Finding You...
Part A
Three years ago..
In the veils of the night's shadow a darker element woke up, snatching away the light of the innocent. A van raced at an abnormal speed.
"Dr. Smita abhi aapko jana chahiye, you're done for the day." said Dr. Nirmala.
Dr. Smita nodded in agreement with the Dean and set out to leave only to be called back.
"Drive safely." Dr. Nirmala said warily as she always did.
Smita was bone-tired after weeks of hard work that she did, she had to get some rest now..back to home for a while, at least.
There was a hustle of media personals all over the place at the venue. It had to be, after all this was one of the biggest events where high ranking government officials and the most sort after businessmen were present. They were called on this high end meeting for an important and philanthropic purpose.
There was continuous incoming of company big shots. Everyone was at the their best attire..custom made with fashionable accessories. And he didn't lag behind either. He had his contemporary haircut.
The reporters interviewed a few of the CEOs and business magnets.
"So you can see everyone has glammed up for this event with their best self. We will be reporting every moment of this big event so stay tuned... Reporter Likhita for Channel KKN." said one of the journalists giving the live feed to her channel. As she turned back, she found the hottest thing in the world...she stood there spellbound for a while. "Liksy...Likhita..!" After being called by her fellow cameraman, she managed to utter, "There..there he is. Shreshth Kashyap - the dude..ahem..the ma.. man behind the successful company K & C group."
"You know, those reporters are not wrong actually..." the lady said in a husky tone as she circumvented around him.
He drove off from there half way through the function. Was it the Save my time' obsession of his or was it the event that made him take such an audacious step, nobody could make out.
He stopped seeing the signal on the main road but it didn't stop the rage in him.
On the other side of the signal Smita stood waiting for a green signal, and there a few cars away from her stood the van which carried the kids...life was indeed at cross roads. The signals turned green and their cars passed each other going in opposite directions.
He drove at high speeds, but the car in front of him was going at a very slow pace making him even more furious. So as he tried to overtake it, he observed the van coming towards him from the other side.
The driver saw Shreshth's car speeding towards him and the bright light blinded the drunk driver. On the spur of the moment, they swerved their vehicles in opposite directions in order to avoid an accident.
The traffic stalled there with chaos everywhere. Shreshth came out of his car and rushed towards the site. He saw that the van had flipped and children were trapped in it. Many others along with him gave a hand in getting the kids out.
Smita too had heard the crash and stopped the car. She got out of the car seeing the commotion. She then called her hospital ambulance services. Shreshth and a few others helped the children get out of the van. He himself lifted up the injured little ones and laid them on the stretcher. He was shocked to see kids as young as an year or two in the van at this hour of the night. This can't be anything good, he thought. Brushing his emotions aside, he handed over a baby to the ward boy.
The police arrived and found that the driver of the van had fled away from the site leaving the kids to their fate. The ambulance had arrived soon, as Lifeline Hospital' was the nearest one from the accident site.
They helped the injured kids get first aid. Smita, being the kind lady and dedicated doctor she has always been, helped in healing the injured kids leaving her comfort aside.
The loud siren screeched through silence of the night...
"Dr Nirmala and Dr. Rishi please come to the casualty ward." The hospital buzzed with urgent calls as emergency cases of the injured kids were taken in.
Back here the police took the witnesses' account of exactly what had happened.
"Mr Kashyap, can you please cooperate with us...kya aap bata sakte hai kya hua tha exactly.." the cops inquired.
"Yes sir" Shreshth narrated what had happened.
At the hospital, the little kids were being treated. The doctors at pediatric ward made sure the kids got all the medical help they could give, and then there were the police who inquired about everything that had happened. But the kids were too anxious because of the accident.
Smita made sure everything was taken care of and after giving her statement to the police, she set out to leave for her house.
"Beta please thoda khalo..varna aapki tabiyat kharab hojayegi" Smita heard a nurse failing to convince a little kid into eating her food.
"Kya hua nurse?" Smita inquired.
"Ma'am this child has not eaten anything and has been crying since the time she was brought here and she has high fever." The nurse informed her.
"Nurse, aap yeh juice mujhe dijiye, I'll do it." Seeing the innocent infant, Smita decided to give some solace to the child.
"Sir yeh sab say toh aap ki kahin na kahin galti dikhrahi hai..but it's your first time " The inspector frowned.
"I understand that if anyone has broken the rules, they have to be punished for that." Shresth said.
"Thank you for cooperating sir. Iss baar toh warning de ke chhod rahe hai. Ainda se dhyan rakhiyega. Aap apni car le jaa sakte hai." The cop informed Shreshth.
"Inspector." Shreshth uttered taking a leave from him.
--
Smita took the infant in her arms, and cuddled it, pacifying the crying baby in her gentle hands by moving it two and fro. Smita gave solace to the child and after a long while the baby slept in the warm arms of the doc.
Then Smita laid the child on the hospital bed and gave lukewarm bath treatment for the fever the child had, along with saline.
Part B
"Smita tum abhi tak nahi aayi ghar.." Nirmala questioned her niece.
"Mumu, I..there is this child.. a baby, she was crying and had fever, never to listened anyone,..soo..I.." Smita tried to justify herself but Nirmala knew her niece, Smita wouldn't leave someone in trouble and this was a baby, she had to make sure that the child was fine.
The next morning Smita left for her house and relaxed for a while.
That afternoon, she woke up at her own sweet time...but only with the ring of her cell phone, which of course was from the hospital.
It was the case from the previous night where the infant was having a hard time adjusting to the new changes and now was feeling the discomfort of the strangers around.
Smita would every now and then pop in and comfort the child. But soon it was the day when the child had to leave her, to another orphanage for a better life, perhaps. The mere thought itself was killing her on the inside, she felt a part of her was being cut off from her...it didn't feel right at all.
When she realized that her affection for the child was indeed pure, she decided to give the child and most of all herself a chance at this, at adopting the child. And then, she inquired from the cops more about the trafficking racket which had landed the kid in her hospital and now in her life. It was all freaking insane for her to even realize what could have been the fate of the child had those traffickers succeeded in their mission.
"The world is a terrible place." She thought to herself.
"Massi please, let me do this. I know my affection for the child is true and I am ready for everything. I know its gonna be very tough for me but I can't help my feelings for the kid." Smita justified her decision to her mumu.
"See Smita, I have a responsibility here and I can't just let you stand at the same place where I was a few years ago..not that I didn't want to, but I just want to tell you that it's a very big responsibility to take. Leave alone a single parent even a couple struggles at first or even for a long time in their lives. Aur kal ko agar tumhara pati uss bachi ko apnane se inkar kiya toh? Everything has price to be paid." explained Nirmala.
This little child who was still unknown of the warmth of a mother's lap and the love of a family, she thought it was the best way out of her void: to find who she really was... and it would give a better future to the little one.
So Smita took her decision into action by calling up the child care center and then the police to file the case.
There were days when she had to wait for hours at the court for her hearing, she would at times get demotivated by the tough rules that carved up between her and the child. But then her love for the child was unwavering.
What would have had happened if those dark elements had darkened her child's life in the most horrific ways which she was even scared to imagine...She thanked her stars for bringing Pari into her life.
