The lady cursed Balarama, Krishna & their wives, how does this mechanism of curses & blessings work? Krishna had to give 40 years from his life span to Kritverma's son to bring him back to life. A person when wishes something very strongly, good or bad & wants that to happen, must be giving some karmas from his/her life, to materialise that wish, which is called curse of blessing in other words. Was that lady that powerful enough to create such an event in Balaram & Krishna's life. Wasn't it written in her destiny, that her husband will end his life like this. When a person is blessed, he receives good, strong +ve vibes from the one who is blessing, which in turn may create a good pleasant event in his/her life. What does the person who is blessing looses, some of his good karmas, which he /she has collected with efforts. Please enlighten me on this topic.

I dont have much detailed knowledge about religion but I can say tht everything is predetermined to happen by God even curses and blessings are all part of the God's leela.
Krishna and Balram were in human avtaar so they were bound by human rules so accepted curse and blessings.Actually its little difficult to understand but universe maintainens the balance of Good and bad.I cant explain how but we can just assume tht curses are also somehow part of
Mahabrata happened in Dwarap yug the people were spiritually advanced than the kaliyug they could change God's will by their bhakti and had power to give curse. So Krishna and Balram received the curse.
This is my understanding. Not sure how correct I am.

This concept of curse exists in all yugas. In Brigu-Samhita, where past lives of different individuls are mentioned, 98% people are either cursed by somebody or have comitted some big mistake, resulting in big suffering in present life. That is why, wanted to understand, how does this mechanism work. Are all these curses justified or do they actually materalise?

I dont Think so tht all curses materialize and are as powerful.
curses occur in present yug also but We r not tht powerful tht it'll actually materialize. For example we might say something bad to someone in anger but its not necessary tht it'll happen we cant wish for something and dosent happen automatically.
In pervious yugs people were more spiritual so their curses were also powerful. We are all aatmas who are involved in cycle of rebirths and our goal is to get out of this tht called enlightment or nirvana.
Curse and blessing are part of this cycle. If someone is bad naturally they will get curses from different people and they'll suffer from it in their different lifes.
Similarly good people will get good lifes. All this is just part of God's leela...

Once anyone takes birth on Earth they have to follow the path of karma everyone is bound to it. And anyone who curses is bound to that person's karma too. I've heard that a lot of prayer can kill evil karma but i'm not sure if all cursings come true or why. I want to know that too.

With that, when God takes form in avatar, he is human on earth so he is also bound to the law's of karma.

That is why Krishna's life is interesting, events in his life gives deep understanding of various mystaries. How 1 karma leads to another, based on the circumstances, giving pleasant or unpleasant outcome.
May be blessings & curses are nothing but just a different name given to the result of our karmas, which starts another cycle of karmas, sometimes going on for various births, sometimes just 1 birth.

I have a new question on how does this work - not curses, but on how one's misdeeds/good deeds from a previous birth spill over to this one. And no, I'm not talking about the ridiculous tracks on some serials that show that.

This week, w/ Sudama, Krishna had been telling Satyabhama that what Sudama is suffering now is a result of his karma from a previous life. However, two questions do follow:
  1. If one is being taxed for karmas in a previous life, would that necessarily be from the one immediately preceding it, or can it be carried over? B'cos if the answer is yes, it would beg the question of why not let Sudama live happily this life, and in his next life, put him into a situation where he is not as pious, but nonetheless has to pay for his sins then.
  2. Let's say it's written that one's debts are to be paid off in this life. Does it have to be that it has to be paid off @ a moment pre-determined by destiny, or can it be done earlier, if possible? B'cos I found myself agreeing w/ Satyabhama - change Sudama's fortunes now, and if needed, bring down all his punishments on him in one fell swoop, and then start rewarding him.
Somehow, although they seem to have followed the Sudama story reasonably accurately (sans of course the Rukmini issue, which is still festering), I wonder whether this aspect of Sudama's predicament, if true, is being demonstrated accurately?

Very good Q. This concept of past birth karma's punishment or repayment is a very convinient term used to explain many things, which can not be explained or is beyond our understanding. Fortunately most of us can't see the future, if they do, they may start worrying about that, instead of living well in present.

