4.The Shifting

A few weeks later...

Sometimes all it takes is one meeting to build lasting relationships. You meet a person for the first time and that instant rapport makes you believe in reincarnations. Otherwise, how can you explain that strong bond and affectionate love you feel towards this person who was unknown to you yesterday. Within a span of an hour's visit Geet brought new hope and zeal for life in Daadi and her visits became a routine. It didn't take more than a few days for Geet to become the grandchild of her heart. So when it was time for Rano's ( Geet's mother) operation daadi was with Geet to lent her moral support. She had already met Rano as Geet's boss's grandmother. Earlier they had decided that if and when the question about the treatment fees arose, Geet would say it was a loan from her office. So, when Geet's pregnancy would start to show they could arrange for someone to look after her mother and an excuse of an out of country project would solve the problem of Geet's absence.

Daadi knew Maan frowned upon her involvement with Geet. He wanted the relation to be strictly business. He even monitored their earliest meetings. May be Geet too was aware of his reservations because she was very subdued whenever he was around.

But how could you not admire and appreciate the devotion of a daughter, who was willing to take up the unexpected and the unimaginable act of being an unmarried mother by her own choice just to extent a few years of her mothers life? A road accident had caused serious brain damage to Rano, which went undetected until recently. Added to headaches and black outs Rano did not even recognize her Geet at times. So Daadi had felt it was her duty to be there for Geet.

Now she was really worried about Geet. It was more than a week since Rano's death and Geet was still holding all her grief inside her. She hadn't cried even once during this weeek and as time passed she became more and more withdrawn. The vacant expression in her eyes was starting to scare Savithriji. She was sure Geet even forgot to take her medicines or food, if the her sudden weight loss was anything to go by. Geet had refused to stay in Khurana Mansions. Today it was past the time of her visit and she was unable to reach Geet by phone. Daadi even tried calling the neighbour, but she too was visiting her sister in Agra. So finally Daadi called her personal trouble shooter, Maan, and asked him to check on Geet.

"Yes daadi, I've nearly reached. But if you keep calling me while I'm on the road, you will have to bail me out from the police station! I told you I will call you, no make your 'ladlee' call you as soon as I see her." As soon as I give her an earful on her irresponsible behaviour, he thought as he paused."now, wait for my call!" he ordered before he cut the call.

When Geet didn't answer the door, Maan became concerned. Daaadi's panic must be rubbing off on me, he thought as he tried the knob. To his surprise he found that the door was not locked.

"Foolish girl! Doesn'it even have the sense to lock the door, when she is alone. Daadi is right, she shudn't be living alone," he muttered as he entered.

He ran towards Geet lying unconscious on the floor with fragments of broken glass near her.

"Geet! Geeet! Open your eyes" he held her gently in his arms as he tried to revive her.

Finding that he cudn't wake her with his summons he carried her to the divan and laid her down.he tried to wake her again by sprinkling water on her face. She stirred just to open her eyes and say his name and then sank bak again.

He called his family physician and barked out the address, all the while trying to warm Geet's hands and feet by rubbing them with his hands. By the time the doctor arrived Maan was back in his tyrannical self, shouting at daadi thru' the phone, pacing the room while giving angry looks and muttering angrily at a now conscious but frightened Geet. In between he found time to make tea and toast for her.

The doctor found that added to the general weakness, which he said, was to be expected, there was also Blood Pressure concerns. She was advised to take rest and make an appointment with the doctor the next day. As soon as the doctor went, Maan closed the door and ordered Geet,

" Lie down and don't move!" then he stalked off to her bedroom.

Curious, Geet followed him an dfound him opening her cupboard and taking out her clothes to carry it to the cot.

"What are you doing?" Geet asked holding on to the door for support.

"Packing your things...you are coming with me...and didn't I tell you to lie down?" he pulled down a bag from the top of the cupboard and started putting her clothes in.

"But..." she started to walk forward and swayed dizzily. Maan saw her unsteady and strode forward to catch her.

" Didn't I tell you to lie down?" he asked angrily, as he carried her to the bed. He felt her flinch and tense in his arms. Inwardly cursing himself for frightening her, he put her down. When he leaned forward to adjust her pillows, she moved back further as if his nearness frightened her. He stood back and passed his hands thru' his hair with a frustrated sigh.

"I didn't mean to frighten you Geet." She still kept her eyes downcast. He sat down on the edge of the bed, facing her.

"Look Geet, after what happened today, you cant stay here alone. You know you were unconscious for more than an hour. You don't seem to be able to take care of urself. So you have to stay with us. Anyway according to the contract you need to stay with us after a couple of months...now just take that you have to come with us a bit early."

Maan continued as he saw her shaking her head, "Okay, if you don't want to go, then I will stay with you here tonight. There is no way I'll let you stay alone...let me just call daadi and let her know."

She looked at him dumb struck, her eyes reflecting her panic.

"Excuse me," he said as he got up to from the cot.taking out his mobile he walked towards the door.

"I'll go..." a feeble voice stopped him in his track.

"Okay then, let me pack your bag. You may help by checking if you need anything else."

With an arrogant smirk, he went back to packing.

few of my friends were sad that the last update was a small one, hope this will make them happy...though maaneet moment was short...

phew, moms operation is over, she is fine...thanx to the prayers that poured in...gupta period still lagging though the submission is on friday😉...so next update will be only after that
