Chapter 17
Geet saw her eyes fill and she replied, 'Of course you can call me Dadi. Even I have no one who calls me Dadi. Your mother's a very lucky woman to have you as her son, who is she?'
Kunal laughed innocently. 'Dadi, my mother is standing right behind me!' He was feeling exhilarated as his family was getting completed. He had met his Aunt Annie, Dad Maan and now Dadi Savitri. His life was just taking a perfect turn. Now it was up to him to make his mother realize the same thing.
Savitri's gaze passed Kunal and rested on Geet. She looked pleased. 'So you're his mother. I was wondering how children were allowed to get into patients' wards. Seeing you, I am no longer curious. Obviously, he's a doctor's son. No, let me correct that, he's Dr. Geet's son, how can he be questioned as to where he is going?' listening to her comment, the trio burst into laughter. 'I was wondering who could have such a sweet son; you being his mother explains it all.'
Geet smiled and became sad. She never got to know this woman. It would have been so pleasurable to have such a mother-in-law. She so obviously adored Kunal and she did seem to like Geet too. Geet tried to tell herself that there was no time for regrets. She wondered why it was becoming so difficult for her to convince herself otherwise. Maan's return to her life was creating more havoc than she had ever imagined. Was it worth it?
Geet walked to Savitri's bedside and checked on her. She was recovering very quickly which was good news. It saddened her to think of the limited time that Kunal had remained with her. They talked for a little while after which Geet dragged Kunal outside since it was time to go back home.
She pulled his ear and dragged him to her cabin. 'You spoilt brat, how many times have I told you not to go to the patients' wards without my permission?'
'Ow, ow. Mama, leave me. If I have to be a good doctor someday, I need to develop conversation skills with my patients right? Ow, mama it's hurting. Sorry, I won't do that again.' Geet laughed at Kunal's state because she knew that his was an empty promise. The day Kunal stopped going to the patients' rooms would be the day pigs would fly.
Geet went to Meera's cabin to say bye when she saw Yash and her talking and looking at each other which suggested that they were in love.
'Oh, now I see what is going on behind my back. How could you cheat on me Yash? And that too with my best friend? I didn't expect that from you! How could you? You actually cheated on me!' Geet asked looking miserable but unable to hide her grin.
At the same moment, Dev and Nandini entered the cabin. 'Who's cheating on who?' asked a confused Nandini.
Kunal giggled. 'Dr. Yash's cheating on Dr. Geet.' That made Nandini and Dev even more puzzled. Just what exactly was going on?
Seeing their dazed faces, Geet burst into laughter. 'You guys, I just caught Meera and Yash red-handed. They're dating and didn't even let us know! Can you believe that? They didn't let their best friends and siblings know! How rude!' Meera was blushing at the time this little speech was delivered by Geet. Yash also looked a bit embarrassed.
'This Geet can't even keep a single thing in her stomach.' Yash commented. Geet got into hysterics listening to this. Everything was just so hilarious! For some reason, Maan's face came in front of her and she sobered up quickly. Everyone was surprised by the sudden change in her mood. She said her byes to everyone quickly and left with Kunal. She couldn't understand why she was thinking of him at the oddest of times. She was having so much fun, so why did his face come to haunt her?
Rano was waiting for the mother and son pair when the duo reached home. She went to Kunal and grabbed his ear just as Geet had done earlier. 'Ow, ow, Nani. Now what have I done to you? It seems like both my favorite ladies want to kill me today. Ow, Nani, that hurts. Leave my ear.' Kunal shrieked like a child of half his age.
Rano clucked her tongue, 'You didn't even tell me that you were going to the hospital. If something would have happened to you, what would we do? Do you think before doing things?' Rano had been worried sick ever since she had discovered that Kunal was missing. She was just about to call Geet when they arrived. Rano left his ear and pulled him tight towards her.
'Oh, I'm sorry Nani. I think I forgot. Oh, I have to tell you something! I met Dadi today! I'm so excited! Can you believe it? She's so nice.' As an afterthought, he said, 'Of course not nicer than you!'
Rano and Geet laughed. He sure knew how to get out of sticky situations. I need to take lessons from my son, Geet thought.
The trio had a nice, simple dinner filled with conversation and laughter. This was the best time the three had. Simply being together and having a good time spoke volumes, according to Rano. Rano went to bed early as she was exhausted from the day's activities.
