Hi Everyone!

Thank you so very much for your comments! 🤗 I really appreciate it. Keep them coming and you're welcome to criticize it as well. Here's the next chapter of A Blue Moon Ago. Enjoy!

Chapter 8

'What are you talking about? Arjun didn't tell me anything about this. I'm sure if anything like that would have happened, he would have told me. He wouldn't have hid this. All these years he didn't talk about Maan. I thought that was because he didn't want to hurt me. But the fact was that they weren't talking? How is this possible? They were best friends. Did it happen because of me? I shouldn't have told Arjun anything! Because of me their relationship is spoiled!' said Geet with tears in her eyes.

Annie tried consoling her best friend, 'Geet, please do not be upset. Maybe this is why Arjun didn't tell you because you'd be upset. Geet, we were best friends too right and see what happened to us. Don't worry; such things do happen all the time. Please don't blame yourself. It wasn't because of you. I'm sure it was a mutual decision.' Annie sighed. Maybe it was a bad idea after all to come see her best friend. She was so upset and she didn't know what to do.

Geet finally stopped crying and hugged her friend. 'Annie, maybe you should get going now, it's pretty late and I don't want anything to happen to you. Drive back safely alright?'

'Geet! I can't believe you're trying to get rid of me already! Just joking, honey. Yeah, we'll talk tomorrow OK?' They hugged one another and Annie left wondering how she would tell Maan about her and Arjun. She was planning to do so tonight because she knew Maan was still awake and she wanted to get over it as soon as possible.

She drove back and saw Maan seated on the chair staring into space. This was going to be harder than she had imagined. She cleared her throat and Maan looked at her.

'Maan, I wanted to talk to you about something,' she stopped and took a deep breath. 'I'm going to get married to Arjun as soon as possible.'

Maan looked at her with such fury in his eyes that she unconsciously took a step back. 'You will do nothing of that sort Annie. You're talking to Arjun? YOU'RE ACTUALLY TALKING TO ARJUN? YOU WANT TO GET MARRIED TO THAT *******?'

Annie got furious at him. 'How dare you call him that? How dare you? YOU WERE BEST FRIENDS ONCE! WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU GUYS? WHY DID YOU PUSH HIM AWAY? WHY DID YOU BOTH FIGHT?' asked Annie her voice raising with every sentence.

'Don't you talk to me like that young lady! I'm your older brother! What happened between him and me is none of your business! All I know is that you stay out of his way! Don't you dare talk to him again OK!' he said this with his voice so quiet that it took a person who knew him to realize how dangerously Maan was close to the brink of breaking all hell lose on Earth.

'If it's none of my business, why should I even stay away from him? We had stopped talking after you guys fought. I met him a few years later and he was still courteous to me. I would have thought that he would have wanted to kill me but no, he was the most polite person I had met. We became friends again and then we fell in love. No matter what you say, I intend to get married to him!'

'Didn't you hear what I said? You will not get even close to him, forget about marriage! I will not have you ruining your life! Do you get that? I will not have you ruining your life!' he shouted.

'It's my damn life OK! If I want to ruin it, I will do so! Do not interrupt. Oh, don't give me that hurt look. It doesn't suit you at all! Do you know how many lives you have ruined? You have no idea bro! No idea whatsoever. And you know what? I'm not even going to tell you about it! You have made so many people suffer! I don't even want to start counting the number now.' Annie said quietly thinking about Geet, Kunal and Arjun. Maan was a moron. The biggest moron she had seen.

'Don't talk about things you do not know about OK! I have not ruined anybody's lives. If I did whatever I did was payback! JUST PAYBACK! You will not get that! And for the last time I'm telling you, you will not get married to that *******!'

Annie said quietly, 'If I don't marry him, I will not marry anyone else.' With that she walked to her room.

