Part 9
A week had gone by since Ranvi and Gunjan started going to the school/continuing education center to complete their schooling that they had missed out on as kids. Ratan, chaiji, and Veera were very happy and so were Baldev and Balwant. Bansuri was the only one not very happy, because this would mean that Baldev would be the only one without much of an education.
Veera had thought that Baldev would also join Ranvi and Gunjan in completing his studies, but till now he had not shown any interest. Finally, Veera couldn't take it anymore and had to ask Baldev one morning when they were at his house.
Veera: "Baldev, ik baat poochoon? Tu bura toh nahin manega na?"
("Baldev, can I ask you something? You won't feel bad will you?")
Baldev didn't know why Veera was asking him such a question.
Baldev: "Haan, Veera bol. Tennu mujhse ki kehna hai?"
("Yes Veera tell me. What is it that you want to say?")
Veera: "Gunjan bhabhi aur veerji ab apni padhai poori kar rahe hai. Tu apni padhai poori nahin karna chahta?"
("Gunjan bhabhi and veerji are now completing their studies. Don't you want to complete your studies as well?")
Baldev laughed.
Baldev: "Tu paagal ho gayi hai ki? Yeh koi umar hai padhai karne? Ranvi aur Gunjan ke liye theekh hai, lekin mainu inn sab cheezo ke liye waqt nahin hai. Mainu apne sarpanch banne ke sapne ke liye kaam karne hai."
("Are you mad? Is this the age to study? Its okay for Ranvi and Gunjan, but I don't have time for such things. I have work that I need to complete in order to become sarpanch.")
Veera realized that Baldev was not going to agree that easily. She thought of various ways she could convince him, and that's when she came up with an idea. She began to smile. Veera knew that Baldev never said no to a challenge.
Veera: "Main tujhe ek challenge deti hoon. Mainu lagda hai ki veerji aur Gunjan bhabhi padhai mein tujhse zyada accha karenge. Agar tujhe lagta hai ki tu unse behtar kar sakta hai, phir tujhe yeh challenge karni hogi."
("I challenge you Baldev. I think my brother and sister in law will do better than you in their studies. If you think that you can do better than them, then you will have to accept my challenge.")
Baldev grinned. He could never step away from a challenge.
Baldev: "Theek hai! Mainu teri shart manzoor hai. Lekin agar mein jeet gaya toh main tujhse jo bhi kahunga, tujhe karna hoga."
("Alright! I accept your challenge. But, if I win, then whatever I ask you for, you will have to do it.")
Veera smiled.
Veera: "Theek hai. Shart manzoor! Dekhthe hai kaun jeet ta hai."
(Ok, agreed! Lets see who will win this bet.")
Veera and Baldev shook hands to confirm that they had both agreed to the challenge.
Baldev (as an afterthought grinned): "Ek aur baat. Tujhe mainu padhai mein madad karni hogi. Tu meri woh kya kehte hai shehri log, tutor, banegi."
("One more thing. You will have to be my tutor and help me with my studies.")
Veera smiled. She was happy to be Baldev's tutor, since this would mean that she would be spending more time with him. Baldev was also thinking the same.
Veera: "Haan, theekh hai. Main teri tutor banungi."
("Okay, I will be your tutor.")
When Bansuri heard the news, she was very happy that her dearest son was going to be completing his studies as well.
Bansuri: "Puttar, mein tere liye itni khush hoon."
("Son, I'm so happy for you.")
Baldev: "Beeji, yeh sab Veera ki vajah se ho raha hai."
("Mother, this is happening all because of Veera.")
When Bansuri heard Baldev take Veera's name, although she was happy that her son would finally be completing his studies, she rolled her eyes and gave a look of disgust on hearing Veera's name.
Balwant: "Baldev puttar, aaj tune apne papaji ka sir bahut uncha kar ditta."
("Baldev, my son, today you have made your father proud.")
Baldev gave a surprised smile. He couldn't believe that finally his father was praising him for a change.
Baldev (thinking to himself): "Ab main uss Ranvi nu dikhaunga! Main usse saabit karunga ki main Veera ke layak hoon. Aur Ranvi khud Veera ki shaadi mujhse karvaiga."
("Now, I will show Ranvi! I will prove it to him that I am the one for Veera. And Ranvi will himself get Veera to marry me.")
On the first night of tutoring, Baldev who had been going to the special school for a few days now, realized the awkwardness he was facing with Veera who was now his tutor. Now, Veera was also feeling awkward. Awkward because now Baldev and Veera would be in close proximity to each other, and spending a lot of time together.
Baldev was looking handsome, with his stubble, and wearing a nice red kurta with jeans. He also had on nice cologne. All of this was really causing Veera a hard time in concentrating teaching Baldev.
Veera (thinking to himself): "Yeh Baldev itna hot kyun dikh raha hai? Agar aise hi chalta raha, toh bahut jald main apne aap ko control nahin kar paungi."
("Why is Baldev looking so hot? If this continues, then very soon, I will not be able to control myself.")
Baldev had similar thoughts going through his mind.
Baldev (thinking to himself): "Agar Veera aise hi mujhe padhati rahegi, toh mainu apne aap ko sambhalna mushkil hoga. Itni sohni lag rahi hai."
("If Veera continues to tutor me like this, then I will find it hard to control myself around her. She is looking so beautiful.")
At first, both Veera and Baldev sat away from each other, with Veera helping Baldev from a distance.
But, when Veera went to look over Baldev's work, and saw some mistakes that she wanted to help correct, Veera's hand grazed against Baldev's when she bent down to correct the errors he had made.
Veera couldn't help but be pulled towards Baldev, whose face was only inches away from hers, and he his cologne wasn't making things easier.
For Baldev as well, Veera's perfume and shampoo that she had used was distracting him. Without realizing, Baldev and Veera turned to look at each other, moving closer, and closer until they heard the sound of Baldev's phone ringing which broke their moment.
Both Baldev and Veera unknowingly gave a huge sigh of relief. Thanks to Baldev's phone, Veera and Baldev did not get carried away in the moment.
Baldev picked up the phone. It was Gunjan.
Baldev: "Haan Gunjan bol. Ki hoya?"
("Yes, Gunjan tell me. What happened?")
Gunjan (smiling): "Veerji, aap ki vajah se Ranvi apni padhai poori kar sakta hai. Voh class mein man lagage padh raha hai, aur accha kar raha hai. Shayad aap se bhi zyada. Agar aapne mainu paise nahin diye hote, toh yeh sab nahin ho sakta tha."
("Brother, because of you today Ranvi is able to continue his studies, and complete it. He is working really hard and doing well in his studies so far. Maybe even better than you. If you hadn't given me money to help Ranvi, then none of this would have been possible.")
Baldev: "Oh tera Veer akhir teri madad hi toh karega. Main apni behen nu khush dekhna chahta hoon."
("After all, as your brother, I will help you. I want to see my sister happy.")
Veera smiled, hearing Baldev's caring words towards his sister, Gunjan.
When Gunjan put the phone down, she was about to go leave the room when her face fell upon seeing the person at the door who had heard her whole conversation. It was Ranvi.
Ranvi looked very upset and betrayed.
Gunjan: "Ranvi, voh main..."
("Ranvi, the thing is...")
Ranvi shook his head in anger, upset at what he had just heard, and left from there.
