One hour and three fairy tales later, Sonia Khanna bounded off her father's lap and on to the floor. Angad stood up soon after, smiling at the pleasure on his daughter's face. Both father and daughter then turned around.
The sight that greeted them was unexpected, to say the least. Kripa had also stood up and was now somewhat nervously picking at invisible flecks of lint on her bath robe. Both Angad and Sonia had both thought that she had left long ago. And this was indeed what Kripa had originally planned to do. And yet, she had been unable to pull herself away from the adorable picture that the two made. So, against her better judgment, she had stayed, watched, and listened.
Now that it was over, Kripa was cursing herself for her impulsive decision. She had no idea what to do now that story time was done. She hadn't planned to stay this long. She figured that she would quietly slip away near the end of the third story, but she had lost track of time and ended up staying.
Meanwhile, Angad and Sonia were staring at Kripa wondering the same thing that she was asking herself. What was she doing here?
Kripa snapped out of the silence before the others did. Always the decisive one, she told herself that once again silence wouldn't give her the answers she was seeking. So, she did the next best thing. She smiled down at Sonia and spoke, albeit a little hesitantly, "Hello."
"Hello," the child murmured back, the same reverence from breakfast back in her gaze. Kripa felt a little bit more confident when she saw this. "This place is pretty big, but I guess you already know that," she began.
Sonia smiled. Angad, meanwhile, just looked back and forth between his daughter and her "mother," contemplating what Kripa was getting at.
"I was wondering if you'd show me around," Kripa said.
Sonia's smile widened, if that were possible. Here was the perfect opportunity to spend more time with her mother. She nodded eagerly and walked to Kripa, who was now smiling as well.
Angad stood behind Sonia, trying the squelch the urge to pull his daughter back. He knew that it would look strange if he did. After all, what father wouldn't allow his child to spend time with her mother? Even so, he didn't want his daughter going off alone with anyone even if that someone was her "mother." It had always been just the two of them. He wasn't prepared to let that go, especially when the person his daughter was leaving with was Kripa Sharma. The brown-eyed girl and him hadn't exactly had the best of relationships in the past fey years and he wasn't ready to let his daughter go off with someone who had spent the better part of her life trying to beat him to oblivion and vice versa.
His resolve to keep up the charade wavered with every step that Sonia took. He was alright with everything that had happened so far because it had only involved him and Kripa and even when his daughter was there, he was there with her. It was either the whole "family" together or just him and Kripa. It was never just Kripa and his daughter alone. He wasn't comfortable with that just yet. After all, he had only met her again recently. How could he trust her with something as important as his daughter? For all he knew, she could suddenly regain her memory and remember everything. What stopped her from doing something to Sonia then?
Before his mind could come up with more gruesome possibilities and he dragged his daughter back before she was hurt, there was a knock on the door. All the occupants of the room turned towards that door and to the black haired man standing there.
Manan Kapoor.
He smiled at everyone in the room as if he didn't have a care in the world. The only one who smiled back was Sonia. Angad glared at him and Kripa just looked at him with a confused frown. Manan took it all in stride, never once losing his smile. Although, he did raise an eyebrow at Kripa's choice of attire.
"I'm Manan Kapoor, one of Angad's friends," he said holding out his hand towards Kripa.
"I'm," she paused here for a moment, "Kripa Khanna."
Manan Kapoor smiled even more at the evidence that Angad had followed through with his little ploy. There were moments when he had had his doubts.
"Am I interrupting anything?" he asked solicitously.
It was Sonia who answered. "I was just about to show mommy around the house."
"Well, don't let me keep you," Manan said as stepped away from the door.
Sonia grabbed Kripa's hand and pulled her out of the room. They disappeared around the corner. Manan turned to look at Angad.
"What's with the glare?" he asked mildly as he walked to the chair Kripa had been occupying and made himself comfortable.
"What did you do that for?" was Angad's answer.
"Do what?" Manan asked in return, clearly confused.
"Let Sonia go off with Kripa like that. What if she regains her memory? She could hurt Sonia."
"Angad, you know as well as I do that hell would freeze over before Kripa Sharma would voluntarily hurt a child. She's Kripa Sharma for crying out loud."
Angad fell silent. Manan smirked, knowing that he had one that round.
"So how's it going?" he asked Angad.
"It's been less than 24 hours. What do you expect?"
"Not what I just saw, that's for sure. I think I half expected to find you both dead on the floor with all the punches you'd be throwing at each other."
Angad rolled his eyes. "She doesn't remember anything remember? Besides I took the precaution of taking harmful objects away when she was unconscious."
"Then why were you afraid she'd hurt Sonia?"
"There is such a thing as using one's brain to thing of using ordinary house hold items into harmful weapons. Perhaps you've heard of it during your…oh I don't know…FIVE years of training to become a police officer."
Manan narrowed his eyes. "Maybe. I don't quite remember."