Maan swore eloquently under his breath. He smashed his fist on the glass table which broke and had pieces of glass in his hand. It was bleeding profusely. Annie turned and saw what had happened. She screamed and ran down the stairs. She made her brother sit down. She ran towards the bathroom and got the first aid kit. She quickly removed the pieces of glass from his hand and flinched when she saw how deep the wounds were. She quickly bandaged his hand and looked into his eyes. Her eyes were misty as were his.

'Annie, I really do care about you. I just don't want my little sister to be hurt. I really love you and I want you to know that. If he ruins your life, I'll ruin him.' Maan looked at his sister and realized how much she had grown up. She had chosen a man and it was his duty to accept it whether he liked him or not. He wouldn't let his sister down. No, he wouldn't do that. 'If you want to get married to him, that's fine. Just let him know that one tear from your eye and I'll break his neck OK sweety?'

Annie started to cry in earnest now. 'Oh Bhaiya, I love you! I love you and I love you! Thank you so much! He really loves me you know and I love him too! He's the sweetest person I have met and he can do anything for me! He will never hurt me. In fact, he won't even think about it!' She hugged her big brother and smiled through her tears. Maan hugged her back with a fierce brotherly protectiveness.

They talked for a while and called her mother. Savitri Khanna cried over the phone because she was so happy for her daughter. At least one problem was solved. She wondered if Maan would ever finally find a daughter-in-law for her. She had tried in the past to hook him up with several women but he refused and she eventually had to give up. She didn't want to think about it now and wanted to be totally happy for her daughter.

Annie ran up the stairs full of excitement. Her brother had agreed! Hurray!

Maan collapsed in his chair and closed his eyes. He replayed the scene that did not leave him for over a decade.

*********** Flashback***********

Maan came out of the classroom and saw Geet in Arjun's arms her eyes brimming with love. Arjun then twirled her around and she laughed like she was the happiest person on Earth at that moment. Maan formed his hand in a fist and a muscle twitched in his jaw. Naintara came and stood beside Maan and watched the scene.

'I had told you about this Maan. Only you didn't believe me. Now you have solid proof in front of your eyes. What you choose to do with it is entirely up to you. I don't think you should let go of this now. Maan, if it's payback you want for this, it's payback you'll get.' She was smiling wickedly only Maan did not seem to realize that. All he was thinking about was how Geet was laughing with Arjun. All he could see was Arjun's arms around Geet's waist. That *** ** * *****! He had been his best friend and he backstabbed him! His own girlfriend, his own love had cheated on him wit his best friend! He made a decision.

'You're right Naintara. It's payback I want. I have a plan.'

He had held Naintara close to him, his face turned away from the door. Any moment Geet would come in the room and find him in the compromising situation with Naintara. He wanted to see the look she would give him for that. He wanted to see the hurt that would appear in her eyes. He wanted her to hurt so bad that it hurt him.

After that scene, he had gone out of his way to complete all his assignments, attend all lectures and take part in as many activities as he could. Geet had left the next day and he never saw her again. He was mad about that because he wanted to torment her. He wanted to make her life so miserable she would beg him to stop. Only that he never got that opportunity. Arjun came to him the next day.

They quarreled. Arjun had asked him how he could have cheated on Geet. Maan had replied with a fist on Arjun's face. They then had a full blown fight which was stopped by a few students in school. The best friends then became pure enemies. It was worse, they acted like strangers.

***********End of Flashback***********

Hi Everyone!

Sorry I'm updating so late! I just got bit by the laziness bug. 😳 The symptoms were severe 😲 but now I am coming back to normal. 😆Here's the next part! Enjoy!

Chapter 9

Maan woke up thinking. He had fallen asleep in the chair. He trusted Annie more than anyone else in the world. She trusted Arjun and she thought he was always right. Did that mean Geet and Arjun were right? No, Arjun was just fooling around with Annie's mind. 'Annie is not a kid,' he thought. 'She knows things better; sometimes even better than me. I should trust her judgment.' When he thought again, he was not entirely sure. She was still his kid sister and he could not see anyone playing around with her emotions.

