Part 13



The alarm went off, Geeta hit the snooze button and thought to herself 9 more minutes, yes! She went back deep into the covers and just when she had gotten comfortable once again, her cellphone started to ring. "Who could it be, calling her at this time in the morning?" she thought, she squinted at her phone and recognized that it was her mom.

She picked up,"Hello, mamma." she said groggily. "Why are you calling so early?" she asked annoyingly.

"Well meera baccha, first of all do I need to take an appointment to call you? I am your mother after all, I can call whenever I want, right. Well to answer your question, you asked me to wake you up at 7:30am, that's why I am calling." Geet answered sternly yet lovingly.

It had been two days since Geet had dropped off Geet at Harvard and Geeta was trying to get into the rhythm of the university. It was extremely hard, at home her mom would wake her up, make breakfast and make sure she had everything she needed for the day. Her mom always took care of her. For the first time, she was all alone; she was responsible for everything in her life, her sleep, her food, her books, her classes and her time. She was finding it difficult but she had been told that it would get better.

Everyone she had spoken to at Harvard had told her that the first week was the most stressful to deal with. Geeta was looking forward to this week being done with. She was looking forward to the weekend. She had been invited to a few parties and she was ready to let her hair loose and start experiencing college life.

"Sorry and thank you, mamma. I miss you, I should get going now, I have to get ready as I have class....." Geeta started saying but her train of thought was interrupted when she heard someone talking in the background on the other side. It was the voice of a man. A man, who could it be? She had never seen her mom show any interest in men.

"Who is that in the background, mamma?"she inquired.

Geet was taken by surprise, she looked at Maan with an angry annoying look. Maan quickly stopped talking on the phone and went to another room to continue the converstaion. He was on the phone with a client in India. Geet sounding a little nervous,"What are you talking about, there is no one here, its probaby just the TV. I was watching the news when I called you; are up now?, can I hang up?, I need to get ready for work."

"Yeah! I am up, I need to get going too, I have my Asian history class in about 30 minutes. Have fun at work. Love you, mamma." Geeta said.

"Okay, take care of yourself, make sure you eat on time and study hard. I love you too, meera baccha. Talk to you in the evening. Bye"saying this Geet hung up the phone.

At Harvard, as Geeta hung up the phone, she was certain that she had heard the voice of a man in the background as she was talking to her mom. Her mom had said it was the TV, but it sounded so real. She got out of bed, gathered her toiletries and went to the bathroom. As she was getting ready Geeta kept on thinking about what she had heard. Her mom never lied to her, so why today? She knew something was up when her mom got off the phone so quickly.

In her 18 years she had never heard her mom mention men and she had never seen her with a man either, so who was that in the background? Could it have actually been the TV? Was she hearing stuff?, maybe the stress of the last two days was getting to her. She had to get used to Harvard fast else she was going to go crazy.

Geeta couldn't however get the voice out her head though, she kept on thinking about the voice through all her classes, through lunch, while signing up for extra-curricular activities, while meeting her roommate for coffee, through dinner, and even as she went to sleep. Although she had only heard a few syllables, the voice had seemed familiar, she just couldn't put her finger on where exactly she had heard it and whom it belonged to. She was now sure that it wasn't the TV, there was actually someone with her mom. Well it was time to sleep so she pushed the thoughts that had been bothering her and closed her eyes. She was so tired that within minutes she was fast asleep.

In New York, Geet had just finished speaking to Geeta and was fuming with Maan's behavior. For the first time, she had lied to Geeta and she was not happy about it. She had given up a lot and had struggled to keep Geeta away from her past and today because of him, she had almost gotten caught. She was however sure that she had been convincing when she told Geeta that it was the TV that she had heard.

She went looking for him. He was in Geeta's room once again. She had found him there a handful of times in the last two days. She hadn't disturbed him all those times but today she was furious."Maan why the hell were you talking on the phone so loudly?"she continued "Didn't you see that I was on the phone?"

"Sorry Geet, I was on the phone with a client and didn't notice you on the phone. I am really sorry, was it an important call?"Maan said innocently."Was it work?"he asked after a short pause.

Still fuming Geet replied turning away from Maan and walking down the stairs to the kitchen,"Yes, it was an important call, I was on the phone with Geeta, you know she heard you in the background. Like you said she is intelligent, she started to ask questions, you know. I had to lie to her, for the first time in her life, I lied to her."Her eyes had welled up as she was yelling.

