EHT and reality- Why I had hope from this show

I watch news avidly.

Today only there was a case of a juvenile kidnapping and murdering a 6 year old and demanding ransom so that he could get money to buy an I phone.

Few weeks ago Vindoo Dara Singh was asked to speak on betting scandal and shamelessly said on national television, "It's my money! I can do whatever with it!"

He was unapologetic on betting.

There's this politician Bibi Jagir Kaur who was involved in honour killing of her own daughter and SIL. The case is forgotten. She is still winning elections.

There's many more examples of such scandals and manipulations of rich and famous that go unpunished. A superstar who's done everything from abusing women to killing endangered animals to running over people under his car in drunk driving to links with underworld - is still free, witnesses died, but he is ruling power lists and breaking Box office records.

I had thought EHT would make comment on society, its hypocrisy, the origin of unholy nexus between power players. It would show how ordinary people get fooled by glitz and glamour. How justice is possible if ordinary people unite.

But sadly it failed. It remained limited to squabbles, stupid romantic flashbacks and now wrought with loopholes.

Its original episodes, theme and cast had intrigued me. In vain and endless hope I kept watching for quality but...

Some complain about negativity in the show. Sorry but it's about reality and facts. Not negativity and positivity.

It was fascinating how people who had it all were acting so deviant. It made me curious to know why they were the way they were. It was curious to see how machinations of one group were making other group lose innocence as well. I expected a far detailed exploration in past, present and mindset of all characters than what we got.

The unfulfilled potential of EHT is going to nag me for a long time. Not fair.

Everyday one reads of sch horrific crimes in India, perpetrated very often by people in power. Most get away with no consequences. Why is it that in Indai, we call ourselves a moral society getting worked upset and hurt by someone writing a book on Hinduism, the army being criticised in Haider, the immorality of boys and girls talking to each other, yet it does not matter when people cheat and murder for money?

What has happened to the justice system in the country? Jayalalitha can make millions, trillions and she can get bail? It too 10 years for Jessica Lal's murderer to be brought ot jsutice,, that too after such a long campaign? Poltiicians can be murderers yt they can fight for elections and people will elect them. The whole state of Denmark is rotten- so where does one begin to clean it?

Well, a country which worships Durga Maa in her many forms across the country, can hit/ rape, starve its daughters, wives and sisters without a second thought to the hypocricy of theri actions,w hat can one expect.

We can do arti in the Ganga maiyya and yet empty a city's effluents and industrial effluents and pollute the whole river while continuing to worship it.

We can worship Gandhiji and yet feel not even the smallest need to follow even the tiniest thing he has said.

never have I seen any case come to a proper end with justice being done to victims.

I too watched the serial in the hope that if not in life, one could see justice being done somewhere.

Given the state of things i real life,, i guess we both expected too much.

So what do you expect media in such a country to be? It will only reflect what is going on.

Cases did come to justice as in Jessica Lall and Mattoo rape case. Same for Delhi gangrape too.

So it is not like India has no justice at all.

Some cases led to new laws as in Vishakha guidelines on sexual harassment. Passing of RTI Act, Whistleblowers' protection act etc.

I had wanted EHT to show possibility in legal and fair measures. Plus an exploration into origins and cause of deviance. That mini series Gumrah does it very well.

But EHT ended up a joke.

Romance is never supposed to hog a thriller. Kahaani, Mardaani etc have heroines with family life and romantic hints but it's just on wayside, and often platonic. It doesn't drag or hog whole film.

Here focus on Dev D's confusion and deewangi murdered the show. Killed potential of both heroine and villains. We got no insight into their past, their gradual metamorphosis into what they are now.

We will not get it either.

It's just going to end as a huge April Fools Day joke.

I keep myself connected to political news as far as possible. Sadly, EHT not only failed portraying the real picture properly but will now also fail to show that its the truth that always prevails. It only gave wrong information to people living outside India about the culture of our nation and the judicial procedures applied here. The show offers neither truth nor knowledge.

Yes Japonica Jessica Lal case took too much time but it was the case where for the first time stern action was taken against who changed their statement in the court.The case burst the bubble of hypocrisy and questioned the credibility of the Indian judicial system openly. Finally justice was delivered in this case

Priyadarshini Mattoo's case was an eye opener. Due to this case stalking now a legal offense.