He rose from the uncomfortable chair with a stiff neck. Whatever happened, he would accept their relationship. He would not let his sister down. It must have taken her a great deal of courage to say that to him. He smiled softly. His sister was brave. She was willing to face the wrath of her brother for her love. She was very much in love.

He walked to the room and entered the shower. Water drops fell on his tanned skin as diamonds fell from heaven. He stood there thinking about Geet. Had she really betrayed him or had he just not given her a chance? He should have confronted her instead of staging the drama. He sighed. His pride then was more important to him than any truth.

Geet and Arjun had always been good friends. They almost had sibling affection. Why did he start seeing them otherwise? What made him suspect? He had no idea but he suddenly wasn't so sure about what had happened ten years ago. He thought he was incredibly dumb. He should have talked to her instead of suspecting her. She was so much in love with him. Not anymore. He had ruthlessly broken her heart.

She must have been married by now. Oh God, please don't let that have happened. He couldn't bear the thought of her loving some other man. But who would wait for him? And why would she? 'Maan, snap out of these thoughts OK. She cheated on you,' he thought with uncertainty. The only way he was ever going to find out was by confronting her. She was in Nainital; he had seen her. He would ask Annie tonight. She would know. Yes, she would definitely know about her whereabouts. If she was talking to Arjun, she would be talking to Annie too. With that he relaxed somewhat and thought of his friend Naintara.

Naintara on the other hand was very nervous and sad. She was a tall woman with black eyes and equally dark hair. She had loved him, damn it! He didn't look at her twice. She paced with all these thoughts running in her mind. She only did what she did so that he would look at her twice. Even with Geet out of the way, he didn't look at her. Geet was etched on his mind, body and soul. As far as she knew, and she knew quite a lot about Maan, he had not touched any other woman since Geet.

Even a few months ago, she had been optimistic that with just a bit more time, he would come to her. Now, she regretted what she had done. She had separated two people who had loved each other very much. Maan considered her as his friend. If only he knew. She wanted to tell him what she had done but she was afraid. She was afraid of losing him. 'But he never was mine,' she thought. She would rectify her mistake. And that idiot hadn't called her yet. She didn't know what part of the world he was in now. She called Savitri Aunty.

'Hello, Aunty. How are you? Do you know where Maan is?' she asked.

Savitri spoke with a smile. 'Seems like this time he didn't tell you where he went. He's in Nainital. I wanted to go there so he went and hired a cottage. I'm leaving in a few hours.' She really liked Naintara. She was wary about her in the beginning but had realized that this girl loved her son very much. She never thought about fixing them up because she knew Maan was somebody else's. She had still waited. She had waited for a decade now. Savitri knew she would wait for her whole life if she had to. But she noticed a change in her from a few months, she was filled with regret. Savitri didn't understand why but she knew that Naintara was genuinely regretful. She thought it had to do with Maan's condition but didn't quite reach it.

On the other side Naintara's breathing was very uneven. He was in Nainital; so was she. This was the right time to tell them both the truth. She would do it even if it killed her. She would do it. She wouldn't be responsible for their separation anymore. Oh God, it hurt. But she had caused much more hurt to many more lives than she realized. 'I deserve it,' she thought. She couldn't sleep at night anymore, her regret was that deep.

They chitchatted for a while and hung up. Savitri finally went to the prayer room and sat down with hands joined. She looked at the deities of all the Gods. She whispered, 'Oh Lord, please give Maan a new life. You know how he's been for a decade now. I can't see him like this anymore. Please do something. I'm depending on You. If there is anybody or anything, there's only You.'

What Savitri didn't know was that somewhere far away, her blood was wishing something similar. For his mother. Kunal stood in the temple with his hands joined to Lord Krishna. There was eye contact between Kunal and the Lord. He moved forward. 'Oh Lord Krishna. Please give my mother happiness. All you've seen is her sadness. Please do something about it. You need to do something about it. You know I've been a good boy. I have never asked Mom about my dad. I have never even asked you. Don't you owe me something? I know Mom still loves dad; I can feel it. She needs him back in her life. I don't know what's going on but I know she loves him. Please let him love her too. Please bring them together. I never even asked you for my tenth birthday gift, I'm asking now, please bring my dad home. Not only for her, for me too.' He looked at the Lord and bowed down. He trusted Lord Krishna. Miracles would happen now. He smiled, everything would be alright now. There would be nobody and nothing to stop this now.

