Arnav slowly opened the door and entered and immediately felt as if everything around himmhad come alive. The curtains seemed a little brighter, the colors seemed more vibrant. And Khushi? It seemed to him as if she was radiating life. Just to see her sitting up like that, laughing, talking and smiling at everybody... It made his heart melt. The very sight of her lovely face soothed him like cool breeze on a hot summer day. He couldn't take his eyes of her face. Everything ceased to exist apart from her eyes, which were sparkling with life again, her little nose, which would turn red whenever she was excited or embarassed and her lips, which felt like velvet whenever they touched him. Slowly, very slowly, he began walking towards her, drinking in the sight of her while his ears bathed in the melodious kinkle of her laughter.
Suddenly she looked up. Her eyes met his. His heart stuttered, skipped a beat and then took off at an alarmingly thunderous speed. The chatter around them died down as they both kept staring at each other. He came to a stop beside her and reached for her hand uncertainly, like he was afraid he was dreaming and that if he touched her, he would wake up. Gathering up all the courage he had left in him, he hugged her.
Arnav crushed her to him, holding her with all his strength as silent tears of relief and happiness flowed down his face. He forgot everything that he had planned to tell her when she would wake up. He didn't need to say anything. He knew she would understand. She always understood. But something was not right this time. Arnav stilled. Khushi wasn't hugging him back. He pulled back to look at her.
Khushi looked confused. Her brows were furrowed together, as if in deep thought and her eyes looked at him strangely. Before he could ask what the matter was, buaji spoke up.
"I really don't know how I am going to thank him, Khushi" she said. Khushi looked away from him. If all, her expression became even more confused. "I shudder to think what would have happened if he weren't here. You are so lucky, Sanka Devi, to have someone like him in your life".
"Yes, Khushiji" Dr. Verma said, who had come to ensure that the patient wasn't under any kind of stress. "You are one lucky woman. What happened today, here, was a miracle. You had stopped responding to the medicines completely. It was his words that brought you back. He spoke to you for hours before his voice finally reached you, and you responded".
Arnav kept looking at Khushi. Something was definitely wrong. She hadn't said a word since he came in, but she looked lost. As if she was trying to figure something out. He wasn't liking this. He needed to talk to her.
"Doctor?" Khushi finally spoke up. Everyone turned to look at her.
"Yes?" Dr. Verma said.
"Could I please talk to my sister alone, for a few minutes?" she asked. Arnav was even more baffled. What was happening? Why did Khushi want to talk to Payal? Was she so mad at him that she wouldn't even look at him once? Even after knowing the fact that he was the one who had pulled her out of danger, she hadn't even acknowledged him. His temper began to rise but he fought to control it. Now was not the time.
"Sure" said Anjali. "Come, lets go outside" she told the others. They left one by one, either hugging or patting Khushi before they did so. But the more Arnav observed her, the more restless he got. He noticed that the smiles she gave them were controlled... Almost fake. Like her heart wasn't in it. Her eyes turned to him as the room emptied.
"I said alone" she said pointedly. Arnav was shocked. Khushi wanted HIM to leave? He almost lost his cool then and there.
Dr. Verma noticed Arnav's fuming stance and hurried to his side.
"Maybe you should leave, Mr. Raizada. I don't want her to undergo any kind of stress right now. Give her some time alone. You can talk to her later". He turned to khushi. "Khushiji? I hope you don't mind me staying here? I am the doctor. You may ignore me completely" he told her. Khushi nodded.
Arnav clenched his fists and threw a furious glance at Khushi. To his extreme annoyance, she still wasn't looking at him. He turned around and forced himself to move towards the door before he did something rash. But what he heard next, turned his world upside down in less than a second. His hand froze on the handle as he heard Khushi whisper softly to Payal-
"Jiji? Who are all these people? And who is that man who saved me?"
