Mira, dere's nothing like dis vrat is done mostly by north indians and not south indians.Anybody can do dis vrat. It's jst dat some ppl believe in it and some don't.
For eg.,i hv seen some north indians in delhi not doing it but i hv seen many south indians in chennai doing it.
So it varies frm person to person.

I never said it can't be performed by S Indians.

What I meant is rituals and customs and practices vary by region and even within regions. Sometimes a ritual may be performed in N India but not in S India and vice versa. Even within S India, customs certainly vary. So what someone in Andhra might do might be unrecognizable to someone in Kerala etc. It doesn't preclude anything or preclude anyone from practicing something.

All I was wondering was whether there was a regional origin & concentration for this particular vrat.

maybe it's not done in Tamil Nadu? I'll ask my mother. But would be interested in hearing from other S Indians too...

Anyway, my not hearing of it means nothing. šŸ˜†

Mira dear , can u remember hearing Karthigai SOma Var VIratham in Tamil nadu (ITS famous in Kerla too)😃.

IN the month of karthigai (mid Nov-to - Mid dec). All the saivates used to kept any one of the two special Virats according to their belief, Sasti viratham and Karthigai soma vara viratham.

Karthigai Somavaram, is the Mondays in the Tamil Month Karthigai which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Kartika Somavar Vratam is observed by Shiva devotees in the month and special pujas and rituals are held in Shiva temples maintained by Tamil community. Fasting from sunrise to sunset is undertaken by many devotees.

Kartigai Somavar Vratam is from sunrise to sunset. Devotees do not consume food after sunrise. Some people opt for a liquid diet or fruit diet and others go for the traditional strict fasting of without food.

Prayers and puja dedicated to Shiva is performed early in the morning. The puja begins with prayer to Lord Ganesh. A picture of Lord Shiva or Shivling is used for the prayer.

Karthigai Somavar Vratam ends with the evening puja after sunset.

Shiva devotees usually avoid diet consisting of garlic and onion while breaking a fast

during karthigai deepam day (Birth Star of LOrd Skandha according to Tamilians)they will visit Thiruvannamalai temple for Finishing their fast session. SO every wish will be fulfilled ,if one follows the Virat sincerely is their belief.