The four friends couldn't stop thinking about their beloved friend either. She looked distracted as she often did. That didn't mean that she neglected any duties or performed bad in any surgery. She had this crease on her brow that clearly told her friends that she was deep in thought. They had never questioned her. They would never need to because she was very expressive. Her expressions told them everything they needed to know. She still missed Kunal's father. She would tell them when she was ready but there was no denying. They quickly prayed that some miracle would happen and there would be happiness in their friend's life.

Geet was really distracted today. All she could think about was Maan. Annie had told her that he had accepted the relationship. They would come for dinner tonight. Of course not Maan. How she wished he would come there too. 'Oh well, he's in Mumbai. Why would he ever come here?' she thought.

She went home in the evening and got a quick delicious dinner ready. Kunal was jumping up and down all excited because he really had missed Arjun and couldn't wait for him to come here. They all had a wonderful dinner filled with laughter and Geet was really happy for her friend. Finally, she thought. 'In university, I always thought that they looked perfect together. It took them a decade to realize that. Why am I feeling so hollow though? I am very happy for them. I will not think about her brother.' Geet was then called in the hospital for an emergency and took their leave.

Annie went home with Arjun all excited. She saw Maan and tensed a little bit. She reminded herself that everything would be fine between Arjun and her brother now. There was no reason to panic. They entered the house and Arjun and Maan saw each other. They forgot all the animosity that existed between them and just went into each others arms. Annie sighed. 'This is just like what happened with me and Geet. They still love each other so much. I wonder why such things happen.' She thought.

They talked for a long time and Arjun left. Maan turned to Annie and saw her happy face. She looked so happy. He wouldn't have been able to forgive himself if he would have broken their relationship. He was happy for his little sister. Now was the time to ask his sister about Geet.

He cleared his throat. 'Annie, I wanted to ask you something. Do you know where Geet stays here?'

He looked at his sister's panicked face and heard his phone ring. Cursing under his breath, he picked it up. After a few seconds, he managed to bite out a what! Annie looked at him and saw that color had led his face and he was listening attentively.

'Annie. Hurry up. We need to go to Sanjivani Hospital. Mom just had an accident!'

Chapter 10

'Geet, if there is one more surgery, I'm probably going to pass out,' Nandini said heading towards the cafeteria. Both the doctors were called back because of an emergency that had risen. The case was solved and the patient's health was under control but the two women were exhausted. Two hours of intense surgery drained their energy so they were going to go grab some food.

'I know. I thought we were done for today and I was planning to have an early night but apparently not. Sometimes I feel I need to get out of here but when we save someone's life, it just feels remarkable and I want to do it all over again.' They spotted seats near the television and got fruits to eat.

'We have just spotted Maan Singh Khurana in Nainital. It seems like he is having a good time there. Look at this picture of the area in which he is currently residing in. Nainital is a beautiful mountainous area where thousands of tourists go. It seems like the businessman's heart has been stolen by this beauty.' The Zoom news reporter went on and on. Geet had frozen in her chair with shock. Maan was here. He was in Nainital. Oh God, this can't be happening, she thought.

The two women were deep in thought and were finishing their light meal when their beeper went off. Nandini groaned, 'Not again. Oh well, we better head to the operation theatre and see what new case awaits us.' They rushed to the operation theatre and saw an old woman bleeding profusely. It looked like she was involved in an accident. Geet remained inside while Nandini went to the family members outside and explained them the situation.

