Just as Veera composed herself and thought of putting an end to whatever foolishness Baldev was up to, Baldev confusedly pulled down the ghunghat and said trying to recollect his friend's words,

"Ikk minute ikk minute, lagta hain main kuch bhool raha hoon...nahi yeh hi to bataya tha Jaggi ne...chal thik hai"

("One minute, one minute. Looks like I am forgetting something...no this is what Jaggi had suggested...ok fine then")

...and then he again lifted her veil.

Veera clenched her fists in irritation and exclaimed

"Yeh ki kar raha Baldev..." ("What are you doing Baldev...")

Before she could finish her sentence she was cut short by Baldev's irritated voice.

"Oye Chup kar na...hamesha chappar chappar rarti rehti hain...mainu karne de...ek to main sab kuch bhool raha hoon...uske upar se tu nakhre na dikha...imprission banana hain na mainu...aur kehte hain na first imprission is lovely imprission..."

("Shut up. Always you keep on blabbering. Let me do it. As it is I am forgetting everything...don't be finicky...I have to make an impression...and it is said that first impression is lovely impression...")

"Huh.." was all Veera could reply as Baldev nervously patted his cheeks with his hands and nodded his head vigorously...

"Thand rakh kake...tennu impression jama na hain kudi ke samne... iske baad kya bola tha Jaggi ne...hmmm...haan yaad a gaya...pehle ghunghat uthayo phir ankhon main ankhon dalo"

("Calm down. You have to make an impression in front of the girl. So what did Jaggi say next...hmmm...yep I remembered...first lift the veil then look into her eyes")

and with a victorious smile he looked at an utterly confused Veera ready to embark on the second step of this strenuous task.

Veera stood up in anger and threw the dupatta on the floor... "Yeh ki bakwaas kiye ja raha hain Baldev?" ("What crap are you saying Baldev?")

Baldev sat on the bench utterly confused where he went wrong. Did he mess up any of the steps that Jaggi had mentioned? He scratched his head going through the steps all over again in his head. No he had perfectly followed Jaggi's directions...he had memorized them umpteenth time even while walking towards the fields...it was only the 12^th step where he was a bit confused...first step was lifting her veil and then second step was looking into her eyes and then third step was holding her hands and drawing her nearer and so on...then why was Veera upset? Oh Jaggi had mentioned to switch off the lights... but that was after the holding hands...right...puzzled he looked at Veera and requested her in a low voice,

"Veera...main bhi to koshish kar raha hoon na...mere liye to pehle baar hai na...thoda to galti maaf karde..."

("Veera...I am trying my best...this is the first time for me...please pardon my mistakes")

"Mainu yahan tension ho rahi hai ki itni kam samay main kaise karenge sab ke samne aur tennu ab ankhon main ankhen dalke romance sujh raha hai", Veera retorted back.

("Here I am tensed how we will perform in such a short span of time in front of everyone and you are interested in looking into my eyes and romancing")

She turned around and crossed her arms angrily trying to suppress the gusts of rage that was slowly building up inside her at his irresponsible behavior.

Baldev sat on the bench perplexed clueless about her behavior. Wait a second. Was she saying that they had to do it in front of everyone? OMG he knew his Sherni had been exposed to city culture and had a very modern outlook but do they make out in front of everybody in the city? How disgusting? This is why he had never liked the city culture much. His face flushed at the thought and he nodded his head silently in disagreement...he had to make her understand that this is not possible.

"Nahi nahi oye nahi... Veera yeh na pind hain...sada sheher nahi...yaha na yeh sab sabke samne nahi karte" he said approaching her trying to make her understand.

("No no...Veera this is village...not your city...here you cannot do all this in front of everyone")

This was the final nail on the coffin. Veera turned around and snapped her fingers in front of him and retorted "Baldev mainu gussa na dila...natak sabke samne nahi karenge to kya akele main karenge...aur is main pind ki baat kahan se a gayi? Aur yeh ki tab se steps bole ja raha hai"

("Baldev don't annoy me. Drama is performed in front of everyone not when we are alone. And how does pind come in between all this?")

She took two steps towards him and looked at him with an enquiring glance with her hands on her waist.

