heer.
"That's because no one else spoke to him", shot back Geet.
"So, who asked you to go up to the terrace and again speak to him?", she asked, laughing. "Weren't you inviting him to taunt you and lecture you", she said. Dev laughed and hi-fived HEer.
"Oh whatever", said Geet thinking, "Har jagah main phas jaati hoon".
"Ok Ok now all of you. Dev could you please answer?", said Daadima, saving Geet from further teasing.
Dev thought for a while and said, "How about tomorrow morning?"
"What?", screamed Naintara, Geet and Heer. "Kya?", screamed Brij, Geet's parents and bhabhi. The only two people who did not say anything but looked equally surprised were Devanshi and Daadiji.
"Dev, are you serious?", asked Naintara.
"Hmmm, ah well sweetheart. What do you think?", asked Dev.
"Dev, please don't beat about the bush", said Naintara.
"See, its up to you women to decide. I'm ok going back tomorrow too. And actually day after there is an important meeting that Veerji, sasha and me had to attend. But if you women aren't prepared to go back so soon- then I'll have to tell Veerji well, in advance that only Sasha and he will have to take care".
"But wouldn't that anger him?", asked Geet.
"Hmmm, well, not really", he said.
"Oh c'mon", said Daadiji, "Now you're joking. Maan being ok about you not attending an important meeting is like the possible thing to happen", said Daadiji. "We'll have to head back tomorrow only".
Geet did not look really excited about the whole idea. They were in HP only for a day.
"Daadi you gotta trust me on this. He is going to be fine", said Dev.
"Dev, I'm not going to believe this", said Naintara. "When I don't believe it myself, how is Daadiji going to believe it? Don't we all know how particular Veerji is about his work?"
"Ohhooo Naintara", said Dev, losing patience. He quickly pulled out his phone from his pocket and said, "Here is the proof. Listen now". He read out one of the messages Maan had sent to Dev
"I had told Maan Veerji that we were in HP after he had reached the mansion and found out all of us were gone. HE had asked me where we were, though he did not ask me why we were in HP"
"The message I sent him is :Bro we're in HP. Started today from Delhi- not sure about the return trip- though I do have the meeting that is day after tomorrow on mind"
NAintara grabbed the phone and read the conversation aloud.
"This message was sent at 5:50pm , today by Dev".
She looked at the next bubble and said, "Message from Veerji at 5:51pm"
Okay!
"Then message from Veerji again at 5:53pm"
Don't worry about the meeting. The women of the family need a break. Let them enjoy if that's they are there for. I'll take care.
Naintara sighed, "See, kitne acche hain mere Veerji. Dev you never told me to take a break"
"Naintara just read the conversation and give the phone back and conclude what you women want to do", said Dev.
Naintara raised her eyebrow and looked back at the phone, "Message by Dev at 5:58pm"
You'll take care- Like always bro!
"Hmmm", said Naintara taking a deep breath. "Now what?"
"Ok then, we'll start back day after tomorrow. Is that okay Geet?", asked Daadiji.
"Daadiji, if you give me an option, I would never want to go back", said Geet, winking.
Daadiji smiled. "Ok we'll go back two days later. I cant stay more than that", she said.
"You cant stay here more than that or you cant stay away from Maan more than two days", asked Devanshi.
Daadiji smiled broadly. "The second observation always holds true Devanshi".