Nandini spotted Maan and frowned. He was in the news right now. Was the woman in the operation theatre his mother? Now when she thought about it, she could spot resemblances. She told Maan and Annie the details and told them to sign the operation papers. As soon as that was done, Nandini headed back to the theatre.

Geet and Nandini worked very seriously in the OT. They could see that the patient's condition was critical and they needed to do something really quickly. They concentrated hard and gave orders to the nurses to give them some surgical instrument or the other. On the other hand, Maan and Annie were pacing outside the OT. They were really tensed and Annie had joined her hands as if in a prayer. They could not lose their mother. She meant everything to them. After two hours of intense waiting, they saw their mother being taken away. Another doctor they could not quite see was accompanying their mother. The other doctor, Nandini, went towards them and gave them the good news. Their mother was out of danger and would gain consciousness in the morning due to the effects of anesthesia and the accident itself.

'Thank you. Thank you so much for this! I don't know how I will ever repay you,' Maan said with tears in his eyes. He gave Nandini a rib-cracking hug and kissed her on the cheek. Nandini flushed; he was a charming man. If he decided, he would make any woman happy. She sighed, it would never be her. She was already losing her heart to Dev. Their act for Dr. Rathod had really made Nandini think about Dev in that way. She hoped he felt the same way.

She went to the room where Savitri Khanna was being kept. She saw Geet there fussing with the patient. Nandini smiled. She had not informed Geet that Savitri was Maan's mother. She did not want to upset her friend. Nandini had noticed that whenever Maan was shown on TV, her friend would tense. She did not know the reason for it but she didn't want to see her worked up.

They started chatting aimlessly. 'Nandini, you know what I'm going to do as soon as I'm out of here for tonight? I'm going straight to bed. Forget the shower and forget everything else. All I want right now is a nice, warm bed and blankets. I want to sleep!' Geet complained. It was not very often that the friends complained but when things got rough, they couldn't get enough of it.

'We just have to inform the nurses about what to do at what time and we can be on our way. Kunal must be sleeping right now?' Nandini enquired.

'Yes, he was dozing off when I was at home so must be sleeping right now. How I wish I was just ten at this moment!' With that, both friends laughed.

Nandini went outside and Geet followed her. She stopped dead in her tracks because she saw him. He looked as good as he always did. Even after all this time, just looking at him increased her heart rate. All her senses awakened and she just stood there mesmerized. She gave herself a mental shake. 'He must not see me,' she thought. Desire was on the surface as was pain. He had cheated on her and there was no forgetting that.

She quickly returned to the room Savitri Khanna was in. before she had entered, Annie had seen her and had barely stopped herself from calling out her name. They would not appreciate that. They would definitely not appreciate that.

She told her brother to enter after a few minutes.

'But why Annie? I want to see her too!' he whined.

Annie looked at him very confused. What was she supposed to tell him? Don't go yet because Geet's in there? She thought of a reason quickly and went to the room. She entered and saw her mother lying down on the bed. She looked really pale. Her mother was usually lively and bright. This form of her mother brought tears to her eyes.

She kissed Savitri's cheek and held her mother's hand. Geet was hidden behind the green curtain and saw this scene. She understood that Savitri was Annie's mother. The scene touched her and tears formed in her eyes too. She went to Annie and put her hand on her shoulder. Annie turned, saw Geet, and started sobbing in Geet's shoulder. Geet was shaken. She had never seen her friend lose control like this before. She comforted her. After her sobbing subsided, Annie told Geet that Maan was outside. The expression on Geet's face confirmed that she knew. She told Geet that Maan was looking for her. Geet stood there dazed.

Why was he looking for her now? She'd ensure that they never had a confrontation. A new wave of fear clutched her heart. Did Maan find out about Kunal? Was that it? She then looked at Annie's face and knew that she would have told her if that was the reason.

'It's OK Annie, I'll make sure that we never meet. Please never tell him about me and Kunal? I know you won't but just telling you just in case.'

Annie nodded. 'Geet, if you don't want to meet him, you better get out of here quickly or hide right now.'