Baldev recoiled back a little. He could see the anger and irritation in her eyes and d after all when a Sherni is angry even Sher can be afraid of her. He composed himself and when the realization of her words finally dawned on him, he looked at her confusedly and said, " Ki??? Natak ?? kaheka natak? Tennu yeh sab natak lagta hai. Veera main na tennu kabhi samajh nahi pata".

("What? Drama? What drama? All this seems a drama to you? Veera sometimes I can hardly understand you")

Veera turned around and picked up the scripts and held them in front of him.

"Script main likha hain kaisa natak. Baldev kabhi to serious ho ja...kal Beeji ke jalse wich jo natak pesh karna hai uska practice nahi karna hain tennu to thik hain par mera time waste to na kar... tu na mere se baat mat kar..mujhe bohut gussa a raha hain tere upar...tujhe parwa hi nahi hain meri"

("Here is written in the script about the drama. Baldev sometimes you should get serious. If you didn't want to practice for the skit for Beeji's party, it is ok...but why are you wasting my time? Don't talk in front of me. I am very angry with you. You don't care for me")

Just then they heard a loud thud and the cottage door opened with a bang and Ranvi and Gunjan walked in partially drenched from the heavy downpour outside with half open umbrella in their hands.

Shocked at the scene in front of their eyes, Gunjan said looking towards an utterly perplexed Baldev "Veerji, aap kab aye ithe? Main to aap ko bulane vaste ghar gayi thi...mennu ki pata tha aap pehle hi yahan a gaye honge. Aur aap logon ne natak ka rehearsal shuru kar diya humare begair?? Or e ki hain yeh dupatta zameen pe ki kar raha hai?"

("Brother, you are here? And I had gone to you call you. How would I know that you would already be here? And you both have already started rehearsing for the play.")

Veera walked towards Gunjan and said helplessly,"Dekhiye na Gunjan Bhabhi...pata nahi is bewakoof ka dimang ka screw kahan gir gaya hai...kaisi behki behki baatein kar raha hain...mainu itni tension ho rahi hain ki kal sabke samne hum natak paise pesh karenge aur yeh hain ki tab se bakwaas kiye ja raha hain".

(" See Gunjan Bhabhi, this fool has lost the screw of his brains...he is talking such nonsense...I am so much tensed how we will perform in front of everybody and he is hell bent on irritating me")

Gunjan looked back at a profusely sweating Baldev and exclaimed "Aur Veerji aap itna pashina pashina kyun ho rahe ho...bahar to itni baarish ho rahi hai...mainu to thand lag rahi hain...aur aapko itna pashina a raha hain? Aap ki tabiyat to thik hain?"

(" Why are you sweating so much? It is raining so much outside that I am feeling cold and you are sweating so much. Are you feeling unwell?")

A flustered Baldev gulped down his nervousness and took out his handkerchief to wipe off the tiny drops of sweat on his face. He had been sweating since the time he entered this cottage due to nervousness and it was not until Gunjan had pointed out that he had realized it himself. He kept staring blankly at the three pairs of eyes which were fixed on him. One of them raging with anger ready to reduce him to ashes if that was possible and the other two pairs bombarding him with countless implicit questions. He lowered his eyes and gulped down another knot of nervousness and embarrassment trying to think of something to save the situation in front of his would in-laws. How could be make them understand how much tensed he was? How he had been spending sleepless nights for the last few days thinking what to do and what not to do on his first night? And here when he thought Veera was equally tensed and was eager to practice before the actual event, all his confusions doubled up when he realized that Veera was actually tensed about some foolish skit. And to top it all he had made a fool of himself in front of everyone...how embarrassing it would be if his would be brother-in-law and sister came to know that he had come here to practice for his...NO NO for the first time in his life he felt he was at a loss of words. He needed to calm his mind and for that he needed to leave this embarrassing situation as soon as possible.

"Haan woh mainu kuch thik nahi lag raha hai...thoda taazi hawa khake ata hoon. Main chalta hoon tum log chalu rakho..."

