Chapter 2
Her Maan was alive.
Questions arose wildly in her mind starting so many threads that she could not think properly. If Maan was alive, why had he not contacted her during the last year? Why was he back now? Where had he been all this time?
"Maan...?"
"Yes Geet, it is me."
Geet stared at him. This was impossible. She had seen Maan's dead body. She still could not believe it.
"God, it's good to see you again," he whispered as he touched the small gold locket at her throat his fingers brushing her skin.
A jolt of realisation ripped through her so sharp, so fierce that she gasped, tried to jerk back. But he tightened his grip, held her close.
"You kept it," he said, lifting the pendant. "All this time, and you still wear it."
Her eyes began to water. It really was him. One touch and her body and soul were alive, responding to him, whether her mind followed or not.
His eyes burned into her sucking in every little detail he had missed one the last few months, devouring her.
"Talk to me, Maan. Why are you back, what happened, where have you been all this time? What are you doing hiding in your own home?"
He moved his hand from the pendant, bent his head, his lips almost touching her, his breath warm and soft as a feather. "I need your help," he whispered. "It's a matter of national security" said Maan and sighed deeply. "Do you know how much I've missed you, how much I've missed this----" and pulled her into a hug.
The man she had loved all her life with all her heart was back in her arms, hugging her and holding her. Emotion imploded and she became incapable of pulling away. Tears spilled down her cheeks freely washing away the months. So many, many lonely nights, she had dreamed of this one day. Suddenly nothing mattered but his moment.
She leaned into him and touched his face. Suddenly she felt the line of his scar under her fingertips. Reality exploded sharply through her brain. She stilled. She slowly traced the line along his cheekbone to the corner of his mouth. He felt the question in her touch.
"The bomb blast," he said simply, covering her hand with his own and pulling her back to him.
The blast that was supposed to have killed him.
Geet pulled back and forced herself to take a step back. He let her, his eyes watching her intently.
"What... what do you mean, you need my help? And what about national security?" She asked. "Does this have anything to do with Dev?"
Maan looked at her enquiringly. Geet suddenly felt embarassed. Why should he be making her feel guilty? He was the one who had betrayed her. He was the one who left her. He let her think he was dead all these months. Why should she feel even vaguely compelled to explain anything to him.
"We have a lot to talk about, Geet. May I come in?"
"You are in,"she said.
"May I come in Geet?" he asked again.
"Sure. Please come in. Please come back from the dead, Maan. Please walk right back into my life, my room" she said angrily blinking back the tears.
Something dangerous and hot flashed in his eyes.
Geet stared at him blankly. She should run. She didn't know who this person was. Then again, whom was she kidding. This was her Maan, except that he had changed. A deep and desperate curiosity stopped her in her tracks. This was her soulmate, the man she was going to marry. And he was here, back in his house, in her room. She needed to do this. She needed to know why, where he'd been.