'How do I go without him noticing?' she asked.

'Don't worry, I'll provide a distraction.' With that, Annie went to her brother and asked him to bring coffee for her. Maan went to the cafeteria. Geet thanked her silently and quickly went towards her cabin where Nandini was waiting for her.

'Where did you get lost Geet? One moment you were behind me and the next moment you disappeared.' Nandini sounded extremely puzzled. For some incomprehensible reason, Maan reminded her of somebody. She couldn't quite grasp who but she knew that the face was really familiar.

'Nothing Nandini. I just didn't want to see Maan. I knew him once and we parted in no less than formidable circumstances and I just don't want another confrontation with him. Please understand.' Nandini nodded. She would analyze this another time; she was too exhausted to care right now.

Geet and Nandini exited the hospital quickly before another emergency appeared. As Geet was leaving, Maan was heading towards the room with the coffee. He saw two women in the parking lot. Was that Geet? That had to be Geet! He found her!

'Geet!' He called out her name.

Chapter 11

He dropped the coffee cups on the floor and ran behind her in the parking lot. By the time he got there, she had already left. Where was she? Was it his imagination or was she really there? No, his mind could not trick him like that, she was here. She really was here. He'd find her and ask her what had happened more than a decade ago. Why was their relationship this fragile? He would clear all misunderstandings with her and bring her in her life; if she wasn't already married.

He cursed at his bad luck and went to the cafeteria again for some coffee. He took it to the room where his mother lay. He gave a cup to Annie and kept one with himself. She looked at him with questioning eyes, what took him so long?

'Annie, I saw Geet here. You do know where she is right? You have to tell me! I won't hurt her. I promise. I need to ask her something. Please Annie, do this for your brother.' Maan pleaded.

She looked at his eyes and saw the need to see Geet. But she didn't want to see him. What was she supposed to do? Lie to her brother or betray her best friend? She took the most sensible route out, 'Maan, I know where she is. But I'm not going to tell you.' She told him quickly because she saw the flare of hope in her brother's eyes. Why did this have to be so complicated? 'I'll ask her first. I'll ask her if she wants to see you. If she agrees then I'll tell you. If not, I have no right to force you on her.'

He realized completely that his sister was a grown woman. She had to make difficult choices and she made them well. 'By the way Maan, Naintara's here. She came to see Mom and she said she wants to talk to you. She's in the waiting room. She looked really nervous. Did you guys have a fight?'

He looked puzzled. 'Not as far as I can remember. I'll just go see her. I'm glad Mom's doing well.' He kissed his mother's forehead and headed towards the waiting room. There he saw his friend cuddled up in a ball staring into space. He went to her and gave her a hug.

She looked at him with a jolt. She was just imagining what she was going to tell him and he had appeared out of thin air. 'Hey, Maan. I was really sorry to hear about aunty so I had to come and ensure that she was fine. You look tired, are you OK?'

'Yeah, I'm fine. It's just been a hectic day. Thanks for coming here. You look ready to cry, is everything OK with you?'

She took a deep sigh. This would probably be their last conversation ever. 'I don't want to do this but I realize that I have to. Maan, I'm sorry for everything. It was all my fault.' With that, tears started spilling down her cheeks. He sat down beside her to comfort her and was very puzzled. 'I'm the reason things went wrong between you and Geet. I know you'll never want to talk to me again but I have to tell you this,' she explained when Maan went still.

'I was in love with you. I was so much in love with you. All I could think of was you. Day and night. You wouldn't even look my way. I tried so many things so that you would notice me, but all in vain. I dropped my books whenever you were around and did all the silly things imaginable. But you were smitten by Geet. You wouldn't even look at me. All you saw was Geet. It was her day and night.

And then we became friends. I knew I had to have you. So I made her look like the bad guy. I always dropped hints that there was something going on between her and Arjun but you never believed me. I was furious. I had to make you notice me. Then I started creating circumstances that you would suspect her and I won. You pretended to her that you were cheating on her just to get back at her.

