I have a question to ask any writer who updates their FF (or a long SS) regularly.

How regular is regular? As in how much of a gap between each update has worked for you and your busy schedule?
I'm just trying to fit writing into my new, unexpected schedule which has changed and thought it would be a good idea to ask to see how other people may have fitted their writing in as I need to write regularly to keep the pace but am quickly running out of slots to fit it into my schedule.
Thanks in advance

According to me ,
My regularly updating I would say.
Keep a pace of 1 week of your updates .Like suppose if I update it today
So its Thursday 24th Sept time 4:30 pm or 5:00pm
To next Thursday 1st Oct time 4:30 or 5:00 pm
According to your convenience set your time for updating your FFs
So that you can make time for your other personal work too.
I hope my suggestion will make a good example for you

@ kittya_cullen

I agree about the search engine function. it could be improved upon. I specifically would like it to be able to search the names of members so that I can find all the threads in the FF forum by that member. Currently it does not do that so well and in some cases not at all.

@_.serendipity._

I also agree the layout is not the most useful, often I have to trawl through ten or more pages to find a story that might not be popular or based on a popular fandom and more often that not, that story is discontinued because there was not enough readers. But to be honest no writer can be expected to continue writing a story, putting effort into making unique characters, plots and working hard on their writing and grammar for little or no readers. So I completely understand if they stop writing even if it means I don't get to see how their story develops.

Also a little while ago I did a poll to find out what readers like reading in the FF forum and what makes them read a certain FF. The most votes went to the option regarding which fandom it is based upon. I'll attach the link again so if anyone missed voting, they can vote.

I am usually aiming for weekly updates but so far the most successful I have been is like once a month or even once in two months. But I like to think that posting multiple parts compensates.
That's the issue. How do you write, edit and then post weekly when you have such a busy schedule. I always failed at that.

Being a 12th grader I have busy schedule .
But I remove time like 3 hours a day for 3 works .
Writing, reading,editing .
It becomes a routine work by writing half a part each day and it comes to a weekend .then I update .
Editing I have reduced the no.of edits I make for my shop
From 12 I made it to 8 max so that I get time for my personal life too .
Reading doesn't take long .
Its just reserving it a day and then read a little each yime i am free then comment on each writers fiction .
Try that out dear

I see. I'm not sure if I'll be able to hit that target. Thank you for the advice. I'll try my best and see what happens.

From a personal perspective, I think weekly updates are what most FF writers aim for. However, there are many writers who can't simply do that and thus go for either updating every two weeks or once a month (which i think is fine).

However, from a writers perspective, not all writers are the same.

Some can write a whole chapter in one night, while others prefer to work over a chapter over a week.

Some can edit the chapter within a couple of hours whilst others are waiting for someone else to edit them,

Some writers have a free schedule while others are occupied with several things.

So when it comes down to it, it is completely up to the writer and what method they prefer.

Though from a readers perspective, they like enough gap so they can catch up on the story but not so infrequently where they forget what is happening in the story line.

I don't think I fit into any category since my circumstances always change.
that's why I asked the question, how long is infrequent? How regularly should a story be updated. I guess weekly is the best as you both have suggested, so I just got to buck up and fulfil that target else it will not get done.

For me, if there is a gap longer than a month or so then I would certainly forget the story line of a story.

It's hard to answer your question as not every reader is the same. You can't expect to receive the same response from every single one of your readers as there are some out there who will not be bothered waiting a month or so for an update, whereas some other readers might get tired of waiting so long and will not continue reading your story.

However, from my own personal experience, the faster you update it the more response you will receive from readers.

All in all, don't force yourself to write weekly updates just for the sake of your readers. You should want to write weekly updates because you want to continue weaving the story you are writing and you are excited.

You're right, every reader is different. I am really grateful mine have waited so long each time I update. I don't want to make them wait any more. I don't know about response from new readers. I do want to update regularly though regardless. Just trying to work out how regular I can be.
