Chapter 6: Choices

A sleepless Ragav lay in bed watching Kalpi sleep. Filled with emotion he thinks to himself "She looks so peaceful." He berates himself for having taken advantage of her... of her love... of her trust. He has no illusions, he knows he is a selfish bas***d. He just never thought that... He couldn't complete this thought process. It was too painful.

He gets out of bed and goes to the terrace. He needs to think. He is at war with himself, on one side he has his parents and a strong desire to avenge them; and on the other side he has his Kalpi, his life. It is a battle between the past and the future. Overwhelmed with emotions spiralling out of control he drops himself onto the terrace floor.

Kalpi wakes up to an empty bed, wondering where Ragav is and goes looking for him. She finds him sitting on the terrace floor. His elbows on his lap, holding his head between his hands; as if trying to hold the weight of the world. She walks up to him and gently envelopes him with a back hug. He sighs and thinks "His Kalpi".

He turns to face her and looks into her eyes, eyes filled with love and concern... eyes asking the questions she wasn't voicing. Until that moment, he never realised how mature she was for her age... how well she understood him. She was right here by his side and at the same time giving him his space.

With anguish in his heart he softly says "Kalpi, I have a question to ask you." Kalpi smiles reassuringly and says "Ask away."

He asks "If you have to choose between your aai and..." She interrupts him, not waiting to let him complete his question and answers smilingly "Always aai." Her words brought him such relief, that until that moment he had not realised how important her answer was.

He pulls her towards him and crushes her in a tight hug. He moves away slightly and gently caresses her face with both his hands. He kisses a forehead... a goodbye kiss he thinks to himself.

With the desire to hold her one last time so strong he carries her to bed. She lay in his arms drifting towards sleep as he lay awake holding her, savouring every moment for he knew he would never hold her again.

Morning saw Ragav crouched on the sitting room floor picking the shards of broken glass. Kalpi walks out of the bedroom sees him and smiles to herself, her gaze filled with so much love for him. He loudly hisses "Awww..." and sucks his right index finger. Kalpi rushes over as she call out in concern "Are you okay?" She crouches in front of him, holds out his hand to see what has happened. She notices that he has cut himself and is bleeding.

Ragav seeing the concern in her eyes and hearing it in her voice, smiles reassuringly and says "I am okay." Once reassured she begins to pick up the remaining shards of glass.

Ragav panics and holds her hand to stop her and says "What are you doing? You can get hurt." Realisation hits him then and there that he could never bear to see her hurt.

He looks into her eyes his decision made and without any hesitation he fills her maang with his blood.