Geet and Kunal lingered downstairs after dinner with black forest cake. The chocolate cake with the wonderful icy, whipped cream with strawberries always made Geet's and Kunal's mouth water. There was always room for dessert, right?
They sat on the loveseats talking and laughing when suddenly Kunal remembered the conversation he had with his grandmother today. He looked at Geet, 'Mama, you know today Dadi and I were talking and she asked me a very interesting question. Why do I have two names when everyone else in the Indian culture has one name? Why am I Kunal Aditya Handa?'
'Well, it's because Maan wanted to name you Aditya. He really liked the name. As for Kunal, I really like that name, so I wanted you to have both the names we liked. And I also named you Aditya because I wanted you to feel close to your father. I wanted you to have that connection even if you did not know about him then.'
Kunal smiled. He liked that explanation. In fact, he really liked that explanation. He loved having two names. It meant both his parents loved him, even is his father did not know of his existence.
Meanwhile, Geet was thinking of how Maan and her were discussing baby names.
***********Flashback***********
They were in the garden. It was the perfect weather, the perfect garden and the perfect life. Maan was lying in Geet's lap and they were talking. They could talk about anything. This was one of the reasons why they had felt they could go on till forever.
'Geet, do you like kids?' Maan was in a mood of teasing Geet and at the same time was serious with his question.
'Of course I love kids. Who doesn't like kids? Some day I hope to have kids.' Geet said with a dreamy expression. Maan laughed at her innocence.
'I was hoping you would say that. You know how many kids I want? I think we should have four kids; two girls and two boys. I don't want any of them to feel left out. I will love them so much and spoil them. They will be the soul of my life.' Maan sighed. How had he become such a romantic?
'Oh really? What about me then? You just want kids, you'll forget me. I can't believe I'm not in your list of important people. You always mention Annie, your mom and now the kids. Do I even fit the bill?' she proceeded to fold her hands and express her mock sadness.
'I don't need to put you in any list because you are the list. How can I ever forget you? You're the number one for me.' He smiled and looked at her pouted face which in no time became the widest smile. She bent and gave him a quick peck on the cheek she was caressing before. 'You know what I'll name the first kid? If it's a boy, I'll name him Aditya who will be the symbol of our love. If it's a girl, I'll name her Sneha for our love. So basically, it will just be love.'
***********End of Flashback***********
Although Kunal was the product of their love, why was there so much distance between the two once-upon-a-time lovebirds? They were so much in love, what went wrong? Geet asked herself for the umpteenth time.

Chapter 18
Kunal looked up at his mother and asked her, 'Mama, my friends are going to a picnic tomorrow after school, can I go with them?' He really wanted to go because he wanted to spend some time with his male friends and because they were going to his favorite spot.
Geet thought over it. 'Where will they be going?'
'You know our favorite picnic spot, right? We'll be there. We'll be back way long before dark. Please Mama I really wanted to go.' Kunal wasn't pouting but he was very close to it.
Geet saw him and smiled. How could she deny him anything? 'Of course but remember, make sure you're back before dark. You know how worried we get because you'll always be our little baby. Kartik's mom will drive you right?'
Mother and son talked about the picnic. By the end of everything, he was extremely excited about it. He couldn't wait for morning. He went to his bed thinking he would never be able to sleep but in no time was he out. Geet tiptoed to his room, smiled at her sleeping son, kissed his forehead and tucked him in properly and left. She thought of the first time she had held him in her arms.
***********Flashback***********
Geet's labor was for an intense eighteen hours. It seemed like her son was in no hurry to get in the world. By that time she knew for sure that it was going to be a boy and the names were already selected for her son.
Geet's mother was beside her comforting and encouraging her daughter. Although Geet was almost blinded with pain, her mother's presence really soothed her. She would have never made it without her mother.
During her labor, Geet was thinking if she would be able to take care of her child. Would everybody accept her son? Would they accept a boy born out of wedlock? She knew she could easily have lied to anybody that her husband was dead or any other lie; but she didn't want to live her life as a lie. She would be proud of her son.
Geet's thoughts stopped when she felt another searing pain. Why was he troubling her so? Couldn't he just come see his mother now? She was desperate to see her baby.
When finally she gave birth to her son, all doubts vanished from her mind. When Kunal was placed in her arms, she knew that everything would be alright. She just needed to believe. They would go to another place. Thank God Arjun was her friend. During this incredibly difficult time, he was always there to support her. Just when she thought of him, he came to her. He saw Kunal in Geet's arms and smiled. He kissed Geet's forehead and took Kunal in his arms.
