After you," he said smiling at me pointing to the doorway. I said a silent thank you to Dr. Kapoor and walked towards the doorway. His smile was beaming. What the hell? Why was he so happy? A few minutes ago he looked like he was about to burst out into tears and now he looks like someone just said he won the lottery. I walked out of the room and I saw he was following me. I better fake a phone call until Chotte comes. As I was about to take my phone from my purse he walked up towards me.
"It was nice having a session with you. And thank you for listening to my story, it means a lot," he said thoughtfully.
"It's my pleasure. I'm so sorry for your loss," I replied sympathetically.
"Thank you. Um.. would you like to have some coffee with me? I hear they have a nice coffee shop near here..we could walk-" he asked.
"My bhai is actually coming to pick me up so... maybe another time," I said nicely.
"That's fine. Maybe another time," he said disappointed. Maybe another time
"So, how was your first therapy session?"Chotte asked.
"It was fine. The therapist is nice and my partner is nice as well," I said staring at the window avoiding eye contact. I knew what he would ask next.
"Oh. What's your partner's name?" Chotte asked curiously.
"Sameer. He's very nice," I said quickly.
"Sameer? So he's a guy... interesting," Chotte said annoyed. Here comes the blow. "Maybe we could get you a partner that's a girl. Make it easier for you," he said hinting at it.
"That won't be necessary. Sameer is a very nice man and he has no bad intentions," I said flatly.
"I just don't want to see you get hurt again Di," Chotte said.
"Why would I get hurt? You're acting as though I just said I loved this man," I said knowing I had taken it too far.
"I'm not saying that. I just don't want this man to say something without thinking and hurt you. And when did I ever hint at a relationship between you two. You are NOT ready for a relationship," Chotte said sternly.
"Maybe I am. You don't know my feelings. Maybe I'm over Shyam already. Maybe I'm ready to get married again. Who knows? You can't take control of that," I argued.
"Damn right I can. Di, I know what's best for you," Arnav said.
"Oh really? Is that why you kept Shyam a secret for so long?" I retorted. I regretted those words as soon as they left my mouth. The words left a lingering bitter feeling.
"Chotte, I didn't-" I tried to explain but he stopped me.
"You're right. I don't know what's right for you," he whispered.
"It's not that it's just... let me be independent. I don't want to be your carry-on luggage wherever you go," I said touching him lightly on the shoulder. I could hear him gulp loudly.
"I understand. So you want to be more independent? That's fine by me," he said quietly.
"But that doesn't mean I don't need my bhai," I said smiling softly.
"You'll always need your bhai Di. And I'll always need my Di. Forever and ever," he said stopping at the stoplight. He intertwined his fingers into mine. Just perfect.
A week flew by faster than I thought it would. There it was, the looming therapy session. Chotte said he would drop and pick me up from every therapy session. Well I guess that means no coffee with Sameer. As I walked into the building I felt a tingly sensation. Why? Why should I? He's just a regular guy. No one else.
"Sure," he said over the phone.
"Really?" I asked astonished.
"Yes, you can go out for coffee. I was going to ask Akash to pick you up anyways. I have an important meeting to attend so this works out perfectly," he said distracted.
"I'll be back before dinner," I said.
"You better be. Or else this Sameer kid isn't going to last another day," Chotte said regaining his old self.
"Kid? He's older than you," I said giggling.
"Whatever. Still, consider himself warned," Chotte said.
"OK baba, I'll hang up now," I said clicking the end button. I saw Sameer leaning against his car door. He had loose fit jeans on and a black jacket on. I couldn't help but stare.
