Excellent post Naina, one of the best so far. My take on the subject of discussion

1. It has been almost 5000 years since women were allowed to move freely and express their viewpoints and debate without being put down.

2.For that to change a mere 100 years is insufficient. West has taken 300 years.

3.The change at least in the Indian context has to start with the family first. If a girl and a boy are treated equal by the family then respect for women will start from there.

4. The school curriculum has to be structured in such a way that right from childhood children are taught to be respectful towards women.

5.Media can play a powerful role in this awakening. The print media can reach only the educated few. It is the television which can reach remote corners of India and start the process of change.

6. All crimes against woman right from eve teasing should be harshly and swiftly punished. Unless that happens there will be no deterrent.

7.Unless an Indian man accepts the new Indian woman who is educated, economically independent and expresses her opinion at will, rapes will not stop or go down. To a great extent rapes in India are due to inability on the part of males to accept this gradual change. They feel they can show their physical domination by raping the woman and making her feel ashamed and succeed in keeping her suppressed.

8.Coming down hard on female foeticide will prevent the gender ratio from being skewed. Men have dominated us for centuries and our own gender have helped them in reinforcing this domination.

9.Governance is a major issue, be it the policing or the judiciary, they have to be pressurised each time to do their work. When there is public pressure or media outcry, the case is taken up not otherwise. We need a good leadership at the centre to push us in that direction. We do not have it now.

10.. Last but not the least we have to be patient as change takes time. A 5000 year old setup cannot be wished away. Things have improved with the spread of education but lot needs to be done. We are all caught up in the in between period where neither has our education given us full freedom nor are we totally backward and cannot go out to work. Serials like Diya aur Bati hum through a submissive Sandhya have tried to show the fight from within the system to break it. A Sandhya who revolts , answers back and leaves the house would never be emulated or followed. DABH seeks to create 1000s of Sandhya not one who walked away from the system. Bhabo represents traditionalism and this serial is a fight between the conservative mind and modernity for domination.
The answer to your question would be change will be shown coming in the serial, on the ground it is likely to take another half a century.

Excellent ten point action plan Umdu aunty.👏

I would like to add the role of social media like Facebook, blogs and even a platform like our forum.Everything will play a role.I believe in the strength of humans to achieve the impossible.

@ your blue lines --That is what I term as "hybrid society". There is an immediate need to shift from the wrong side to the right side.

@ your red lines -- Again, valid point here.Sooraj and Sandhya of DABH represent the middle-men of the society. People who decide to change the society by being a part of it and not running away from it. They are the people who respect the family system and the society outside and through sheer determination change the mind-set of people around them.
I wish to see more programs like DABH and Satyameva Jayate. I have been hearing a lot of good things about the movie "Matru ki Bijlee ka Mandola" too.Lets see what that has in store for us.

Silence will serve you nothing other than more violence against you.
It takes a lot of courage to tolerate than to shout out and protest.
Then why can't we choose the easier option?
When there is a Malala...only 15 year old girl, who never fear to voice her rights...Why can't we too? At least we can try to try...

Am saying all these..But I myself am not sure whether I am able enough to stand for my rights or to stand against the wrong!
I guess that's a huge drawback, we say, we discuss, we write but we don't do!

Naina...Am so proud of you darling! What a masterpiece!👏
Gale lag ja soniye🤗

@Bold:- Very well put.⭐️. We need to take actions. Before blaming someone/system we've to look within ourselves.

N yes, I'd like to alter Naina's question:- When will Sooraj find his Sandhya?

We girls are so smart nowadays. When we think about life partner what we demand - His high qualification/ bungalow/ car/ sound financial background so that we can spend our life comfortably.

All n All I'm trying to convey here is that if you seek for a Sooraj than you've to become a Sandhya as well in every aspect.😊.

N I'm proud of both of you daarling.. JhappiyaPale.🤗. 🤗.🤗. I badly need to warm up myself..😆..

@ Naina, thank you for your appreciation, but I would like to add that it is not our class of people which needs to change. Most of us already are in the realm of liberal thought . It is the vast majority of 70% or so of our population living in villages and semi rural areas which has to develop an acceptability of the modern Indian woman. We in IF or our social circles are fairly modern in our thinking. We need not move to the other side as we are already there. We have to make this 70% move in the same direction. That cannot be achieved without the spread of education. For that the government has to be proactive which it is not. The reason being it is in their interest in keeping the population backward and illiterate, as once education spreads they cannot garner votes from this vast majority. It is this vicious cycle which prevents change from happening and the old system from weaning away. No doubt Facebook, twitter blogs and candle light vigils will put pressure on the government to act in the Delhi gangrape case, but are we expected to do this everytime a rape or murder happens? Is such a campaign sustainable ? How many people in India have access to social networking sites ? The same thing happened with the Anna Hazare anti corruption campaign. With media pressure the crowd collected, in the second stage it went down and now the movement has broken down with multiple splits. Naina, I feel it is the television which reaches remote corners which can make some impact and with education spreading the mindset will eventually change but all this will take time. Our political class has failed us and we have very little options there when we go to vote. Social mobilization like the one we had during freedom struggle requires a committed, selfless and acceptable leadership which we do not have now. Leadership which we can trust to give us a hope to change.

@Ami Di, n Faru Di...😊

Yessu Yessu...!! In deed...! I totally agree with your points!⭐️

Thanks for conveying it, even I believe that Ladies themselves should be ready to be like Sandhya so that none would dare to say a word!😃 or like self sufficient...!!😳

But don't u think the male's of India actually not expecting a Sandhya!
Don't u think the males expect their spouse to be socially lower to them! (I've personal experiences from friends, but in my family, they are okay with it..)

and even look at SurYa, for instance, if she knew that Sooraj'sa was halwai before marriage, we wouldn't have had seen them! So the reverse also true? i.e. females expect the spouse to be of their equivalent status?

I wold say in deed its difficult to be like Sooraj'sa or Sandhya, but that is the necessity of the time, we have to urge ourselves to that level to develop the society!

@Uma Ji, correct thought, in fact its so true, TV is above every mass media in India, in Tamil Nadu, once BJP concluded their bad performance in election that "we don't own a channel" and they started one... yeah Iin TN almost all parties own a channel to reach the crowd

so this is where DABH, SJ n similar things comes to role...!!

probably film industry should also come into play...!!

Vishnu...True bro!
But when every girl becomes a Sandhya, then every boy has to become Sooraj! There is no other way out! (Just like Shirin said)
Else they have to die unmarried!😉 😆

@Faru Di, Yeah of course...! Else she has to remain as Vaishnavi devi! as the Virgin Power Lady to the world...!!

and in fact if the changes occur in guys, i think it ll be passed very fast to the female section our subcontinent...!! its fact, but same time ladies should wield the power of change too...!!

and ladies should march up to the stage to remove the saying "the sorrow of a lady is another one "

Thanks Naina for this thought-provoking post. The past few days had been miserable for me learning about the safety of women in our country. I am left speechless by both the responsibility of the normal citizens, especially students, who protested at India Gate for the unknown girl as well as by our government and politicians whose comments and actions unmasked them how much they care for the people.
Agree with all the replies and hope the spirit and awareness lit by Jyothi Singh Pandey (the delhi victim) continue to change our society and government to make this place a safe home for women.
