Chapter 9
Silence
We are enclosed in a shell,
Created by the hunter,
Yet the pray falls for
The ever willing predator
PRESENT:
"We are going home." He growled out at her in his poor attempt at controlling his frustration and anger.
"Fine." Geet said in a disdainful voice.
Ever the consummate socialite, Geet made her excuses with the host and hostess. But even that wasn't easy.
"You two are such a lovely couple!" Mr Chopra exclaimed. "I am sure everyone here was mesmerised by that kiss."
"Of course." Sneha Chopra chimed in, while dragging along a silent Rehan. "Both of you are such divine dancers."
"Well it is always a treat to dance with my lovely wife." Maan's words seemed to be innocuous but Geet knew the hidden intent; making it obvious that she was only so good with him.
Geet felt apprehensive, being stuck between Maan and Rehan. She knew that Maan could blow up any moment and this was supported by the way his fingers curled around hers.
"Isn't that right Rehan?" Mrs Chopra continued.
"Yes''they look lovely." He spat out the words. It took every inch of Rehan's control to not say something rude but somehow he managed.
Geet cut in with a small laugh, not wanting to put Rehan in an awkward position. "Thanks for the lovely compliments but we really should head off now."
"Yes, we should." Maan's voice was devoid of any emotions, contradicting the volatile mood he was in. "After all it's been such an'.eventful night."
--------------------------------
PAST:
"How many shares have you bought?" Maan asked while looking out into the view of his office. As usual Maan couldn't allow even the smallest setbacks in his plans and this plan was far too important for him to fail. Getting the appropriate response, Maan smirked but he only said. "Good, make sure you continue on."
Step by step'.one day at a time. But soon there will be no distance between us, Maan thought to himself but was interrupted by a knock on the door.
"Come in."
And in she walked. As always she looked amazing, both elegant and beautiful.
"Hi Maan." Geet's voice seemed determined as well as hesitant. "I hope I didn't come at an inopportune moment."
"Of course it is a fine time. What do I owe the pleasure of this visit?" Maan asked smoothly, while internally he was delighted at having her come to him.
"I want to thank you for sending this lovely present," Geet explained while taking out the jewellery box from her bag, "but I can't accept this. It is far too expensive, so please don't take this the wrong way but here it is."
Maan clenched his hands in anger but inside he had expected a reaction like this. "IT was a present to a friend, so I won't take it back."
"And do you think it's appropriate present to give to a friend?" She asked with a slight edge in her voice. She wanted to make sure that he didn't have any doubts about their relationship.
"Ms Handa a necklace like this is nothing for me and is something that I wouldn't hesitate to give to a friend." Maan let a bit of coldness seep through to the words, knowing how to handle her.
And Geet did feel guilty by his reaction. "I am sorry, I really didn't mean to imply anything. Please don't take my words the wrong way."
"Fine but only if you keep the present." Internally Maan was smirking, knowing that she would accept it now.
"Alright." Geet acquiesced with a smile, even while she was shaking her head at his tenacity.
---------------------------------
"Happy Birthday!" Rehan whispered as he hugged her. They were in the middle of the party room in Calder Hotel.
Geet Handa's birthday party was an important event, bringing forth all the important people in the town. But still Geet stood out like a shining beacon among false jewels. At least it was like that for Rehan.
As Rehan held Geet he knew that there were many men in the room who would have loved to be in his spot, next to Geet. Some here would say that he was inadequate for her and that she deserved someone more worthy. There were times when he would think like that as well but then he would realise that nothing mattered because Geet would never look at any other man the way she would look at him. She could sooth away any anxieties and insecurities because when it was just the two of them there was only equality between two people who were in love.
"I loved the present." Geet smiled at him, while fingering the small amethyst pendant that he had gotten her. It wasn't much but she made it look beautiful. But the most important part was that she had worn his inexpensive present instead of something far more expensive. "It is beautiful."
And Geet did genuinely mean what she said. Anything that Rehan gave was special to her, even if it was only a small locket. He had bought her this knowing that her favourite colour was purple and that she would be wearing purple dress.
