It is said that when Mahadev was drinking the poison Halahal some of its content spilled from his hand and fell on the ground. Nandi, the eternal servant of Mahadev noticed it and drank it from the ground. All the gods became worried about Nandi as he consumed halahal. Mahadev smiling replied that Nandi is his greatest servant and all his powers belong to Nandi too. Poison cannot touch him either.

  3. 3 Hayagriva.
  4. 4 Swarbhaanu or Rahu

  6. 6 Vaishwaanar.

Daru's first son was Puloman.

1)Puloman is the father of Indrani/ Sachi (Indra's wife) and Sivasri, who ruled the kingdom for seven years. Puloman was slain by Indra, who blasted him by the outpouring of his splendor.

2)Viprachitti: As per Surya Puran he became the king of Danavas after his brother Puloman was killed by Indra. Viprachitti married Holika who was sister of Hiranyakashipu and daughter of Diti. He was one of the 100 sons of Sage Kashyapa and Danu. He was the most powerful of the hundred. This story is mentioned in the Padma Purana. His army defeated Devas under the guidance of Rahu.

3)Hayagriva, a son of Danu, feels this is unfair to demons and determines to keep the Vedas away from humanity. Brahma is worried that mankind is too evil to receive the Vedas, and goes to consult Shiva about purifying the earth first. While Brahma is away, Hayagriva kidnaps the Vedas (who are in the form of four small boys) and imprisons them in his underwater lair. Shiva agrees to flood the earth to destroy all evil life and purify it; Brahma can then create humanity anew and give them the Vedas. While Manu is bathing, a tiny fish swims into his hands and begs for protection. Manu takes it home, but it grows to giant size in a single night and he releases it into the ocean, where he realizes the fish is none other than Lord Vishnu. As Matsya, the fish, Vishnu warns Manu of the coming flood and asks him to save anything important in a boat.

Hayagriva( with a human body and a horse's head, ) decides to destroy the Vedas but Matsya appears first and kills Hayagriva. Manu and Shatarupa gather plants and animals, deciding to save everything rather than having the pride to think they know what is valuable and what is not. At the last minute, Manu thinks of bringing the seven primordial sages, the Saptarishis. The deluge. Manu's boat is tossed by the storm but Matsya tows it to safety. After the flood, Vishnu gives the Vedas again to the nine survivors.

{{about hyagreev

In Sakta mythology

Hyagreeva retutned Vedas to Brahma which are taken to Rasatala

In the Sakta tradition of Hinduism, Hayagriva occupies a different role. Here, a demon named Hayagriva first appears as son of Kashyapa Prajapati. Through great penance the demon managed to obtain a boon from the Goddess Durga that he can only be killed by another "Hayagriva". This instilled a sense of invincibility and he started harassing the Devas. The Devas turned to Vishnu for aid, but despite a long struggle he was also unable to kill Hayagriva.

Tired and drained after the battle, Vishnu proceeded to Vaikuntha Dham to rejuvenate and meditate in padamaasna (a yoga posture) with his head supported by the upper end of his taut bow. The Devas once again approached Vishnu for help against Hayagriva but were unable to rouse him from his meditation. The Devas asked a swarm of termites to assist in waking Vishnu by gnawing away the string of the bow upon which he was resting. However, the snapping of the bow string produced such a resonant sound that the universe trembled, and the broken string lashed out with such force that Vishnu's head was severed from his body.

The Devas were mortified, and prayed to the goddess Durga for guidance. Durga was pleased with their prayers and told the Devas that they need not fear, as no incident in this universe was without some purpose. She then told them of her boon to Hayagriva and asked them to attach the head of a horse to Vishnu so that he in the guise of "Hayagriva" (that is, one with a horse's neck) could kill his foe.

Brahma attached the head of a white horse to Vishnu's body and the revived Vishnu entered into battle with Hayagriva and eventually killed him.

Another legend has it that during the creation, the demons Madhu and Kaitabha stole the Vedas from Brahma, and Vishnu then took the Hayagriva form to recover them. The two bodies of Madhu and Kaitabh disintegrated into 2 times 6 ' which is twelve pieces (two heads, two torsos, four arms and four legs). These are considered to represent the twelve seismic plates of the Earth. Yet another legend has it that during the creation, Vishnu compiled the Vedas in the Hayagriva form.

