AFAIK, there are some minor differences between CE & North South books regarding Karna's death. But it is a big misunderstanding that Karna did not fight after getting down from the chariot. This is how it happened.
Karna gets down to lift car wheel & requests Arjua to wait. But Krishna asks Ju to shoot Ka. Ka says it is adharma to shoot him when he stood on earth & Ju stood on chariot. But G mocks him counting mistakes he did. Then Ju turns angry. Ka, seeing Ju angry, shoots Brahmastra & Ju nullifies it with another. Then Ju shoots Agneyastra & Ka Varunastra. Then Ka uses a waepon that makes all directions dark & Ju uses Vayavya astra against it. Then Ka shoots another weapon & makes Gandeeva fall from Ju's hand. In the short while Ju was getting Gandeeva back, Ka tries to lift the sunk wheel. (KMG has long long fights & dialogues again here) Krishna shouts to shoot Karna & Ju shoots Anjalika - Karna dies!
This is what actually happened IIRC. During war, when Ju once was weaponless/he had to get down, Karna did not fight. I think Karna never wanted Arjuna to be blamed for his death if he had to die. So he asked Ju to wait till the chariot is lifted back. He was lifting it back probably because Ju was not getting down to fight with him & his chariot was sinking into mud which made it impossible to fight standing on it. And he fought while standing on earth probably because he would get a channce to lift the chariot if he could make Ju Gandeeva-less for sometime. It was Arjuna who fought with his enemy. But Karna was fighting with his younger brother. As Karna already REPEATEDLY told Krishna - after Shanti Prastaava - that he knew about his death & still he would be fighting till his last drop of blood, I don't think Karna cared the outcome of that war at all. So what he probably thought while lifting his chariot was not about his own life, but Arjuna's state if he had to kill Karna when he stood unarmed on earth.
