BREAKING: Anurag Kashyap on flop films and box-office: "Films don't recover..."

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap recently had a release in the form of Nishaanchi in theaters, and as one would expect usually from a Kashyap film, it has managed to be amongst his more liked works in recent times considering he disappointed many in the form of Dobaaraa and Almost Pyaar with DJ Mohabbat, and to others, it hasn't been that appealing over all. However, Nishaanchi did receive a decent buzz and fairly good reviews. You can read our review here.

However, the filmmaker is also no stranger to underwhelming box-office returns with his movies and mostly and usually has a straight-forward take to things. In one of our exclusive conversations with the filmmaker, we asked him about how a film's release is just a release and it never usually transpires into or confirms a decent box-office run, and to this, Kashyap had an interesting take to share indeed.

We asked,

Q. A release is a release. It’s not necessarily going to lead to big box office numbers and everything, right? But what do you do then? Hope? I mean, of course, the basic hope is always there.

I’m not here to break the box office records of Pushpa or Animal or whichever is the next big hit. That’s not why I’m making films

To this, Anurag answered, "Well, I work backwards. Our films don’t cost as much as other people’s films cost. We work backwards, so there are that many modes of recovery. A film also recovers its money over a period of time. Otherwise, as a filmmaker, I don’t exist today."

He also said, "I’m very clear that I want to make cinema I believe in. Honestly, I want to support cinema that I love and believe in. Money recovery will happen over a period of time. I’m not here to break the box office records of Pushpa or Animal or whichever is the next big hit. That’s not why I’m making films."

He further added, "But I’m also very conscious that I don’t want my producer to ever lose money. The truth is, all those things eventually go away from within you. Because at the end of the day, the film has to work. If it works, it works. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t."

He also cited an example as he concluded saying, "A very recent example is that the whole world felt War 2 would work. And there wasn’t much focus on Saiyaara. But Saiyaara went three or four times further, while the other one didn’t work. Now, who could have predicted that? No one. Things just happen. You honestly do something, and things happen."

It is indeed quite an interesting and fair take that Kashyap has towards the kind of films he wants to make and being prepared for his films not working at the box-office or doing wonders as one would expect otherwise.

Nevetheless, it is a bit sad to see that Kashyap's latest release, Nishaanchi has been a total washout at the box-office. According to reports, the film opened with Rs 25 lakh, saw a slight increase to Rs 39 lakh on Saturday, but earnings fell to Rs 26 lakh on Sunday and Rs 13 lakh on Monday. The film’s total collection currently stands at Rs 1.03 crore and sees no signs of any recovery in the coming days. This is Kashyap's second-lowest grossing film as of now, where his film, Almost Pyaar With DJ Mohabbat barely grossed Rs 25 lakhs in its lifetime. Nishaanchi's box-office is also severely impacted by the better-performing franchise film, Jolly LLB 3, where the latter grossed 53 crores at the box-office over the weekend.
