7)Goddess Lakshmi

Goddess Lakshmi came out from Samundra. That's why she is also called Sagar Putri. When she arrives, demi-gods and demons started fighting as to whom this lady should go?

Devtas: She is a Devi, so she should be with devtas.

Asurs: She will came to us, u can take all gems that come out from ocean, but she will come to us.

Seeing fighting between them, Lord Brahma interrupted and said, She is lady, not a gem. She will decide, where she want to go. I take her as a sister and will arrange a Syamber for her. The person whom this lady would garland would become her husband.

Here all demi-gods and demons participated and Lakshmi garland Vishnu. This is how she became again the consort of Vishnu.

That is why Ksheer-sagar is also a home of Lakshmi-Narayan.

That is also a reason of doing Lakshmi- Puja on Diwali as this day she came out from Manthan.

Then again the churning begins.

8) Varuni or Sura, goddess and creator of alcohol - taken - somewhat reluctantly (she appeared dishevelled and argumentative) - by the demons. This led to wine, Scotch, Irish pubs and the Mukherjee duo - Debdas and Keshto.

It is also said that Varuni or Varunani is the female consort of Varuna and the goddess was adopted by Varuna when she came out of the ocean, during the churning for amrita(immortal nectar).

11) Sharanga, the bow of Vishnu

12) A powerful bow - symbolic of the demon's belligerence.

There are many others gems that came out from Samundra-manthan, that were taken by gods and demons. But there is not any mention of this, So here I stopped mentioning gems. It is said that Apsaras also came out from Samundra-manthan. But It is also said that this apsaras are the grand-daughters of Daksh-Prajapati. So I haven't mention it.

All the others gems were distributed fairly among demons and Gods. At the end Nector of Immorality came out.

Once the amrita was out, the demons forcefully took it away. The Asuras contrive to keep the Amrita for themselves, angering the Devas.

During this tussle few drops of the drinkfell at Ujjain, Nasik,Allahabad, and Haridwar.

The drops are said to have purified the land and it is here that every year devotees come to wash away theit sins in the famous assembly called Kumbh Mela.

Vishnu, wise to their plan, assumes the form of an "enchanting damsel {Mohini}".

She uses her allure to trick the Asuras into giving her the Amrita, and then distributes it amongst the Devas. Rahu, an Asura, disguises himself as a god and tries to drink some Amrita himself. Surya (the sun-god) and Chandra (the moon-god) quickly inform Vishnu, and he uses the Sudarshana Chakra (the divine discus) to decapitate Rahu, leaving the head immortal. The decapitated body becomes Ketu. Rahu and Ketu are both regarded as celestial bodies that assume one's destiny.

Since he too had become immortal, Lord Vishnu ordered Rahu (the head) and Ketu (the body) to remain in the company of the sun and moon, and thus they complete the Navagraha along with the other planets. The significance of the 7 planets + Rahu and Ketu will be discussed in another post...

It is said that the eclipse occurs whenever Rahu tries to engulf the moon or come between the moon and the sun. It is important to note the reference of Rahu sitting between the Sun and Moon, thus creating a barrier or shadow, which is the principle of the eclipse. This is how the concept of eclipses was passed down from generation to generation in ancient India.

Meanwhile, a Shloka in which Aryabhatta, India's great mathematician and astronomer of the ancient age, has lucidly explained the concept of both the Solar and Lunar eclipses. This Shloka, from his famous work Aryabhatiyam, was stated in 499 AD,

"The moon covers the sun and the great shadow of the earth covers the moon."

Thus, in a single line, Aryabhatta has described both the eclipses. Truly a blessed and great soul!

[ The other major Hindu epic Ramayana (4 century BCE) narrates the Mohini story briefly in the Bala Kanda chapter. This same tale is also recounted in the Vishnu Purana four centuries later. ]
[ This legend is also retold in the Padma Purana[16] and Brahmanda Purana. In the Brahmanda Purana, however, Vishnu-Mohini simply, after mediation upon the Great Goddess Maheshvari, acquires her form to trick the thieving asuras. ]