Suddenly Geet stiffened in surprise as she could someone's eyes on her. She looked around but couldn't see anyone looking particularly at her, everyone was just enjoying the party. It was silly but somehow she was sure that someone had been staring right at her.
"Geet are you okay?" Rehan asked as he saw her frown.
"I am fine." She reassured him but it was difficult to reassure her own anxiety.
----------------------------------
(GEET's DRESS)
Maan couldn't take his eye off her as he stood in the dark corner of the room. She looked like a dream in her lilac coloured chiffon dress. It brought out the soft creamy colour of her skin as well as clinging to her curves. The lace around the neckline enticed him to touch the soft skin there and the glimpses of her legs were maddening.
It angered him to see her with another man and he wanted that look on her face for himself. She cannot love anyone else, his heart whispered, she is meant to be mine.
With determined steps he strolled towards the pair, wanting to catch a moment with her whether or not the other man was there.
He watched her from behind as he walked to her and saw the way her body stiffened slightly as if aware of his attention. It caused a small sense of satisfaction in him, to feel that she was aware of him as he was of her.
"Hi."
She turned around slowly to face him. "Hi Maan glad you could make it." As usual her voice was controlled and calm, not giving anything away. "This is Rehan, my boyfriend."
Rehan looked at the man in front of him and immediately knew that he was not someone to cross. There was an aura of immense power radiating from him that plainly told people that Maan Singh Khurana doesn't suffer fools lightly.
"It's nice meeting you." The two men shook hands, each assessing the other.
And this is my competition, Maan thought with disdain.
"You look lovely." Maan complimented Geet. He looked at her pendant and with a small smirk said, "Nice necklace."
There seemed to a hidden message between the words which Rehan was oblivious to.
But Rehan could read Geet like a book and for the first time he noticed something different in Geet. There was a certain look in her eyes, a mixture of excitement and interest. There was also a certain edge in her posture, as if she was jittery.
And for the first time Rehan was scared.
-----------------------------------------
Present
In silence they had driven home and in silence they were in their room. But even in the silence there were words that didn't need to be said to be understood. She could read the frustration in his eyes and in his movements.
There were moments when Geet wanted to break this silence but it was something that she had created herself. There were so many questions she wanted to ask him but words wouldn't come out.
Staring into the darkness of their room, Geet heart wished for a different relationship between them. But he had made it near impossible.
In a relationship where a partner cannot trust the other, how will it work? He may have faith in me, knowing that I'll never betray him but where will I get my faith when he has already destroyed it?
As always she could feel his eyes on her she wiped her makeup in front of the mirror. His eyes would follow her every move, causing her heart to race but she kept her face blank, not letting him get even a glimpse of her emotions.
He stood behind her, brushing away her hands that were trying to take off her jewellery, instead doing the job himself. Geet clenched her hands, not wanting to give him any leeway but neither did she stop him, for that would show her weakness. But Maan was ruthless as he let his fingers graze over her skin, causing the small hairs to rise.
"Are we going to talk about tonight's party?" He whispered to her. "Or are you going to avoid the discussion?"
Geet's answer was in her silence and her look. She looked at him, giving him only the smallest glimpse of the anger and frustration she felt, before she turned away and walked to her bed.
"So that is how it's going to be?" His voice had hardened from her refusal to talk but still he walked towards her.
She could feel him lying next to her, only a few inches away from her. Like every other night even this minute distance felt like miles. There had been a short period of time when nothing could have come between them but now even with no obstacles she couldn't let herself lose to him.
His arms came around her, holding her right against him, and his breath was on her face. She closed her eyes, giving herself a minute to enjoy this feeling before she could close her heart off to him. She knew the wiser decision would have been to pull away from him but while she couldn't close the distance, she couldn't run away from him.
No matter how much she hated him, she couldn't avoid the fact that she loved him in a way that almost killed her. And that was the very reason she hated him so much. She could have forgiven him for anything but breaking her faith after making her fall for him.
The truth though was that the person she hated most was herself for loving him.
"Good night love." He whispered to her but as always she didn't reply to his endearment.