Some consider Hayagriva to be one of the Dashavatars of Vishnu.[citation needed] He along with Krishna, Rama and Narasimha is considered to be an important avatar of Vishnu.

Lord Hayagreev's Sannithanam is there in Srirangam Temple. Hayagreev in Srirangam is very famous for children's education. The sannithanam is very beautiful and all rituals done according to vedic principles very strictly.

5)Vrishparva fought many wars with Indra with the help of his main priest Shukracharya. He made many attempts to kill Kacha, the son of Brishapati. His daughter is Sharmishtha.

6)Vaishwanaar had four beautiful daughters - Upadaanavee, Hayashiraa, Pulomaa and Kaalakaa. Upadaanavee was married to Hiranyaaksh and Hayashiraa was married to Kratu.

Daitya's younger sister Rachanaa was married to Twashtaa. They gave birth to two sons Sannivesh and Vishwaroop. Although Vishwaroop was the nephew(sister's son) of Daitya and also his brother's son, even then Indra appointed Vishwaroop as their Purohit when Devguru Brahaspatiji left devta after getting insulted from Indra.

Till I have thrown some light on danavas family. Now I want to narrate a story that how a danavas daughter and daughter of Shukracharya became the wife of Yayati ( A raghuvanshi and great grand father of King Dashrath). When you will know this story you will be very surprised.

As I told u about Vrishparva a danav.. His daughter is Sharmishtha (a friend of Devayani, the daughter of Sage Shukracharya).

Story about Sharmishtha,Devayani and Yayati

Once when Devayani and Sharmistha were taking bath in a pool. Suddenly a storm blew up and scattered their clothes. The girls hurriedly came out of the lake and got dressed. It so happened that the princess Sharmishtha, by mistake, clad herself in Devayani's clothes. Angered by this, Devayani insulted Sharmishtha, the Asura princess. Argument began and Sharmishtha pushed Devayani into a dry well and left Devayani in the well.

Then Yayati, the king of a nearby state, came hunting in the forest and was looking for water to drink. When he came near the well he was surprised to find Devayani lying at the bottom. Devayani introduced herself and said that she fell into the well. She then requested the king to pull her out. Yayati helped her out. Devayani demanded that Yayati marry her as he has held her by the right hand. Yayati was alarmed and turned down her request. Yayati then left and Devayani continued to sit under a tree.

When she did not return, Sukracharya set out in search of her. He found Devayani under a tree, her eyes filled with tears of anger and grief. When Sukracharya inquired, Devayani told her father every thing, carefully hiding her own faults. She refused to return to the kingdom of Vrishaparva as she was badly insulted by the Asura princess, Sharmishtha.

Shukracharya returned to Vrishaparva and announced that he was leaving the Asura kingdom because of his daughter Devayani's unhappy conflict with princess Sharmishtha. Vrishaparva wasted no time and went to Devayani taking his daughter Sharmishtha along. He begged forgiveness for his daughter. Devayani agreed to return on one condition that Sharmishtha be her handmaiden for the rest of her life. Sharmishtha agreed for the sake of her father, the king.

One day, king Yayati passed that way. Devayani introduced Sharmishtha as her maid and reminded Yayati that he should marry her. Yayati said that he could not marry a Brahmin maid. Devayani then took Yayati to her father. Sukrachaya gave his blessing on their marriage. They were soon married and led a happy life. Devayani had two sons. Yayati made a palace for Shramishtha at the request of Devayani. One day Sharmishtha secretly met Yayati and told him what happened between her and Devayani. Yayati was sympathetic. Sharmishtha begged Yayati to take her as the second wife. Yayati agreed and married her but without the knowledge of Devayani. Sharmishtha had three sons 1. Druhyu 2. Anu and 3. Puru.

One day, Devayani met the three sons of Sharmishtha. She asked the boys the name of their father. They pointed to Yayati. Devayani was shocked. She felt deceived and ran to her father's hermitage. Sukracharya was enraged and cursed Yayati with premature old age. Yayati begged for forgiveness. Sukracharya and Devayani felt sorry for him. Sukracharya then said, "I cannot take back my curse, but if any of your sons is ready to exchange his youth for your old age, you will be young again as long as you wish", which was later remedied by her son Puru.

In Hindu Astronomy the constellation Cassiopeia is known as Sharmishtha Nakshatra.
