Part 1: Like Father Like Kids
PAMPERING MY PRINCESS
Arnav knocked calling out to his daughter. The door was open but he preferred letting her call him in than barging into her room considering she was mad at him.
"Since when do you need to knock dad?" Asmara said. She was sitting on her bed holding onto her teddy with a frown on her face.
"Since my princess takes I'm-done-talking-to-you attitude" he replied playfully.
"No Papa' I haven't stopped talking to you. Have I ever?" she replied sighing; looking up to see her dad taking seat beside her. Arnav smiled. Asmara usually called him Dad' but sometimes' she called him Papa' when she's upset' or over cloud nine' or telling him that he was the best papa ever' and he loved hearing the word out of her mouth' it sounded more loving.
"So you are not mad at me, right?" he asked knowing that she was but making attempt at making her smile.
"I am." She said looking down at the teddy in her arms.
"You are?" he asked as if it was a shock to him.
"Dad, you asked Bhai to spy on me!" she said accusingly.
"No sweetie' why would I do that?" he asked lovingly.
"What was bhai talking about then?" she asked looking back at him.
"Hmmm' do you want to listen to a story?" he asked.
"Story? Don't you think your attempt at subject changing is very lame? Plus, I think you'll have to agree that I am a little too grown up for stories now" she replied with a smile tugging at her lips.
He chuckled. "Now are you? Your mom still insists on listening to stories in bed'"
Asmara smiled. Did her dad actually say that in front of her? She thought immediately jumping to the double meaning which Arnav had no intention of giving.
"And anyways I thought you'd love to hear a story about two kids named Ashar and Asmara'"
Asmara tried not to smile. "If you insist'" she said in a disinterested tone, but her dad caught the excitement in her eye. He wrapped his arms around her and took him in a half embrace.
"There once was a boy named Ashar Singh Raizada. He had a family which absolutely doted on him. He was the most pampered Kid in the history of man-kind, you know." He added playfully.
"Dad, no exaggerations allowed, ok?" she told him chuckling a bit.
"Only facts'" he said drawing a cross near his heart with his other hand.
"Dad'" she chuckled.
"OK' so one day he finds he's blessed with a little baby sister, whom his parents called Asmara."
"That's a nice name' "Asmara added.
"So it is. Now, his entire family started doting on her, even when it was only the first time they had laid eyes on her. They were all adoring her cute looks' and saying what a pretty baby she was and Ashar wasn't happy with the shift of attention. So to avoid any jealousy their father introduced his baby sister to him, and told him he always wanted to have a son first."
"And why would that be?" Asmara asked taking her cue.
"Their father told him he always wanted to have a son first so that he would beat anyone who dared mess with his daughter."
"Why would he say that? That's a horrible thing to do to his daughter." Asmara brooded.
"Maybe. He was hoping to perk him up and also to make him the loving, caring and protective brother that he is. And Asmara loves him the way he is. Doesn't she?"
"Yes." She replied and just then Ashar cleared his throat wearing his patent cheeky smirk standing coolly with folded hands, legs crossed; leaning on the door frame. Asmara frowned. He wasn't supposed to be here. She thought looking at her dad. Arnav shrugged as Khushi standing beside Ashar walked in smiling wide.
"I love you too sis" Ashar said walking in.
"But Asmara's brother wasn't supposed to take it that literally considering she wasn't even being messed with!" Asmara cried out to her dad. Her mom and brother weren't supposed to intrude on her moment with her dad.
"Yes, Asmara's brother wasn't supposed to take it that literally" Khushi said eying Ashar. It would be easy to take her daughter out of any unwanted situation but Ashar was a different story all together.
Ashar looked at Arnav.
"He was actually." Arnav said.
Ashar grinned satisfactorily. Khushi looked flabbergasted. And Asmara was so shocked that she was having hard time putting her thoughts in line.
