Problem is not for the meaning of word 'daana'. Problem is: in MB itself some beautiful definitions of daana is given by people like Krishna and Yudhi. It should be found whether their theory of true daana matches with Karna's daana or not. I am neither Krishna nor Yudhi to claim those theories as mine. But yes, their definitions of daana seems more logical for me than any dictionary or internet.

One thing I seriously dislike about what people propogate about Karna is his mahaan-bechara-daanveer image. I do remember once I was left almost lifeless for saying that. But, let anything come. As long as Daana is a give & take policy, I never wish to see Karna as a fool who lost something that protected his life & stood like a dumbo loser there.
Vaisampayana continued, "When the illustrious slayer of Paka refused to ask for any other boon, Kama with a smile again addressed him, saying, 'O god of gods, even before this, I had recognised thee, O Lord! O Sakra, it is not proper for me to confer on thee any unprofitable boon, for thou art the very lord of the celestials! On the contrary, being as thou art the Creator and lord of all beings, it is thou that shouldst confer boons on me! If, O god, I give thee this coat of mail and ear-rings, then I am sure to meet with destruction, and thou shalt also undergo ridicule! Therefore, O Sakra, take my earrings and excellent mail in exchange for something conferred by thee on me! Otherwise, I will not bestow them on thee!' Thereupon Sakra replied, 'Even before I had come to thee, Surya had known of my purpose and without doubt,it is he that hath unfolded everything unto thee! O Karna, be it as thou wishest! O son, except the thunder-bolt alone, tell me what it is that thou desirest to have!'"

And he deserves blame both for disagreeing to wage war and later for waging war 😆 very interesting! In Van parva, Udyoga parva he is blamed for trying to stop war... oh how dare he not want to take revenge on them who assaulted his wife? Ok fine. But then, after war, people again raise their finger to the same man. How dare he cause such a mass destruction? It's a double edged sword. He should always be blamed, because people have decided to blame him no matter what!
