Nandini sprinkled the cold water on her face to wash away the remaining traces of soap. For the hundredth time perhaps, she thought about the utter shock on his visage. Why was he so shocked to see her? Didn't he like her? But her grandfather had told her that he was a very friendly boy, a bit reserved though; but he was firm that he would like her. Only then had she agreed to come with him to Udaipur. And this was certainly not the reception she was expecting. She patted her face dry with a towel and changed into a more comfortable dress. Hanging the towel on the rod, she came into her bedroom and crashed on the bed. The journey had been very tiring for her, not that she showed it on her face.
She could remember the excited banter of Mrigank, Arjun and Samar as they welcomed her eagerly; Arjun even going to the extent of saying that they expect some fun filled moments with her. Amidst the chattering, she heard the quiet "Hi! Welcome to Udaipur Nandini." from Aayush. She had liked him immensely; quiet and well behaved he was very different from others. But it was Prithvi who seemed to be flustered. Did he resent her coming here? But why should he? He had remained silent all throughout the discussion in the living room, and then Raja sahib took her dadu along with him asking Prithvi to show Nandini her room. He had obliged without a murmur of protest and had brought her here. One of the servants placed her luggage in the room. After the departure of the servant he had simply said that he hoped she would be comfortable here and he will come back to call her for dinner and had gone out.
Another figure flashed in front of her eyes; it was that of Vaidehi. She was in complete contrast to her brother; he was silent, she was talkative; he was reserved, she was free mixing; he was rude and she ' she was polite. Rude... she thought wryly. Perhaps she was being too harsh on him. Maybe she was a stranger and that's why he had behaved in such a way!!!
A knock on the door brought her out of her reverie and she called out a come in sinking deeply into the bed. It must be Vaidehi, nobody else. She heard the door open behind her and the footsteps came to a halt. "Come in Vaidehi, why are you standing in the doorway?" Her mobile rang just then and with a vexed sigh she picked it up. She heard in silence for a few minutes before losing patience and finally hissed in anger. "Will you just shut up?" What followed next was a heated monologue in bengali at the end of which Nandini snapped the phone shut and threw it on the bed.
"Arey Vaidehi baitho na, khadi kyun ho?" she turned towards the door.
"Prithvi!!!" she stood still, not knowing what to say or how to react for a while. A cute smile was playing on his lips as his hands were crossed across his chest and he was surveying her with an amused glance.
"Wo... actually..." she didn't know what to say.
"Its okk, I understand. Mobile phones are a disturbing element." That broke the ice between them.
"They sure are." She nodded her head in anger and again sat down on the bed in a huff. "Take a seat, and... oh... please don't mind my temper. I'm too angry to..."
"React in a proper way." He came and sat down on the bed, though a bit self consciously. The chair was at the other corner of the room and it was stacked with books which Vaidehi had left unmindfully.
"Ye Ved ka hi kaam hai na." Prithvi asked pointing towards the books. "Ye ladki bhi na... kabhi nahi sudhregi."
Nandini smiled in return. "It's okay, chalta hai ye sab."
"Arey, aap toh badi achi hindi bol leti hain?" He asked striving hard not to lose track of his real intentions.
"Kyun, nahi bolna chahiye mujhe?" she enquired. "It's okay, I won't speak in Hindi." She added seriously.
"I didn't mean that." Prithvi protested with a shocked face. Why was everything going wrong with him today? First he became tongue tied in her presence and he knew that she had noticed it. And now, she became serious when he said about her hindi. He had meant it as a compliment, why did she have to take it as a comment. "I mean..." he blabbered, not knowing what to say.
Nandini surveyed him with thoughtful eyes, the serious expressions not leaving her face. After some time, the corner of her lips gently twitched slightly. A slow smile played over her lips, which turned into a grin and finally unable to control herself any longer, she burst out laughing making Prithvi stare at her dumbly.
"Good Heavens, you should have seen your face." She went on laughing uncontrollably, making him red in the face. He was ashamed at his own reaction. He was irritated with himself, irritated at his own stupid behavior. But finally, her infectious laughter caught up with him and he too started laughing.
"Oh... ho... bhaiyaaaa......................... hume bhi batao itni hasi kyun aa rahi hai?" Vaidehi came into the room and stood in front of them. By now Nandini was trying hard to stop her laughter. "Oh Vaidehi, your brother... oh my god..." she sobered up a little with great difficulty. "Do you know what he said?" and she proceeded to tell her everything. That evening Prithvi for the first time found himself cornered by his sister all thanks to Nandini.

The talks on the dinner table centered mostly on music with Pandit Mukharjee and Surendra ji leading the discussions. Nandini took this time to carefully survey the people around. Her eyes rested on the jovial old man sitting at the head of the table and talking with her dadu. An aura of royalty was emanating from him, even a glimpse would be sufficient to subdue the people into voluntary obedience. She looked at her dadu... the two friends were of the same age group... so different, yet so same; different backgrounds, yet best friends. Her dadu was of average height, 5'10" to be precise where as Raja sahib was over 6' tall. The latter had a commanding personality where as the former possessed a captivating one; the latter had a fiery temperament where the former was of gentle disposition; her grandfather was dressed in a simple grey coloured kurta pajama where as Raja Sahib was wearing a designer one in light blue colour. She wondered how in spite of so many differences, the two had managed to remain friends. One thing however she had to admit; Raja sahib was anything but proud. Even after belonging to the royal family, she had never met a person who was so humble and down to earth. He could bear anything. Probably these similarities had been stronger than the differences, she mused. There was one more difference; she thought amused, dadu was almost bald where as Raja sahib was not.
She turned her attention towards Sukanya Devi, Prithvi's mother. She was a middle aged lady, still thin for her age, was clad in a pink coloured silk saree and her hairs tied in a French bun. "Must be about 50." Mused Nandini to herself and then turned her attention towards Suryapratap Singh, Prithvi's father. He was an exact replica of his father. He had inherited everything from Raja sahib; from the height to the built; from the perfection of the features to exactly the same type of manners. However, Nandini could see that he was not so commanding as his father, but he was everything else ' kind, benevolent, gentle and of course humble.
Vaidehi was of course naughty, childish, humorous and a prankster. Nandini liked her a lot. And Prithvi's friends were also very nice. But Prithvi ' Prithvi was a little mysterious. She could sense that he had wanted to say something to her in her room, but the conversation went in different direction.
The meal was finished with the elders leading the talks while the children with the exception of Vaidehi kept quiet. Later Nandini went to her room and crashed on her bed. The shocked face of Prithvi kept on wafting in and out of her mind but she was too tired to think anymore. She drifted off to the land of dreams within minutes.
