Chapter 6

The beach was empty at this time of year especially in this weather. They walked in silence, thinking about everything that had happened here so many months ago, feeling the weight of lost time, of no time to lose, feeling the bite of salt and cold on the skin, the wet sand between their toes.

Geet shivered and Maan slipped his hand into hers. It seemed the natural thing to do. But neither wanted to speak, to give voice to their thoughts and break the spell, the strange sense that they were into the past, to a night one year ago, to something neither of them had been able to properly confront. Something both still had to deal with. Together.

The sun was rising high up in the sky. Maan brought out a blanket and the basket of food. They sat staring at the dark void of ocean enjoying their food. Geet felt more at ease with this man beside her than she'd felt in the past one year. Being with Maan felt natural - as ordinary and as vital to her well-being as the simple act of breathing. How strange it was to slip so easily back into the camaderie they shared when so many unexplained things lay in between. She looked at him.

"Tell me Maan, why are you back?"

"This is supposed to be a trick question, right?" said Maan smilingly.

"I am being serious Maan" replied Geet.

"To get you back, Geet." He didn't even blink.

"Do you mean that?" A dark thrill rippled through her.

"I always say what I mean."

"What about the army, the national security Maan? What will happen to me when you want to go back? Have you even thought about that? From what I see you love what you are doing now. Do you think you can give it up to be with me or do you want to have the cake and eat it too?"

"Let's think about all that later Geet. We are together, here, now. Let's just leave it at that." said Maan softly.

Geet stared at him, trying to read his eyes. She got up, went to the edge of the ocean and her eyes began to sting as the weight of what he had just said seemed to be coming down on her.

Maan let her be for a few minutes. He wanted her. It was the truest emotion in him. He knew why he survived the bomb blast. She was the reason for him being alive.

Maan walked towards Geet. He placed the palm of his hand against the side of her face, looked deep into her eyes, something so incredibly dear and gentle in his own. She didn't need the words. She didn't need to tell him. He understood. She could see it in his eyes.

"Please don't cry Geet. I cannot ever tolerate your tears."

Tears rolled hot down her cheeks. "I love you, Maan. So much."

His own eyes glistened sharply. The corner of his lip twitched. "I have always loved you Geet" he whispered leaning closer.

"Can you please understand why I had to be away from you for the past year?" asked Maan.

"Maybe some things can never be understood. Maybe they just need to be accepted. And maybe then we can move on."

He nodded.

"We have both been given a second chance here. It's what happens next that matters. That will be our test."

"What will happen next, Maan?"

Something shifted in his eyes and his features. So did the tone of his voice. "Do you trust me, Geet?"

Unease tightened her chest. "I... I am not sure I like the way you said it, Maan."

"I need you to trust me, Geet." The intensity in his voice was alarming.

"Yes Maan. I trust you and I believe you."

Maan let out a sigh of relief.
