Chapter 7

She was not sure whether she should be going for dinner or not. On one hand she did not wanted to disappoint her Gauri Massi but on the other hand she did not want to face Raghav again. His house was the last place she ever wanted to go after that dreadful night. But she never broke any of her promises because she knew how much they affected the people if broken. She got ready surrounded by the thought of what this night had stored in for her. She calmed herself saying she had already faced the worst and nothing can be worse than it. She dressed very casually in a simple suit like before as she was not going there to impress anyone. She was on her way to Singhania house when she stopped her car and got down to collect Massi's favourite sweet. She remembered how much she used to like it when she was staying at chawl with them.

Gauri had finished cooking all the favourite dishes of Kalpi and Raghav. She had intentionally called her for dinner so that those two can meet each other and realise that how incomplete they are without each other. She held herself responsible for whatever her kids were facing at the moment and as a mother it was her duty to get her kids back on the right track. As soon as she was done laying the dinner table she called up Raghav and requested him to come home early tonight. She did not reveal him anything about Kalpi as she wanted him to be surprised. He first tried to make excuses regarding the work load but finally had to give in when Gauri scolded him for being negligent towards her.

Kalpi had been standing outside the door for last 5 minutes still trying to compose her for tonight. She was not ready for this but was still doing it for the sake of a lady who was nearly as dear to her as her family. Gathering courage she pressed the bell hoping Raghav would not open it. She was lucky as Gauri opened the door and invited her inside. She was relieved not to find Raghav around and hoped that he does not come home tonight. Finally I have a company to eat tonight. Eating alone is always so boring' Gauri said as she microwaved the food. Kalpi was taken aback by her statement and looked at her with questioning eyes. I have to take my medicine regularly and Raghav is never home before 2am' she replied as if reading her mind. She was surprised there was no mention of Pakhi nor she could see Pakhi in any of the pictures that were hanging in the living room. She wanted to enquire about Pakhi but then kept quiet thinking herself as an outsider intruding in someone's personal life. But Gauri was determined to make Kalpi realise the truth tonight. Slowly and steadily she threw bombs of reality of their life on her throughout the night.

Gauri was surprised to figure out that Kalpi still remembered her love for Kaju barfi. She patted slightly on her head and asked her to fetch a plate for sweets from inside. She was again taken aback when she found someone's hands trying to cover her eyes and the sweet fragrance of orchids all around her. Raghav wanted to surprise her mother and therefore picked her favourite flowers and sweet for tonight. But, was stunned to see her mother already holding a box of her favourite sweet in her hands. This is not fair Mom. Who got these to you before me' Raghav asked putting up a slight disappointment of his face. Before Gauri could answer him Kalpi came out of the kitchen with a plate. He was totally shaken to find her at his place. Finally, she was here but all this was like a dream for him. He stood there with his mouth wide open trying to gulp down the reality.

Kalpi felt guilty for ruining a mother son moment and looked apologetic. Gauri tried to diffuse the awkwardness between them. She narrated how she met Kalpi in the orphanage and invited her over for dinner. He listened to Gauri and kept eating without responding much. He was not sure of what to say soo preferred to stay quite. Kalpi was also tongue-tied which made Gauri the only one speaking among them. Gauri further questioned Kalpi about her reason to visit Mumbai and was surprised to know about the partnership between their companies. She had now realised what was the reason for this change in Raghav. His son had finally decided to pursue his love and she wanted to him out in this as much as she can.

Raghav after finishing his dinner took the box of sweet in his hand and landed on the couch in front of the TV. The two most important ladies in his life were still sitting on the dinner table discussing about the orphanage and the kids. It was Raghav's dream to build KALPANA orphanage. It is for the love of his life that he lost because of me' Gauri finally said to Kalpi. She was trying to disgest what Gauri just said when Raghav intervened and tried changing the topic. She needs to know the truth Raghav' Gauri retorted and started explaining Kalpi about her involvement in Raghav's sudden stubbornness for revenge. Kalpi was dreading this conversation to occur and hence midway stood up and tried to leave the place as soon as possible. Raghav followed her calling her name but she did not stop.

He caught her arm and spun her around so that they can face each other. He could see she had a lot of contradicting thoughts in her eyes- for a fraction of second her eyes drowning into his and in the other fraction he could see the rage in her eyes. He tried to move a bit away from her so that she does not feel uncomfortable but continued holding her hand. He was guilty and she could read his eyes which were apologising to hers. Her heart was melting but her mind was reminding her of the night where this same guy had left her at the altar and married Pakhi. She tried to free herself but his hold was strong for her.

Please let me speak tonight. I do not know if I will ever get another chance to apologise to you. I know sorry is a very small word to say after whatever I did with you. But trust me even you would have valued your aai over me if you had to choose one among us. I know marrying Pakhi was the worst decision I had ever made and I have regretted it every second of my life. I swear if you would have stayed back I was ready to amend everything. I divorced Pakhi so that she can start a new life.' He said and was trying to look for words to continue further when suddenly she screamed at the top of her voice.

Please Mr. Singhania. Leave me. I am a nobody to you. You do not have to give me any explanations. Whether you divorce your wife or live with her happily is least of my concerns. We are just related to each other professionally and there is nothing beyond that between us. It would be good if you behave yourself in front of me the next time or I would have to take strict actions against you.' She said looking at teary helpless guy standing in front of her and drove off.
