A Drop of Blood
"Antara, we are moving to Brampton," my mom says. "But why? I don't want to leave," I reply. "Antara, please try and understand. We have our reasons for this," she says. I turn around and run up the stairs.
I lay down on my bed, thinking about what had just happened. I don't like fighting with my mom, but I don't want to move either. Life is perfect here. Brampton is so boring, nothing like Toronto. I don't really have a choice though. I have to move. I sigh and lay down, attempting to go to sleep. I stifle a yawn and wonder what Brampton will have in store for me.
"Antara, hurry up and bring the boxes in," my mom yells from inside the house. I sigh and head to the back of the truck. I pick up the closest box and start off towards the door. It was much heavier than it had been before. The box is about to fall from my hands right when someone catches it.
"Whoa there, watch it," he says. I look up and see a guy, most likely my age. He was tall and good-looking. Really good looking. He had dark brown, almost the same shade as mine. "I'm sorry," I say. "It's fine. Do you want some help?" he asks. His magical brown eyes meet mine and it's as if they hold me captive. There was something about them that wouldn't let me look away.
"Yeah sure," I say, and let him take the box from me. He smiles and follows me. Why did I say yes? It was just a box. I could have carried it by myself. I turn around to see him still standing outside. "You can come in, you know," I say. He smiles and walks in. He introduces himself to my parents as Raghu. What an interesting name; Raghu.
"Hey, thanks for the help," I say as he is about to leave.
"No problem. Well since you have moved here, are you going to go to North Park?" he asks.
"Yeah, I transferred there," I reply.
"Well, I guess I'll see you there."
"Yeah, I'll see you around."
The next few weeks pass by with me settling into the house and getting ready for school. I meet Raghu often and webecome really good friends. We really started to like each other. The two of us have learnt quite a bit about each other. Apparently, we both love volleyball. What a coincidence!
The night before school starts, Raghu and I are sitting in the backyard, talking, when I notice something in the sky. "Raghu, did you see that?" I ask.
"See what?" he asks in return.
"I think it's a shooting star," I say, pointing up to the sky.
Raghu looks up and says, "You better make a wish then but make sure you wish carefully." I close my eyes and wish that Raghu would be a part of my life forever.
Today is the first day of school and I am really nervous. I haven't met anyone other than Raghu since I had spent all of my time with him. I started to really like him. He was becoming special. Raghu does introduce me to his friends. It turns out that Raghu and I have all, but one class together. It's nice meeting new people and making new friends, but I definitely miss my friends in Toronto.
"Hey Antara, wait up," I hear Raghu call behind me.
"Yeah, what happened?" I ask.
"Well, the try outs for the girl's volleyball team are tonight after school," he says.
"So?" "So I was wondering if you were going."
"Yeah I am."
"That's awesome; do you need a ride after? I mean, I'm staying for practice as well, soo it would be better if we went home together."
"Sure, why not?" I smile and head towards my next class.
After the tryouts, I walk down the hall when I hear something behind me. I turn around to find nothing there. I look around, but no one there. I walk to the front doors, looking for Raghu. He's the one who said we would meet here, but he's not here himself, I thought.
I walk out in to the parking lot, looking for him, but he was nowhere to be found. I walk around to the back of the school, thinking that he might be there. If he's not here, then where is he? The parking lot is almost deserted, just a few cars left, not a single one of them Raghu's. I look around once more but nothing changed from last time.
I sigh and turn around and come face to face with someone. It's Raghu.
"Raghu, where were you? I was looking around for you like crazy," I say.
He cups my face gently and says, "I'm so sorry, Antara. I didn't mean to keep you waiting."
"No that's fine, I think we should go home now, it's getting quite late," I say.
"Where's your car?" "It's at the front, come, let's go." He takes my hand and leads me towards the front of the school. Why is Raghu acting so different?
The next morning at school, I find a note on my locker. It reads: Meet me in the back parking lot after school, Raghu. That's probably where he would be parked today. I tuck the note away into my textbook and head off to my first period class.
As soon as the bell rings at 3:00, I head to my locker to grab my jacket and textbooks. I go out to the back and see that the parking lot is deserted once again. That's weird. There are normally a lot of people here since it's after school. Suddenly, I feel a strong grip on my right wrist and a hand comes over my mouth. I attempt to scream, but it turns into a mumble that no one can hear. Whoever the person is, leads me over to an isolated place. I tried to release my hand from their grip, but their hold is too strong. I kick at their legs, forcing them to move, but they are too strong for me.
When they finally take their hand off my mouth, I take a deep breath. I turn around and seem Raghu.
"Raghu, what was that?" I ask in shock. What had Raghu been up to? He looks straight into my eyes once again and holds me captive.
"That was nothing. I just wanted you to be a part of something," he says.
"What do you want me to be a part of?" I ask, still looking into his eyes. He leans closer and closer to my neck, without breaking his eye contact with my eyes. "Promise me you won't scream."
"I promise." He leans in and I feel something sharp pierce my neck.
I wake up with a scream. I sit up straight and look around. I was still in my room, in Toronto. I touch my neck, relieved to find no blood there. I reach to my nightstand and pick up my water bottle and take a sip, trying to slow my breathing. I was home alone tonight; mom and dad had gone to drop Ishaan off at his university and were planning on staying in Ottawa for the night. I look at the clock and see that it's 3:30 in the morning. I lie back down and close my eyes, attempting to fall asleep once again. My eyes open up again as I feel something weird. I sit up and look out my window. I see a guy looking at me. It was Raghu.