Destiny is of 3 types 1) 100% unchangable, that generally forms 40% of our destiny, which is actually the result of our previous birth's karmas, good, bad excellent or worst. 2) 60-40 , ie 60% unchangable, same as 1st, but remaining 40% can be changed. These are the cases where an event will happen, but we can change the result with our hard work or efforts. If one doesn't put any effort to improve here, then it gives same result as 1st. eg in Tulabharam incident SB did put an effort to get Krishna back, had she not put the effort of asking an alternative way to Naradji, she would have lost Krishna forever. But she did apply her brain, put the effort, got help from "Rukmini"( I cant say JV). So in this Leela Krishna gave her options. 2nd type of destiny is same as this. This is our remaining 30% destiny.
3) For balance 30%, God gives us freedom to do whatever we want. Here we perform karmas which will give result in this birth & can be carried foreword to the next birth too. This part of the destiny, we creat with our own free will, or are forced to do something unwillingly, our thought pattern plays a mojore role in whatever we do. Here our 'Sanskar", efforts & the circumstances makes or ruins our destiny.
God is above all the planets. He can change the destiny as per what SB says. But he should also give the comelete package. Inspiring that lady to give kheer to Sudama is not sufficient, he should reach home with the kheer, his children should eat it that's the final thing. Krishna only initiated the process but for compeletion his destiny has to be altered. Since God is above destiny, if Sudama is constantly taking Krishna's name that also means he is The Sakshi of whatever is happening in Sudama's life. This is actually Krishna's test, how long he can see his friend suffering.
In Durgasaptashati's 1st part, Vishnuji was fighting with the demons Madhu & Kaithabh. After many years of fight he was not able to kill them, He called Yogamaya, who changed those demons thoughts, they told Vishnuji to ask for a boon from them. Vishnuji asked that they should be killed by him ,they said tathastu & Vishnuji killed them. Here God changed their thinking to get the desired result. So some changed thoughts or events can make Sudama come & meet Krishna.
It is written in Sudama's destiny to meet Krishna. His children's hunger is only a catalyst, which will trigger the main event.

Mahabharat has many cases of abnormal births. In all the cases they have gone out of their way to get children. When an event doesn't happen naturally but takes place by going out of the way, then the final outcome is also not normal. Can we say Mahabharat happend because all these souls wanted to settle their scores with each other & the entire process was called a war between Dharma & Adharma. In Treta yuga & Sat yugga it was called a war between devas & asuras. Here Pandava's are deva-putras, Kauravas have major qualities of asuras. Krishna is God himself. In all the 3 yugs war between good & evil always continues under different names.

Yeah, there are too many cases of 'out-of-wedlock' birth in the Mahabharata:
  • Vyasa - Rishi Parashara simply decided to have a go @ Satyavati
  • Dhritarashtra, Pandu & Vidura - Ambika & Ambalika simply had to go thru this b'cos of the vow Satyavati's father tied Bheeshma to
  • Karna & the Pandavas - in case of the Pandavas, Pandu couldn't pro-create w/o risking his life, and Karna was born due to Kunti wanting to test Durvasa's boon
  • Yuyutsu
Rishi Parashara should have left Satyavati alone. Since Ambika & Ambalika would have been unable to procreate, Satyavati should have been made queen, and Bheeshma responsible for the country's defense. He'd then have realized that personal vows do have to make way for greater interests of the kingdom.

Pandu's reason for wanting sons wasn't so much that they'd rule Hastinapur, but b'cos he wanted to walk to heaven - something that the Pandavas too wanted to do once it was all over. But he wasn't allowed to until he fulfilled his pitri-rin of procreating, so that his sons would offer oblations to his ancestors. Although, in that case, one son from Kunti and one from Madri would have been enough.

As far as settling scores went, the first one to surface was Amba's, who was wronged by Bheeshma, and after seeing even Parashurama defeated, she decided to keep getting reborn until she became Shikandi. Bheeshma was certainly to blame for disrupting their swayamvar - had he not done it, there'd have been no Pandavas or Kauravas, and nor would Amba's life have been destroyed. The other score I can think of is Karna's, but his real grudge ought to have been against Kunti, rather than Arjun.

The other major score I can think of is Drupada's, who begat Dhristadyumna in order to kill Drona. Was a pretty lame yagna, I must say, in that in the past, whenever someone was born for the sake of killing somebody, that someone was way superior in battle to the target - whether it was Rama against Ravana, Kartikeya against Surapadman & Taraka, Ayappan against Mahishi, Parashurama against Kartavirya Sahasrabahu, and so on. But in this case, Dhristadyumna was vastly inferior to Drona in battle, and had to be rescued by Bhima or Satyaki in every battle w/ Drona that he fought. Whoever granted Drupada his boon, what was the point of granting such a son who was no match for the top Kuru warriors - meaning Bheeshma, Drona, Ashwatthama, Kripa & Karna? Yeah, Dhristadyumna was superior to Duryodhan, but so was Drupada.

Anyway, this is all that I could think of @ the moment.
