Part 3

Within minutes, paramedics were swarming inside their room...

Time passed in a haze as Arnav could do nothing but watch...

"Severe overdose...No oxygen can get to her lungs..."

"What's going on!?" Arnav managed to rasp out...

As the emergency team began to resusitate Khushi, one nurse came towards Arnav.

"Sir, sleeping pills work by stimulating the activity of a certain nerve transmitter...and as a result the insides of the nerve cell become more negatively charged inhibiting further ability..."

"What...WHAT ARE YOU SAYING!?"

"I'm saying that the nerve cells are no longer stimulating her breathing muscles. She is deprived of oxygen and her can't breathe... And if we can't get her to breathe soon..."

Arnav, in a state of panic and shock, fell back against the wall..."No...no, she's just...YOU...YOU HAVE TO DO SOMETHING!"

That very second, Arnav heard a terrifying roaring noise...

He saw the paramedics violently hitting their palms down hard on Khushi's chest, as a suction tube was thrust down her throat...

"What the hell!? Arnav screamed pushing off the wall...

He tried to get closer, but the team refused..."Stand back! We need to do this! There is no time to take her to hospital!"

He looked to the nurse for answers...

"They have to pump her stomach...they have to get the drugs out of her system to stop their effect..."

Gripping her shoulders, Arnav begged her for more information..."And then she'll be fine!? Tell me!"

The roaring sound came again and he slammed his eyes shut and groaned in agony...

"Sir, I can't say for sure..."

"YOU HAVE TO KNOW FOR SURE! THAT IS MY WIFE!!!"

One of the other men soon came over to face Arnav, "Stand back sir, she can't do anything more for your wife than what we are already doing...If it's hope you're looking for, be assured that you have called us promtly, and the pills only have effect when they are in her system...the sooner they are out, the sooner we can help her further..." the man turned to the nurse..."can you go and get the pill bottle from the bathroom please?"

The woman hurried away as Arnav stared on in despair...

"I have a pulse!" one man called out

Arnav clawed his way past everyone and fell beside Khushi...

He saw the jar full tablets that they had managed to suck out of her, as well as a lot of blood...

"Khushi! Khushi I'm here, can you hear me?"

"Sir! She is unconscious! Step aside!"

As the men pushed Arnav aside once more, he watched as they attached a respirator to her...

"Her overdose was severe Mr. Raizada. We have to take her to hospital and get her on a dialysis machine to clean her blood..."

They began carrying her out, and Arnav was at her side in an instant..."I'm coming..."

"We know Sir, but you can't interfere anymore...we will give you answer when we have them...Do we have the Pill Information?"

The nurse ran up to the paramedic in charge and handed him the bottle...

The rest of the family were entering the house as the emergency team burst out...

Their sounds of screams and fear barely reached Arnav, as his own terror was driving him to hysteria.

Anjali and Payal were bombarding him with questions but he brushed their interrogations gently aside..."please...PLEASE! I have to go with her! I will call you when I know more..."

Payal clasped Anjali's hand as Nani and Akash tried to usher them into the house...

NK was almost in tears seeing Khushi laying so lifeless, but he quickly took Araav's hand and took him inside...

Arnav hurried to stay beside Khushi, passing everyone as though they were invisible...

Arnav tripped slightly when he felt someone pull at his arm...

"NOT NOW!" he yelled snapping his head back...

Arnav was about to explode thinking that NK had come to confront him...

He came face to face with Sheetal...

"Arnav...what happened?"

Utter detestation began to bubble over inside his heart...

He violently ripped sheetal's hand away from his arm and growled through clenched teeth, "Get your hands off me! And get the HELL out of my life!"

And he disappeared

"Is she breathing?"

The nurse once again nodded as the ambulance sped down the streets...

"Please Mr. Raizada. You can't keep asking the same thing over and over, we will know more once we get to the hospital..."

Arnav could no more hold back his fear as he could rewrite the past..."I need to know! Tell me what will be done when we arrive?"

"Sir, she will be moved into intensive care, they doctors will start a drug detoxification to help rid her body of any lingering addiction of toxins, and then we wait. She IS breathing, but her muscles are laboured. She will be hooked up to fluids and then all we can do is wait..."

Just as Arnav was about to demand for more, the ambulance pulled into the emergency bay...

The team worked fast, and this only evoked more panic inside him...

The seriousness of what she had done was terrifying him...

With bloodshot and tearfilled eyes, Arnav watched through the glass screens that separated him from his wife...

He had forcefully been told to stay out and let the doctors do their job...

"God...Please...please don't take Khushi...Don't..." he repeated constantly...

Minutes past...

He stood staring for what felt like hours...

Finally, the doctors began to exit one by one, leaving the one nurse inside...

"Mr. Raizada..."

Arnav pulled at the doctor's scrubs..."What! Tell me! Please, I'm dying seeing her like this..."

The doctor stepped back and Arnav let his hands drop...

"Sir. Your wife, WOULD have died if she had have arrived even one minute later..."

Arnav's heart plumetted...

"She is stable. Her body is still in withdrawals from the drugs, but her blood is cleaning out quite fast...as long as she progresses like this, her 'body' should recover from this...She had taken a massive overdose, and..." the doctor looked up at the nurse..."and I think you should go in and sit with her..."

Arnav couldn't bring himself to speak...

He knew his voice would break if he tried...

He slowly walked into her room...

Dim lights, cold walls...

He took one look at her paled face and instantly fell to the chair beside her bed...

Holding her hand to his lips, he let his hot breath warm her hands...

"Sir...when I went into the bathroom to get the pills, I found something...The doctor thought it would be best if I told you this..."

Barely able to focus, he lifted his head to look at the nurse...

"Your wife almost succeeded in ending her life...and she will need to be evaluated by the hospital councellor before we can even consider letting her leave..."

Arnav's eyes dropped back to look at Khushi, and inbetween gasping sobs, he said..."I drove her to this..."

"Sir, I don't know the full story, but for someone to do this, it would mean that they were in a deep depression...when it comes to this, it usually means that they had come to the conclusion that they had no more hope...The person isn't in the right frame of mind...I'm sure she didn't WANT to do this, but when the heart is hurting, the mind starts to lose focus...don't blame yourself, you are here for her..."

As Arnav wept into Khushi's hand, the nurse placed the crumpled letter before him, and left the room...

"I hate myself Khushi! I hate Arnav Singh Raizada!!!" he yelled into her palm...

His mind cursed himself..."You and your stupid ex girlfriend! You and your stupid attention to her! I hate her! I HATE HER!!!"

He began to groan in pain, as his own heart hurt severely...

"No...No..." he realized that this was the hopelessness she had been feeling..."I made the one most positive, hopeful, joyful person...try to take her own..."

He wanted to scream.

He wanted to rip open his chest and roar with rage.

Lifting his eyes back to Khushi's face, he gently smoothed her hair across her brow..."Khushi...I am here for you...I know I haven't been, but that is going to change... I am completely and utterly in love with you. And as God is my witness— no matter how long it takes— someday I will be worthy enough to be your husband, because I can't bear the thought of living without you..."

As his hand moved back, he saw the letter...
