The world knows this girl as two different personalities.
To her near relatives, Sumo is a dutiful niece, a bound one too. She never steps outside her boundaries. She doesn't question her aunts. Their every wish is her command. She is there to support her cousins in whatever way she can. She is selfless to the point of annoying her grandfather who wishes she stopped acting like everyone's doormat.
Doormat.
Is that what Suman is? Is she enslaved by a debt her mother owes someone? Or does she simply fulfil her mother's role, as her maternal aunt wishes? She must want not to let her mother down, every time her name is taken. She must also know where the family wants her, once their needs are fulfilled. At times she comes across as someone trying hard to fit in...to be accepted...to be not made to feel like an orphan.
What joy does she get, putting others' needs before hers? Turning a blind eye to what she knows she cannot change? Shravan's dad would know how to explain that feeling of contentment.
Then there is the Sumo who oozes confidence, managing her small tiffin company. She is the boss there, struggling to make it on her own without any support.
She did not have a dad who sent her to London for higher studies, or a mother who would have taught her to groom herself. She did not become a Shravan or an Urvashi...or a Pushkar who had a business handed down to him. She did not have anyone to motivate or guide her.
Whatever she has, she has made it on her OWN.
ON HER OWN!
She could have very well made use of whatever little opportunities she had, dreamed big and flown to a US or London or Singapore, leaving her family behind...Or she could choose to be home where she longs to belong and make it on her own...
10 years down the lane, a Shravan can very well stand amidst his class and ask that question- What is Suman and Who is Suman? Suddenly her status is questioned... and compared to his...
Which of these girls does Shravan know? Does he know Suman or Sumo at all? Are these two sides equally a part of Suman, or is one a charade? Is Suman a weakness she cannot escape or is Sumo a world she escapes to? Or are these both dear to her?
Which one of these girls would Shravan get to know first? Who would break him and show him who the real Shravan is?
And then, where would Suman aka Sumo stand ? Would she equal him in status?
😉