Then I waited for you. I waited for a decade. You still didn't notice me. As much as you claimed to hate her, you still didn't notice me. Although we were always together as friends, I always saw more in you. I always loved you and I always will. But I was so selfish! I'm not even going to ask you to forgive me. Because I know what I did was unforgivable.'

She looked at Maan who had fury in his eyes. She winced. She deserved it. What she had done, she deserved any punishment he would give her. 'So you were the one who did all this? I thought you were my friend! I suspected Arjun, my best friend, and Geet, the woman I love, because of you? I'm glad you straightened that out with me. I'm so glad you did. But you see, I had already started disbelieving that Geet had cheated on me so you're a trifle bit late. Now get out of my sight before I kill you with my bare hands. I don't hit women and I don't want to make this time an exception. I never want to see you again. Thank you so much for everything.'

He walked out of the waiting room and went to the parking lot. He was furious; more with himself than her. He didn't trust his best friend and his love. He trusted somebody who wanted to break them. The person had succeeded. He had been such a fool. How could he have let that happen? And now he had lost her forever. Was he too late? Did he stand a chance?

He'd find out. He'd find her and confront her. He would beg if he had to. He wouldn't let her go. What if she was married? She must have kids by now. Oh God, the pain was unbearable. He had screwed up his own destiny. Destiny had presented him with a rose and he removed the petals keeping the thorns. He was a fool. Would destiny give him another chance?

Chapter 12

Geet woke up with a smile. Although she would ensure that Maan and Kunal never met, at least she had a chance of seeing him for some time. She sighed. Her love for him should have diminished. It shouldn't have grown as it had. He had cheated on her. But wasn't she cheating on her son by not letting him know? Didn't he have a right to know the truth? He was old enough to know everything. Just because he never asked did not mean that he didn't want to know. He wanted to know very much. And today she would tell him. He would have to make his own decisions.

She went for a quick shower and got ready. She went to Kunal's room and woke him up with a kiss. He looked so innocent, her baby. Her courage failed her. She would not tell him today. No, she couldn't tell him yet. She would tell him, but she was too weak to tell him that now.

She got him ready quickly and waved him bye as he went in his school bus. Then the guilt weighed on her chest. She knew she was making a mistake by not letting him know. Would she lose him by the time she told him? She wouldn't lose her son. Not yet, not ever. She would tell him the truth soon. The truth.

She went to the hospital and checked where Maan was. He was at home. She breathed a sigh of relief. As much as she wanted to see him, she didn't want to let him know that she was here. He would find Kunal and then he would pressurize her to marry him because of their son. She wanted to marry him, but for herself. She gave herself a mental shake and asked herself what she was thinking about. They would never get married and that was that.

She went to Savitri Khanna's room to check on her. She saw that she was lying down with her eyes open. Geet smiled. This was her son's grandmother. She walked to her. 'Good morning, Mrs. Khanna. How are you feeling now? It's so good to see you awake. Where is your daughter?'

'Good morning, Doctor. I'm feeling alright thank you. I'm surprised that I survived that accident. I would have thought it to be impossible to survive such a crash. Annie's just here. She went to get herself some coffee. You know my daughter?'

'Yes ma'am. You're one of the very few lucky ones that survive such accidents. We're just glad that you're here with us today. I do know your daughter. We're friends. I better get back. I just wanted to check on you.' Geet leaned down and kissed her forehead. Savitri Khanna was surprised. The doctor was so affectionate towards her. Annie had some excellent friends, she decided.

Geet went outside before she made a fool out of herself. She was close enough to let her emotions override her. She had let her patient see how much she cared about her. And not just because she was a patient, but much more. Geet would have never forgiven herself if her son's grandmother would not have survived.

She was on the way to her cabin when she saw Annie with her coffee cup. She went towards her friend and smiled at her. 'I just met your mother and she's doing wonderfully. I'm so happy for you. She looks like a wonderful woman.'

