Kripa reeled backwards, the color draining from her face. Angad took a step forward, ready to catch her in case she fell. He had never seen anyone lose blood that quickly before and even though he was no doctor he knew that this was not a good sign.

Kripa stared at him as if he had just grown another head. She had a daughter. It was impossible. Forgetting a marriage she could justify. Forgetting a daughter she could not. What kind of mother wouldn't know that she had a daughter, even if she did have amnesia? Wouldn't some kind of maternal instinct or something have kicked in when she had regained consciousness? And even if it hadn't, how can she possibly justify not recognizing her daughter when she was sitting across from her having breakfast? It was just...wrong. What kind of mother was she?

Wait, maybe I'm jumping to conclusions, she thought. Maybe he had a wife before we got married and Sonia is from his first marriage. Kripa decided to test her theory.

"She's our daughter?" she asked still trying to come to terms with the news.

"Yes," Angad answered calmly.

"Ours?" Kripa asked again pointing first to him and then herself.

"Yes," he enunciated carefully as if she was the one with the two heads now.

"Ours?" she asked once more, gesturing wildly in the air.

Angad didn't answer this time. He just looked at her.

Kripa took a deep breath. It was plain to see that he didn't get it.

"I'm asking if she came from...well me."

Angad continued to look at her uncomprehendingly.

She shook her head in frustration

"Did she come from me?" she asked again enunciating the last two words and imploring him with her eyes to understand what she was trying to ask without going into a biology lesson. She didn't want to just come out and ask if their daughter was from his first marriage because if she wasn't, it would just make Kripa look like the world's worst mother.

"Well, not just from you. I believe males are needed to have children as well," he said wondering if her loss of memory had rendered her completely brainless.

Kripa let out a frustrated breath. Leave it to a man to be completely thick when it came to important matters.

She decided to try another route.

"Is this your first marriage?"

"What?" He looked even more confused at the sudden change in topic.

"Have you ever been married before we got married?" she asked once more, wondering why it was so difficult for him to answer such simple questions.

"Noooo," he said dragging the word out.

"Are you sure?" she asked a little anxiously.

"Yes."

She fell silent at this, her brow furrowed in thought. Well that ruled out the whole first marriage theory. Kripa was sure that Sonia Khanna wasn't adopted because she looked too much like Angad for that to be possible.

Maybe we used a surrogate mother, Kripa thought a little desperately refusing to believe that she was an awful mother who couldn't recognize a child that she had given birth to.

"Do we have any close female friends?" she asked desperation clear in her voice.

Angad looked at her as if she had lost a few marbles.

"Are you alright?" he asked, incapable of taking anymore of her strange questions. As much as he hated to admit it, he was actually worried about her. Kripa Sharma did not ask stupid questions. There must be some reason for her doing so now.

Maybe the bump on her head fried her circuits and she can't think straight anymore. It would certainly explain a lot of things, he thought to himself.

"I'm fine," she ground out rather forcefully. She had realized by now that she wasn't going to get any straight answers from him if she beat around the bush. So, she decided to ask him straight out front, even if it did mean that she might sound like the universe's most awful, horrible, terrible mother.

"Did I or did I not give birth to Sonia Khanna?" she asked unconsciously holding her breath.

For the second time since he had met Kripa Sharma, Angad Khanna choked on air. He seemed to be doing that an awful lot lately now that he thought about it.

"Of course you gave birth to her. Who else would?"

Kripa let out the breath she had been holding and closed her eyes in mortification. It was official. She was the world's worst mother.

He watched to play of emotions on her face and everything suddenly fell into place. She wanted to know if she was Sonia's biological mother. That explained her questions about whether Sonia came from her and whether he had been married before. Although, it didn't explain why she asked if they had close female friends. What did that have to do with anything?

He was just about to ask her when there was a knock on the door and the object of their discussion walked into the room clutching three books to her chest.

Kripa's eyes opened at the knock. Standing near the door was what she hoped was her one and only daughter. She didn't think her heart could take it if she suddenly had more offsprings. Although, come to think of it, a cardiac arrest didn't seem like such a bad idea at the moment.

Meanwhile, Sonia stood at the entrance of the room and surveyed its occupants nervously, for once not completely sure of the reception that she would receive. Angad, seeing his daughter's nervousness, smiled at her and gestured her in. Sonia walked into the room a little more confidently now. She made her way to her father, surreptitiously glancing at Kripa the whole way there. She stopped when she reached him.

"Can you read me my stories now?" she asked.

Angad looked at Kripa, silently asking if it was alright for him to leave her alone now.

She nodded imperviously. The exchange went unnoticed by the child who was still waiting for her father to read her a story. Angad picked up Sonia, walked toward a chair, settled her on his lap, and opened the first book. It was Cinderella. He started to read, his low voice soothing the anxious child who wanted to talk to her mother, but was suddenly afraid to.

Kripa was hit with the strongest sense of deja vu. She felt as if she had seen this exact scene before in her life. A spark of delight lighted in her when she realized that she was regaining some of her memories.

With a small smile at the domestic picture that the father and daughter made, she sat in one of the vacant chairs in the room and watched.

I know this is kind of short but this is all i had time for. I am going to the mall with some friends so i wrote this part quickly before Samia bites my head off!!😆...jk🤗.....
