Is teaching a profession ? I say no it's more of a community service OR bring up responsible future adults.

Teachers hold the most importance in guiding the Nation's youth, they have an oppurtunity to interact to the youth on day to day basic, and there is no doubt youth(16 - 21) is our future.

Just being qualified is not enuff, teachers of today should really get training on how to bring in benefits long term not only to person/family/town/state/counmtry but the world, subject irrespective.

Do you think teachers of today realize this and do beyond the curriculum ?

Are teachers of today treat thier teaching more then job?

Should the process / qualification to become a teacher change atleast at univ. level, to include 2-3 years of community service?

Teachers are spinal cord of tommorow's future, do you disagree?

Traditionally, teaching was a vocation, like being a doctor, lawyer etc.

But like all these "vocations" that are now "professions" the ones practising are no longer respected for the valuable contribution they provide society.

Litigation is what rules, and due to the threat of litigation, many doctors, lawyers and teachers have no choice but to place limits upon comes within the ambit of their "job"

"To deliver a curriculum of academic education" is what a lot of teachers now do. Forget about the additional nurturing, caring and life teaching that may have once happened.

In an environment where the teacher's every step is governed in rules about what they can and cannot do - to the point of overlooking common sense- it's really not their fault at all that they treat their vocation as nothing more than a job.

It's a sign of our times I'm afraid.

It used to be true when "gurur devo bhava" was the guiding principle. These days "shishya devo bhava" is more like it.

Do you think teachers of today realize this and do beyond the curriculum ? Don't know about everyone, but I'd say a lot of us still do. However, not everyone looks at it positively. I've heard people saying that teachers should just teach and not interfere in other spheres of life!

Are teachers of today treat thier teaching more then job? Some definitely are.

Should the process / qualification to become a teacher change atleast at univ. level, to include 2-3 years of community service? I think more than anything else, people should hold teachers in higher esteem. This would encourage teachers to uphold their responsibilities.

Teachers are spinal cord of tommorow's future, do you disagree? No 😛

Raj , I think you are talking about Gurus , the way they used to be eons ago. Not possible now due to population growth and emphasis on every child being educated, demand for teachers like doctors is huge.😊 It takes more then required academic qualifications to become a guru imo. and unfair to put that burden on teachers of today when cultures and sociaties are leaning towards individual expression of non conforming kind.

Lighty, some of us still feel responsible for the moral fibre of our students. When I step into class, I am not there just to teach. I am there to guide, support and encourage. And students appreciate it. It is reflected in their comments when they talk about teachers being "more" than teachers. My personal opinion is that one should be really passionate about being a teacher, otherwise choose another profession. Often I have seen women becoming teachers because it's a half-day job with lots of holidays; it doesn't mess up their house-wifely chores too much and there is a certain modicum of respect attached to it. What will they bring to the classroom? Not to say that men are all great teachers. Some choose the profession because it's the easiest to deal with if all you want to do is make money. Those who become teachers because they want to make a difference are the ones we need!

First I saw the title and immediatley logged in to have a big fight with Raj.

After reading the post I realized its an emotional post😊

Whatever you expect from teachers is valid😊.

If you think for a while ..your favourite teacher might be the one who is not just a teacher who taught the subject. He or she might have been source of inspiration.

teaching might just be a profession for those who take it up. let's face it- not everyone takes it up for noble reasons though some do. sometimes it's the only job they can find. but irrespective, teachers are more than mere professionals to impressionable kids. for those kids, the impact of these professionals is life-long. in hindsight, i certainly feel i learned from all my teachers, supposedly even the bad ones, even if it was how not to be or what not to be. 😊