Her eyes couldn't hold them anymore and they started to fall,"Why did you come back, why did you come back now?, I worked to hard to protect her from the past, I can see all my work going down the drain. Why, oh! why?" she questioned Maan, now openly sobbing.

Maan walked up to Geet and tried to hold her, she just pushed him away. It seemed that she wasn't really interested in hearing what he had to say, but he tried anyways.

"Geet, I came back for us, and by us I mean You, Geeta and me. Geeta is grown up now, she can face the truth. She is a smart girl, she will be able to understand everything. She may actually surprise you with her maturity." Maan replied.

"No, I don't want her finding out anything. Do you understand that?" Geet said with conviction.

"Geet please try to understand, this situation is not fair to anyone. You and I were separated, okay we lived the pain but Geeta had a father and yet never had his love. Don't you think she deserves to know she has a father, don't you think I have a right to take care of my daughter."he pulled Geet into an embrace.

Geet still sobbing replied,"We lived through the pain so that she could have a great life. I provided her with everything she needed, She may have not have had her father in her life, but she still got all the love. I was her mother and father. I loved her for the both of us. Geeta is still young, she doesn't need to deal with the past at this point in time. She needs to focus on her studies, she worked so hard to get into Harvard, I don't want anything to hinder her success. So please don't ask such difficult questions, Maan."

They pulled away from the hug and went to the dining table, they pulled out the chairs from under the table and sat down. They sat there in silence for about 30 minutes. Neither one of them wanted to say anything in haste. They were both emotional and weren't sure exactly what would come out their mouths. Yes the time that had passed had some advantages, they no longer hurt each other with words they didn't mean. With age came wisdom.

Maan finally got up and went to the study. He returned with a notepad and pen. He started to write."I am sorry I ruined the great time we were having. I didn't want to create any problems." He passed the notepad to Geet.

Geet read it and wrote back,"Its okay, I understand your pain, I don't know what I would have done if I didn't have Geeta."

Maan takes a look as what she wrote and replies,"Well, then can we please come up with a compromise that wont be as painful as the one before?" He passed the notepad to

Geet who wrote back, "Unfortunately, I don't want what happened today repeating again anytime soon, so I have to say no. No new compromise."

Reading what Geet had just written, Maan looked at her with pleading eyes as if to say"please don't do this again, please don't cut me out of your life once again.".

Geet decided it the whole note writing exercise was enough and decided to speak once again,"Look, Maan, this is going to be difficult, so I promise, to send you regular updates on Geeta and me. I will send you photographs and videos. I will even call once in a while. But I really don't think I am ready to do any thing more than that at the moment. I don't have the courage. I am not strong, I am so sorry to do this to you all over again."

Maan looked at Geet and saw the pain in her eyes, he was certain that she really didn't want to hurt him, she was just doing what any mother would do, protecting her baby and once again he put Geet's wishes ahead of his and nodded his head as if to say"Its okay, don't be sad."

He stood up from his chair and went to Geet, he pulled her up to himself and hugged her tight. He never wanted to let her go. Geet hugged him back just enjoying Mann while he was with her.

Once again they got caught up in the moment and before they knew they were repeating their actions from the night before, all over again.

Laying in bed in each others arms they were content. Maan looked at Geet and said,"I have something for you, I hope you like it."He got out of bed and got the little blue box out of his jacket and placed it in Geet's hands.

"They are perfect. Thank you" Geet exclaimed looking at the contents of the box.

"No, you are perfect" Maan continued ,"I am so happy you like them."

After about a half-an-hour they got dressed and went back downstairs, Geet had to get some work done and so did Maan. They got busy with their work and only took a break for lunch. Geet just ordered something from the corner deli and they enjoyed their food.

Maan,"Geet I just wanted to tell you, that I have to go back to India, day after tomorrow. Just spoke to one of my clients and for us to finalize the contracts by the start of next week. I don't want to leave but I don't know what else to do. Would you consider letting me live here and working from here?" He smile a mischievous smile.

"No you cannot live here" Geet yelled at him playfully."I am sorry that you have to leave so soon. Lets just enjoy the day we have together"

They were glad that things had turned positive once again.