("Yes I am not feeling well...need to get some fresh air. I am leaving, you people continue")

Veera looked with a confused face at him. This guy was perfectly fine a few minutes before eager in romancing her and now he said he was not feeling well. He should have stood beside her and comforted her and helped her with the skit. But all he was concerned was in romance. After all romance could be done later. By God, she needed to tighten her reins on him post marriage. She gave a resolved look at his retreating figure before getting occupied with the actual purpose of the meeting with her Veerji and Gunjan Bhabhi.

Meanwhile Baldev sat at his favorite tea shop sipping another glass of hot tea trying to forget the disaster which he had faced a few moments before. Jaggi and Billa were passing by and as soon as they saw their favorite praaji sipping they quickly rushed to him to enquire about the result of his rendezvous.

"Praaji aap itthe ki kar rahe ho? Practice khatam hogaya kya? Aap to badi fast nikle Praaji" Jaggi exclaimed and began passing him teasing smiles with Billa in unison.

("Brother, what are you doing here? Finished practicing? You turned out to be very fast")

" Oye tum dono aap na bakwaas band karo. Ek to mera lassi ban gaya sabke samne...aur upar se Veera bhi gussa ho gayi".

("Stop blabbering you two. All my plans flopped and to top it all Veera is angry with me")

"Yeh ki keh raho ho praaji...aap ne steps main galti kar di kya? Pukka who 12^th step pe hi gadbaddi ki hogi tabhi parjaiji gussa ho gayi"

("What are you saying? Did you mess up with the steps? You would have messed up the 12^th step for sure that's why sister-in-law is upset with you")

Baldev narrated them how Veera had actually called him for a practice of the skit she was planning for the Beeji the next day.

"Aab main ki kara? Mainu to samajh main nahi a raha hai ki kaise apne pareshaani ko bhagayo...aur ab to Veera bhi gussa ho gayi hain...ab to thik se nahi kiya to woh zindagi bhar mujhse naraz rahegi"

("What shall I do now? I am clueless how I will find the solution to this. And to top it Veera is angry with me...if I don't do it properly then she will be angry with me for whole life")

"O Praaji, aap na tension na lo...aap na koi picture main dekh lo...aap ko sab acche se yaad rahega" Jaggi suggested.

("Don't worry brother. You watch a movie. You will remember everything vividly")

"Par Praaji picture main kaise dekhenge" Billa interrupted thoughtfully, "...wahan to bas yehi dikhate hai ki dulhan dhood pakrati hain dulhe ko, phir dulha dulhan ki ghoonghat uthate hai aur batti bujhate hain aur phir subah ho jati hain...itna to praaji ko ata hi hain".

("But how will learn from a movie. It is just shown in the movies that the bride gives a glass of milk to the groom and then the groom lifts her veil and then switches off the lights and then it is morning...he already knows this much")

"Oye chup karo tum dono. Mainu kuch sochne do...Sher hoon main itni jaldi haar nahi manunga...kisi na kisi tarah to mainu pata karna hi padega"

(" Stop blabbering. Let me think. I am a lion after all I won't lose hope so soon...I need to know somehow")

"Praaji aap apne jeeja ji se kyun nahi pooch lete...woh to shaadi shuda hain...woh pukka aapki madat karega" Billa suggested enthusiastically.

("Brother why don't you ask your brother-in-law? He is married...he will surely help you out")

"Oye bewakoof, Veera behen hain uski...main usse kaise pooch sakta hoon uske behen ke saath kya karna hai? Baat karta hai"

("You fool. Veera is his sister...how can I ask what I should do with his sister.")

Baldev sat sulking thinking whom to approach to seek advice. After all he could not discuss all this with his father and none of his friends were married to give him first-hand information. And it was impossible to ask Ranvi. What if he asked him indirectly? But he did not share such good terms with him that he could converse on such topics. But he needed to find a way out...and needed to find it really fast...as his wedding was fast approaching. Wedding. Something inside him rang a bell at the word and he began feeling strange sensations in his stomach as if all his internal organs were churning up inside just like clothes inside a washing machine. He nervously placed a hand over his mouth trying to compose himself.

And as if turning his fears into reality he looked up and saw Ranvi approaching them. Ranvi had come to call Baldev for the skit rehearsal on Veera's insistence as Veera had decided not to call him until the wedding to teach him a lesson for his irresponsible behavior towards her.
