PART - 3:
It was almost 5 p. m. in the evening. Prithvi and his friends were sitting in the bedroom and his friends were on the point of asking him about the conversation he had with his grandfather behind the closed doors in the afternoon when some voices penetrated from the living room downstairs .
"Lagta hai tumhare guests aa gaye Prithvi." Samar remarked.
Prithvi motioned them to be quiet and listened attentively for a few minutes. "You are right. And its time we all should go down before dadaji calls me." He said getting up.
The words were barely out of his mouth when the door opened and Vaidehi came in. "Bhaiya, dadaji aapko bula rahe hain. Pandit mukharjee aur Nandini aa chuke hain."
"Mujhe pata hai, tu chal mai aata hun."
Vaidehi nodded and left. Prithvi turned towards his friends. "Tum log yahan rukoge ya chaloge mere saath?" he asked them.
"Jaisa tum kaho, we don't have any problem." Aayush replied.
Prithvi thought for a while and then said, "Thik hai chalo, warna agar kismet kharab hui toh dadaji fir kahenge ki maine tum logon ko akela chod diya."
Together, they went out of the room. As he was descending the steps a booming male voice floated upto his ears. "Aur kahiye Subhod babu, kaisa raha aapka safar?"
He smiled to himself; his grandfather had started his long talks and this was the beginning.
"Humara safar bahut acha raha. Kya Karen, iss baar aapka anurodh hum taal nahi sake." Prithvi heard a voice which belonged to Pandit Mukharjee. "It is him." He thought trying for the umpteenth time to judge the old man who was his grandfather's best friend. He knew Pandit Mukharjee was a celebrated guitarist and his grandfather was a passionate music lover. Music had bonded these two seasoned people in an association long back which had weathered the test of time, remained firm and unshaken and was currently celebrating its silver jubilee. He had himself heard Pandit Mukharjee as a child and even in his growing years and remained devoted to his music. Prithvi really had a penchant for music and could sing relatively well. However it was the instruments which gave him real pleasure; table and sarod being his favourite instruments. He could play the table with ease and many a times the grandfather ' grandson pair indulged in their musical nights whenever they felt like it.
It had been 3 long years since Prithvi had last met Pandit Mukharjee whom he lovingly referred to as Dadu. His studies had taken a toll on their meetings and much as Prithvi tried not to show it he was really very excited to meet his dadu who always managed to bring out the childish streak in him which otherwise always remained dormant even with his own grandfather.
"Aur kya, teen saal ho gaye hume mile hue aur iss baar agar aap humari baat nahi maante na Subodh babu toh hum aapko aur Nandini beti ko bandi banakar le aate."
"Bilkul sahi kaha apne Dadaji." A soft musical female voice hit his ears and Prithvi stopped dead in his tracks. Was he day dreaming? This was the same voice which...........................
He stood there right in the middle of the staircase looking straight ahead at the wall his eyes open wide with horror and shock. Samar who was coming right behind him bumped into him but Prithvi didn't move a bit.
"Prithvi chalo niche, ruk kyun gaye?" Samar whispered irritated rubbing the tip of his nose which had collided with Prithvi's broad back. No response.
"Prithvi chalo bhi." Came Mrigank's voice, still no response.
Aayush, who was walking with Prithvi and had gone down a couple of stairs suddenly realized that Prithvi was not with him. He turned back to see Prithvi standing on the stairs in a state of stupor, Samar whispering and rubbing his nose simultaneously and Mrigank and Arjun staring at Prithvi in surprise. He walked back and nudged Prithvi.
"Aaah... haan Aayush?" he questioned, a bit lost.
"Chalen?"
"Haan...??? haan chalo." And composing himself, he went down the steps.
************
Pandit Mukharjee was sitting on a sofa talking with his best friend while his granddaughter was sitting next to the latter when he felt some tickling sensation on his left foot. He partially turned towards his left and saw four young boys standing in a row looking at him. He then felt a sensation on his right foot and looked down.
He saw a bunch of black hairs and a kurta pajama clad body bending down at his feet. Taking the boy by his shoulders he raised him and without even waiting to hear anything he hugged him tightly. "Prithvi, kaise ho beta?"
Prithvi hugged him back fiercely. "Thik hun dadu, aap kaise hain?"
They separated and Pandit Mukharjee looked at the smiling face of the boy in front of him, "Thik hun beta. Tumhe naya saal Mubarak ho."
"Aapko bhi dadu." He smiled.
"Isse milo Prithvi, meri poti Nandini. Tum itni baar Kolkata aaye ho par kabhi mile nahi isse. Milte bhi kaise, ye to videsh me thi. Pichle teen saal se hai mere saath, aur pichle teen saal se tum nahi aaye."
Forcing himself to curb the rising uneasiness which threatened to show itself on his face, Prithvi turned back towards his grandfather who was sitting across the centre table. He had seen the thin frame of a girl snuggled next to his grandfather and out of awkwardness hadn't looked at her. But now, there was no way out. He looked at her with nervousness and immediately his throat jumped into his mouth. "Oh my god!!!"
The girl sitting on the sofa was dressed in a black coloured jeans and light blue coloured knee length kurta. She stood up as he turned. He found her to be slim and tall with waist length long hair which was left loose. Blue coloured stone studded ear rings were hanging from her ears and a watch with a silver band was the only other accessory that she had on her person. However, it was her large, kohl stained, expressive eyes which caught his attention arousing in him a sensation of deja-vu. For the first time perhaps, Prithvi found himself at a loss of words. The girl standing in front of him was too ethereal for him to believe in. He really wished all this to be a dream and badly wanted to get up and to not find her there.
But she was a stark reality of his life standing right in front of him. "Ananya..." he murmured in his mind.
"Hi... I'm Nandini." She put out her hand. He shook it like a statue, as if he was in a trance. Nobody noticed his apparent uneasiness... nobody other than her, and her eyes narrowed as she surveyed him thoughtfully. He was too caught up to say anything to her.
