Chapter Thirteen: Bachao!

Maanvi stood impatiently waiting for Virat. Where are you, duffer? She thought. She tiptoed, trying to look ahead even though she knew it was futile.

Suddenly, she heard a piercing scream coming from behind. Without thinking, Maanvi ran towards the voice, wondering what had happened. She stopped in her tracks and saw a young boy stealing a woman's purse. The woman who must have been around her late 40's, wore a cream coloured suit and was trying her best to stop the boy from stealing her purse. The young thief had his head and face partly covered by a cloth, tugging onto the leather bag.

"Leave my bag!" The woman called out, with no response. "I said leave it! Is anyone there? Bachao!" She cried out as the boy started tugging harder.

Maanvi couldn't bare it any longer, if she hated cruelty, she also hated thieves. Within a second, she reached out and pulled the thief back. Hastily, turning him around, she slapped him quite hard. The boy, who was taken aback, let go of the purse and fell on the floor.

"What do you think you're doing?!" Maanvi shouted.

The boy looked up at her and let out a measly sound, "Maanvi di?" He said softly.

Maanvi fretted. She helped the boy up and took the cloth of his face. In pure shock, she spoke, "Akash?" The boy saddened, Maanvi did not expect the boy who she had helped a few days back to be doing this sort of thing.

"You? You're stealing?" She spat out.

"I'm sorry Maanvi di. I'm really sorry." He let out a cry.

"But why? After last time, seriously?"

"I needed money, my mother is really ill. And I had nowhere to get money from. I mean, I get money from that dhaba from last time, I work there now but I needed 300 rupees more. I didn't know what to do." He sniffed.

Maanvi comforted him. "But stealing isn't the way forward, you do know that right? You didn't do well to aunty." She nodded towards the woman who stood with a heavy heart.

Akash faced towards the woman, "I'm sorry aunty. I didn't mean to. I'm really sorry."

The woman smiled, she was obviously someone with a big heart and soul. "Don't worry beta, I understand." She opened her purse and took out some money. "Here is about 1000 rupees, pay off your mother's bill and save the rest okay?" Akash took the money, thanking her kindness. Maanvi smiled, what a nice woman, if that was anyone else she'd have taken Akash to prison, She thought.

After Akash left smiling, the woman faced Maanvi. "Thank you dear for helping me. If you weren't there, then maybe he'd have taken my purse. It's not about the money rather than my inhaler, if he'd taken that then God knows what would have happened."

Maanvi smiled, "Don't worry aunty. I didn't do much, everything happened because of circumstances."

"Still beta, thank you." The woman spoke softly and caressed Maanvi's cheek.

Just then, Virat called out. "Maanvi? Maanvi where are you?"

Maanvi closed her eyes and groaned, "Oh no. I forgot that Virat was there." She turned to the woman, "Okay aunty. I have to go okay?" Without a response, she ran out to a concerned Virat.

"Virat!" Maanvi called out.

He took a deep breath and ran towards her, "Are you okay Maanvi? I'm so sorry I should have never left you here alone. I'm such a fool. Anything could have happened." He said without stopping.

"Virat! Take a deep breath!" She ordered him which he obeyed. "Okay, don't worry. Nothing happened to me, actually this Aunty was going to get robbed and I helped her."

Virat looked at her in shock. "You helped her? From thief?" he questioned. He was bewildered, he thought Maanvi was a typical knight-in-shining-armour expecting princess. Maanvi nodded. Virat laughed, resulting in a frown from Maanvi. "Wow, I didn't know you were such a sherni! Trust me, even I'm scared to be around you now." He teased.

Maanvi feigned a gasp. "Don't be silly Viraaat." She called out. She stopped and thought, "Wait, where you actually worried for me?" She teased back, grinning.

Virat quickly shook his head, "er, no way. Why should I be worried about you? I was just scared that bhai and everyone would punish me for losing you. That's all." He coughed but Maanvi was not convinced, but for now she was letting it go.

"By the way," she spoke, "where did you go? Was it such an important phone call that you couldn't say it in front of me?"

Virat sighed, "Maya called."

"What?! What? Your ex right?"

Virat nodded. "She wanted me back."

"You didn't agree right? Virat, she sounds like a complete cow." Virat gave her a look, Maanvi apologised.

"No Maanvi, I didn't. We're over, what she did was wrong, and we'll never get back together." He smiled at Maanvi.

"Good. I don't like her." Virat laughed. "What's so funny?" Maanvi said.

"You."

"what?"

"Are you always this blatant?" He teased.

"Yes, so? Problem?" She pointed a finger at him.

"Nope, I like it." He said.

"You're not that bad you know."

"You're not bad too."

Virat held his hand out, "friends?" He gestured.

Maanvi shook his hand and friend, "friends."