Annie hugged her. 'Thank you so much Geet. Thank you so much for saving my Mom's life. You know she means the world to me.'

'I know Annie. I know how important mothers are. When I operated on her, I didn't know she was your mother. But I knew how important she would be to someone. And it was my duty. I didn't make it happen; it was all God's will. If He says yes, then it is yes.'

'Geet, let's go to your cabin. I need to talk to you.' She saw her friend's serious face and led her to her cabin. On the desk was hers and Kunal's photograph. She smiled looking at her son's photograph. They both sat down.

'Geet, Maan saw you. He doesn't know that you're a doctor here but he saw you last night.' She moved closer to Geet to comfort her when she realized that her friend had become stiff. 'He asked me where you were. I told him that I knew where you were but that I'd ask you if you wanted to see him. He was asking me about you before we found out about Mom's accident. So you've been on his mind for quite some time. What do you want me to tell him?'

Geet thought and thought but couldn't think of why he wanted to meet her. She knew he didn't know about Kunal. 'Why does he want to meet me now? The damage is done and I've moved on. I don't care what he thinks about me and I don't care about him.' Lying hurt. It hurt a lot. But she had to say that aloud so that it really did not matter. She had to convince herself. 'I don't want to see him.' Liar. You came today especially so that you could see him. 'Tell him no and to mind his own business.' Yes, he had to mind his own business. 'I'm sorry Annie but I don't think I want to see him.'

'It's OK. I understand. How's my nephew?'

They talked for a little while. After Annie left her cabin, Geet was left with a dull ache in her heart. She would not think about him and would keep her to herself. Thus began a very long day for the doctors. Emergency upon emergency came by and they worked very hard. They were all sick and tired of being in the hospital and longed for some rest. Geet went to her cabin and shut her eyes.

After a few minutes, she heard Kunal's muffled voice talking to someone. Strange, Kunal was in the hospital and he had not come to meet her. She went to the door and saw her son. With his father.

It seemed like they were talking in earnest. They stood in the corridor as if sharing secrets. She couldn't hear what they were talking about.

'I want to be like you when I grow up. I used to have many role models but just last week I decided that it was eventually you I wanted to be like.'

Maan smiled. This was one fine lad. He had his way with people. This little boy had certainly made a place in his heart. 'And what may I ask do you want to be when you grow up?'

'I'm going to be a doctor. Just like my Mom. I think she's the best doctor and me being her son, I just have to be a doctor. I love the way she keeps on saving people's lives.'

'Really? That sounds really impressive. Do you think you'll be able to handle the long hours and still have a life after that? Don't you think it's going to be a lot of work?'

'Yes Sir. It will be hard work. But my Mom manages it. I live with my mother and my grandmother. Even when my mom comes from the hospital after a long day, she still sits with me and talks to me. She helps me with my homework and we talk about everything. She knows everything there is to know about me. I love my mother and I'm proud of her.' Hmmm, Kunal determined. He would be a potential candidate for his mother. Both worked hard and were proud of what they did. He would try to bring them closer somehow.

'Seems like she's a great person. And it seems to me that you want to be like your mother and not like me.'

'That's not the case. I want to be like both of you. You both work really hard and I think you make everyone around you happy.'

I'll argue with you on that one, he thought. I hurt the very ones I loved. 'I'll have to meet your mother sometime. It was a pleasure talking to you Kunal. I better get going to my mother before she chews up my brain.' Father and son hugged.

Geet stood behind the curtains with tears in her eyes. Father and son had just hugged. Her son had just hugged his father. She would tell him tonight. She would tell him the truth tonight. She couldn't leave her son in the dark any longer.

That was exactly how Nandini found Geet when she was passing by Geet's cabin; Geet behind the curtain with tears in her eyes watching Maan and Kunal. Nandini had always wondered who Maan reminded her of. Seeing Kunal and Maan together she figured her answer. Maan always reminded her of Kunal. She looked at Geet and then gasped. Kunal was Geet's and Maan's son!