Btw we have fast track courts these days and cases don't run for years now.

Problem with media is that they sensationalize all the bad things but hardly pay attention to the good things happening around us. They are not really keen in showing the cases that are solved. There are thousands of cases where the victim actually gets justice.

There was a debate in a news channel when the nation was fighting swine flu. A govt doctor commented that its the media which creates the fear in the minds of the people. According to the statistics thousands were saved from the dangerous virus but media paid attention to those who died because of it.

I think India is suffering communication gap between the citizens and the Govt machinery. Most of us and yes even the literate ones don't know about their basic right and duties. Can you believe people think the other seats of a bus are reserved for men because the rest of them are reserved for women and handicaps?

Can you believe I had an argument over it today ?

Well put Anu.

It takes special kind of guts to take up the challenge to stand up to the corruption of the rich and famous.

The producers don't have clean hands themselves and therefore will not upset the boat

to show that people that are rich and powerful and their abuse of power.

One has to have a clean and clear conscious to go after what is right and have the conviction that by using their power to reach and send a useful message to change the

corrupt method used by unconscionable people.

The producers have the perfect tool in T V to use the medium and change the way many think but they too are content in the status quo because they need these same people to finance their projects.

So the vicious cycle keeps on spinning and we are back to square one.

But as the saying goes ...Hope Springs Eternal so maybe there will be someone in the future that will try to change this corrupt way of the rich and famous.

Agree with you.
You have mentioned about that superstar. You know that superstar has a very good relation with our current primeminister so he won't get punishment.
So all the rich people have money power as well as political contacts so they are far away from law punishment.
Same case was in EHT. Goenka's have a support of minister Basu.
I also wanted to see the justice in this show which is impossible to see in real life when rich and famous people are involved in case.
But they have made it a Saas bahu show.

That Prime Minister himself has taint of riots on him. And then opposition as well! 1984 riots had not a single person convicted! 😡

When I heard it was inspired by Revenge and watched that show and read about it, I expected even more from it!

The characters of that show also talk to themselves but they are very thoughtful inner reflections. Not inane mujhe kuch karna hoga!🤢

Victoria talks about her background, abuse and all influences that made her this way, her loveless marriage and relation with Conrad etc. I doubt if we will ever get such stuff from Sakshi!

Lydia turns tables on Graysons whereas Raima here is just an item.

Emily keeps wondering what's she doing, is she becoming more like ones she wants to take revenge from etc. I found that conflict amiss except for few initial scenes of Durga and Dayal.

Even movies like Darr, Parinda, Agnisakshi have solid villains but they do describe why things happened the way they did. Why hero had to take illegal path, why villain is so vile and unapologetic etc., they told their audience.

EHT just did not give this layering.😭

There is no surprise, no suspense, nor any depth. Neither proper social comment. Criminals do dodge law but no one enters bank vaults on basis of beauty!

I lament the waste of good actors it had. Lament the potential. Missed opportunity this show is.

As someone who's studied psychology earlier and reads a lot on it, the development of deviant behaviour was always intriguing to me. Their regretting but suddenly doing deviant thing again and hiding behind mask of ruthlessness was always something that merited an analysis of its own.

Sakshi in particular represents this dichotomy. If someone else had talked of kasam to her she would have dismissed him or her as an idiot, a weak emotional fool. But when she got worried for Shaurya she herself started giving kasam to him, asked him to place his hand on her head and take promise of honesty.

She is being hypocritical. But it shows what vulnerable self she has been hiding behind that veneer of strong powerful woman.

Her past intrigues me like anything. What was she before even being Sakshi Rehmat Khan?

Shaurya is like typical rich heirs. Drunk on power. Like recently, a VIP's son made a BSF officer strip and played with his uniform and gun in a real life case. These boys are "Tu jaanta hai mera baap kaun bai?" Types and brought up to believe whole world is under their slippers.🤢

Why Arnab was so noble and Rajnath so bad and why such polar opposites despite blood relation is also something that makes me very curious.

The movie Parinda has great description of how normal people transform to bad. Anil, Jackie and Nana's characters all show different paths that lead to degeneration of morality. I ended up expecting a tad similar from EHT but...okay..I was wrong. Maybe the capability of actors overwhelmed me and made me expect too much.
