A magnificent ceremony marked Thatatakai's ascent to the throne. Whatever doubts anyone may have had on a woman- in fact, a girl, barely sixteen- being able to rule the Pandyan kingdom ' were dispelled when they saw her standing magnificently, the sword and sceptre in her hands.

The waters of the seven sacred rivers were poured on her, the crown placed on her head and the royal umbrella, studded with gold and gems, unfurled above her head. Brahmins chanted benedictions and showered rice and flowers on her.

Since her mother wanted, Thatatakai, first went to the Shiva temple her father had constructed ' the one where a swambhu linga had been discovered . She touched the linga with her hand then touched her eyes, seeking his blessings to make her reign successful.

In his abode at Kailash, Shiva was startled out of his meditation by the touch which was so familiar to him. "Parvati?" he wondered, looking around.

"Lord" came the prayer from far below, " I place this kingdom in your hands. Help me be a worthy ruler. "

"Thataastu" replied Shiva raising his hand in blessing

"Lord, let none in my kingdom suffer, give me the power to alleviate everyone's suffering.

"Thataastu." Shiva was moved by her earnestness.

"And ...Lord... if you please..." Thataakai's voice dipped.

Shiva smiled. The same hesitation while asking him for something. Nothing had changed. Even as Parvati, whenever she had to ask something from him, it would be with so much hesitation... so many pauses...

He could sense the same hesitancy in her voice now.

"Go on..." Shiva replied encouragingly "You know I will never refuse you anything..."

"Please Lord..." Thataatakai sounded more confident now "Please Lord, if you can, stop my mother from pestering me to get married"

Shiva's face broke into a broad grin and he rubbed his hands gleefully.

"Your wish is granted, Mother Kanchanamala. Sorry, Parvati"