Geet talked to Arjun about relocating. Arjun always understood. She never had to explain herself to him. He was so much more than a brother to her. She would forever be grateful for such a wonderful friend.
Arjun suggested going to Nainital. Since Geet had wanted to become a doctor and the best hospitals were there, Geet followed his advice and was forever indebted to him.
***********End of Flashback***********
Geet went back to her room and morning came too soon for her. She quickly got ready and sent Kunal off to school.
Kunal had a wonderful day since his exams were already over. All he did was have an exciting time with his friends. They went to the picnic spot right after school. They climbed the hill and sang merrily on the way. They talked their boy-talk and enjoyed each others' company. They got to Kunal's desired spot when Kunal saw somebody seated there. Oh well, a little company would not hurt. Kunal did not want to go to the top of the hill but his friends wanted to so they would get together again on his friends' way down.
Kunal went forward and realized that the person seated there was Maan. He became really excited. He would have some time with his father.
Maan was in his own thoughts. He was thinking about Geet and their old times. He really missed her. He wanted to see her but he had promised he wouldn't and a Khanna never broke his promise. He heard somebody approaching and turned. He saw Kunal and was very pleased. For some reason he couldn't understand, whenever he was with Kunal, he felt a lot happier. He always felt some connection with this kid.
Kunal went and sat down beside Maan without a word. They looked at each other and felt compelled to hug one another. And they did just that. Kunal felt his universe was at its best. He was with his father. Oh, life was just incredible. Maan felt a pang in his heart. Why did this kid look so familiar to him?
'Hi, Mr Khanna. How are you doing? It's so good to see you. What are you doing here? You know, this is my favorite spot here! I haven't seen you in so long! Why don't you come to the hospital to meet your mother?'
Maan laughed. The boy was just full of questions. Maan remembered his childhood and saw himself in Kunal. 'Hmm, let's see in what order I should answer that. I'm fine and how are you? It's so good to see you too. I came for a walk and discovered this place and fell in love with it so here I am. I haven't seen in so long either. I do come to the hospital but late at night because I'm busy with work.' That was close to the truth. He did come late at night but to avoid Geet and not because of work.
Kunal laughed. He was on top of the world. Father and son were talking until suddenly Kunal sighed. 'Umm, Mr Khanna. I wanted to ask you a question. I figured you'd be the best person to answer it because Dr. Yash and Dr. Dev are busy with their love lives I need to ask a man this question.'
Maan tried his very best to keep his face straight. A little boy of ten years old was going to ask him for advice for his love life. 'Yes, go ahead, you can ask me anything.'
'There's this girl in my school, Pinky. We've always been in the same school and I really like her. She is an unusual girl. You know once I was trying to disturb her and she threw me on my back in a blink of an eye. That did it. We used to fight a lot but then we became friends. And now I think I really like her. How do I let her know?'
Maan couldn't stop laughing this time. This was just hilarious. When Kunal saw him laughing he nudged his father to stop laughing and tell him the reason of this laughter. 'Oh Kunal. You know I know this girl too! She did the same thing to me in my university days. That's exactly how we fell in love.' Maan sobered up. 'And then I screwed it up. But anyways, do something special for her; make her feel like she's the only, single, most beautiful person on this Earth.' Maan kept on giving Kunal ideas and his grin got wider and wider. It wasn't so bad after all.
'Thank you so much! Now you tell me what's wrong with your love life.'
Maan looked at Kunal thoughtfully. Should he be telling a kid? What the heck, he would do it. 'I messed it up with this girl really bad. And now she doesn't even want to see me. I don't know how to win her back.'
'Simple, don't see her for some time. She'll realize that she really missed you and wants to be with you. Then, when you go in front of her, don't give her too much importance. That will annoy her. But she'll really want to be with you. Then be nice to her and do sweet things for her!'
Maan looked at Kunal as if he was a genius. Maan realized that he could go till any extent to get the love of his life back. 'So, does anyone other than me know about your love life?' Maan asked Kunal.
'Yes, Mama knows. We talk about everything! From God to girls; from school work to her hospital work. We're really close.'
The pair chitchatted for some time until Kunal's friends returned. Kunal hugged Maan and left. Maan was left wondering why he could tell this kid anything and everything. Why did he seem someone that belonged to him?