"I wouldn't put it past Kripa to know things that over half world has no clue about."
They both fell silent after this. Angad walked to his desk and seated himself behind it.
"What are you doing here anyway?" he asked Manan.
"I just wanted to see if you really did it and how things were going."
"What's the matter? Don't have a life, so you have to bug me?"
"Yep. Don't you just love weekends? Nothing to do for two whole days."
"Don't you have to go somewhere?"
"Like where?"
"Like lunch."
"Is that an invitation?"
Angad just glared at him.
"I accept."
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Kripa's eyes widened and she gasped as she surveyed the rows and rows of books in front of her. Two walls with at least ten shelves each lined with books was the central focus of the room. The carpet was the color of red wine and there were two loveseats that took up the centre of the room. They were situated so that they faced the third wall which was dominated by a large marble fireplace. It was magnificent (I'm horrible with descriptions, so please bear with me).
"This is the library," announced Sonia with a flourish that bespoke of the love she felt for the room.
Kripa tore her gaze away from the books and focused her attention on the little brunette who was still holding her hand. Her mind wandered back to the places they had visited so far. They had seen various bathrooms (Kripa was still unsure as to why), the kitchens (which were strangely empty), the gallery where the portrait of every Khanna from the sixteenth century hung (it was very creepy and Kripa decided then and there that she would never return to that room voluntarily), Sonia's bedroom, and now they were currently in the library. Kripa had to admit that besides her daughter's room, this one was the best.
"I spend loads of time here," announced Sonia.
"Do you?" murmured Kripa.
"Oh yeah. This is my favorite room. Daddy reads to me here all the time."
"Have I ever read to you here?"
"No, but that's okay. You can start now if you'd like," she replied happily as she walked to a shelf and carefully placed the three fairy tale books back where they belonged.
Kripa frowned. She had never read to her daughter before? How was that possible? She obviously had a great love for books just like her daughter if her comfort level for the room was any indicator, so why hadn't she read to Sonia?
Sonia turned around and froze when she saw Kripa's frown.
"You don't have to read to me if you don't want to," she said misinterpreting the reason for Kripa's bad mood.
Kripa's attention snapped to her daughter when she heard the concern in her voice.
"It's not that. I'd love to read to you some time," she said gently.
Sonia grinned in response. Now she had two people who would read to her.
Meanwhile, Kripa was just about to ask Sonia why she had never read to her before, but Angad appeared in the doorway before she could.
"Daddy!"
Kripa turned in time to see her daughter hurl herself into her father's arms. He scooped her up as if this was a normal occurrence, leaving her to wonder if her daughter had ever greeted her with so much enthusiasm.
"Ready for lunch?" Angad asked them both.
She nodded, while Sonia answered with a more jubilant "Yes!" Kripa turned around fully and walked to her family fully intending to go to the dining room. Angad cleared his throat. Kripa looked at him, confused.
"You might want to…um…change," he said.
Kripa glanced at herself and blushed. She had completely forgotten that she had been wearing only a bath robe and nightgown underneath.
"Um…I…uh…" she began not quite knowing what to say.
Angad took pity on her. "We'll see you in the dining room, okay?"
Kripa smiled gratefully and left to go to her room.
The rest of the day passed by uneventfully. Kripa had managed to change into a pair of jeans and a blouse that had somehow appeared on her bed after she had changed. She soon joined Manan, Angad, and Sonia for lunch. It went smoothly, most of the conversation coming from Manan and Sonia. Kripa and Angad seemed content to just listen and offer appropriate responses when required.
After lunch, Manan and Angad retreated to Angad's study to discuss business. Kripa and Sonia went to the library where they spent the rest of the afternoon reading and exploring a bit more of the house alternately. Kripa still didn't remember any of the passages that Sonia seemed to know so well, but she shrugged it off.
Probably need to spend more time here to remember, she thought to herself.
Before anyone knew it, it was dinner time. It went similarly to lunch with most of the conversation shouldered by Manan and Sonia. No one seemed to mind much.
Manan took his leave soon after. Kripa then helped Sonia get ready for bed. Even though, they had only known each other for a day, they both felt extremely comfortable with each other. They were joined by Angad a few minutes later. Both "parents" then tucked their daughter into bed and left.
Angad pulled the door to his daughter's room shut behind him. He and Kripa then walked silently to the room that Kripa had been in so far. They didn't seem to know what to say to each other. Finally Angad spied the door and heaved a sigh of relief internally. He wasn't used to being this close to Kripa for the past 5 years without the two of them arguing with each other.
They both paused in front of the door.
"Well…good night," Angad said.
Kripa looked at him in puzzlement.
"Aren't you coming?" she asked innocently.
"What do you mean?" he asked warily. Kripa asking him into her bedroom voluntarily was probably not a good sign. His fears were confirmed with her next words.
"Well, we're married. So, don't we sleep together?"
