Chapter 5
Geet stepped out of the shower, wiped the steam from the mirror and stared at the pendant. She wore it because it made her feel close to Maan. It made her feel as if Maan was with her. She remembered that Maan was sitting outside the door. Her Maan was back. And she thought about what Maan had told her. Though it was not easy to believe, she was sure that Maan was telling the truth. She herself had suspected Dev a few times, but always dismissed it as her over-imagination. When she thought of Dev's odd phone call, about the vacation abroad in a week, about the strange timing of Dev's proposal her doubts were confirmed and nausea rode through her stomach. She got dressed, sucked in a breath and proceeded to open the door.
Maan heard the door unlock and looked up. The effect was a punch to his gut. There she was. Beautiful and poised. She had gone into the shower one woman, and she'd come out quite another. Granted she had taken her time, but he had to hand it to her. And one look at her told him that she had decided.
"Geet, are you ok?" Maan asked with concern.
She shook her head, went to the window and looked down the street. The men were still there. Maan came to her side. "I'll bet my life that those guys down there are waiting for orders to get you out of the country ASAP if things go sideways."
She said nothing.
He cupped her jaw, turned her face, making her look at him. "Dev cares for you and this family. He wants you all to be safe. That's why he is tailing you."
"Please understand me, Geet. I am here to save a billion others lives."
"You say this is going to happen in another six days, Maan?"
"If you don't help me stop it."
Geet stood silent for several minutes, staring into the street. "Why do you need me? Why don't you go get him yourself?"
"We can't. His security is excellent. If he gets as much as a whiff that we are on to him, those bombs could blow." Maan paused. "And if we try and take him down and he gets killed, those bombs could be programmed to go off anyway. He would have built in some kind of an insurance policy for himself. He alone has to stop this. You have to get me close to him, Geet. You have to get me into that inner sanctum of his, and together we must make him pull the plug."
Geet bit her bottom lip.
"It's the only way, Geet. If there was any other way, I would not have put you in this danger. I don't trust anyone but you to help me stop him Geet"
"Do you trust me Geet?"
Nerves skittered through her stomach. "Yes," she whispered. "I trust you. I believe in you. I... I've picked my side, Maan. I'm in your hands now"
Maan kissed her pouring all his emotions into that one kiss.
Maan kissed Geet. She could feel his energy. It literally pulsed through her, like it always had. This man was so alive. So vital. She swallowed, tried to look away, but he snagged her chin with his finger, forced her to look back into those dark eyes.
"Please, Geet."
Hot tears filled her eyes. She wanted Maan back. She wanted to tear that mask off his face, to see him, to know what was going on deep in his mind, at his core. She clenched her jaw in frustration as a tear slid down her cheek. He smoothed it away with the pad of this thumb and lowered his head.
"God, you have no idea how much I've missed you Geet." His voice was thick and rough and it curled through her. He brushed his lips softly over her wet lashes. Her throat tightened. She tried to regain her breath. The tension in the air was tangible.
Maan's hands found her waist, and he splayed his fingers over it and gently pulled her towards him. Geet forgot how to breathe. And then he kissed her again. Geet's knees went weak. She could feel the heat of his palm right through her clothes.
Maan looked at her longingly and said, "Do you know how truly beautiful you are?" Geet blushed.
"What happens now, Maan?" "How are you going to catch Dev?"
Here's how it goes Geet. Call up Dev and talk to him. Tell him you were upset last night since he called you late. Tell him that your cousin from USA came home after a real long time and that you were catching up. Convince him that you want to take your cousin along with you for the trip abroad. Dev would want to meet me. Tell him yes.
"But... Dev would recognise you, Maan."
"There are a lot of things I learnt in the army, Geet and one of those is disguise. I can be you long lost cousin" Maan smiled and Geet's heart skipped a beat.
Geet called Dev and told him the exact things that Maan had asked her to. Dev was shocked. "Who is this cousin of yours, Geet? I haven't heard you talk about him at all."
"It's ok, Dev. He is a distant cousin of mine. I want to spend time with him before he leaves the country."
"I want to meet him, Geet. After all, he is a cousin of yours. And I intend to marry you. So, he's family Geet."
"Of course, Dev. We can meet tonight at the hotel. See you tonight," Geet put down the phone. She had to stop herself from getting sick. It was not easy pretending to be nice to Dev when she knew what he was doing.
"Good job Geet." Maan said, watching her.
"Come on, lets get out of here. We have till night for the showdown. Let's spend some time together. I know a nice place where we can go. And I am sure you will love it." said Maan.
"Are you asking me out on a date, Maan?"
"I am trying to do what I should have done a long time ago. You never know how tomorrow will turn up, Geet. I want to spend every moment with you." Maan said sadly.
"What are you talking about, Maan? Once Dev is caught, you will come back to me, won't you?"
"Let's not worry about all that now Geet. Come on, or we are going to be late."
Maan took her hand and led her to his car. It was a convertible. He opened the passenger door for her. Once she sat in, he closed her door, climbed in the driver's seat. Geet looked at Maan. He truly was gorgeous. He meshed the rugged power with an urban sensibility. He made her stomach swoop. She remembered the kiss and her mind began to wander.
Maan shifted into first gear and swerved into the traffic with an exhibitonist shriek of rubber on tar. Geet braced her hand against the dash. Tires screeched. He'd stopped for the red light.
"When did you start having speed issues, Maan?" Geet asked.
"I am just trying to have some fun, Geet." he replied smiling.
"Could you possibly drive just a bit slower?"
The light turned green and Maan took off at a quiter speed this time, slowing to an almost regular pace.
Maan drove fast into the morning, clouds skudding high above them in an otherwise clear sky, the breeze refreshing, the top of the car still down. Geet had tied a scarf around her hair. They had blankets and a basket of food in the back.
"Where are we going to, Maan?"
"To the beach."
A couple of hours drive and they neared the shore. The traffic had thinned and Geet could smell salt on the wind. Maan floored the gas pedal as they hit the coast road and the wind tore her scarf loose from her hair. She caught it, lifted her chin, closed her eyes and let the breeze rush through her hair. Far from the city, she began to feel relaxed and free.
Maan stole a glance at Geet. She was smiling to herself, her eyes closed, her hair swirling and bouncing about her face. She looked blissfully happy. Something soared wildly in his chest, and a new energy bit fiercely at him.
Not only did he want to kill Dev, he wanted Geet with him. Completely. Forever.
Maan grinned, then turned onto a sandy road and wondered just how badly burned he was going to get before the job was done. He wanted to stop these feelings. But to hell with it. He loved her. Always had. And he was going to take what he could get, because he was pretty damn sure she wasn't going to see him again, once this was over. Ever. And for the first time, fear whispered through Maan. He focused on the road ahead, trying to hide the way he was beginning to feel.

No, Maan is not a bad guy... But something bad will happen and that is what he is scared about.
And he was going to take what he could get, because he was pretty damn sure she wasn't going to see him again, once this was over. Ever. And for the first time, fear whispered through Maan. He focused on the road ahead, trying to hide the way he was beginning to feel.
