some of us still feel responsible for the moral fibre of our students. When I step into class, I am not there just to teach. I am there to guide, support and encourage. And students appreciate it. It is reflected in their comments when they talk about teachers being "more" than teachers. My personal opinion is that one should be really passionate about being a teacher, otherwise choose another profession. Here I agree with you.Often I have seen women becoming teachers because it's a half-day job with lots of holidays; it doesn't mess up their house-wifely chores too much and there is a certain modicum of respect attached to it. What will they bring to the classroom? Here I disagree to certain extend. There are women who think about teaching like you mentioned but even they in the course of time become good teachers, good humans, . Not to say that men are all great teachers. Some choose the profession because it's the easiest to deal with if all you want to do is make money. Those who become teachers because they want to make a difference are the ones we need!
Comming from a teacher's family and being a teacher's daughter,I know about the life of a woman who take teaching as a profession. I think most of the Memebrs of DM are from towns / cities and settled in western part of world, you may not know about teachers in villages. Other than teaching these teachers from villages involved in the day to day life of students. Earlier, if some students come with out food(now govt. plans are there for giving food) these persons give them some partof their food or some time help in puchasing books/uniforms etc. Once one of the student's parents came our house to give thanks to my mother then only we know how she managed to unite the parents after their quarrels. One day usually very tidy boy appeared in dirty uniforms with out foods she noticed it and asked about and asked him to bring his father to the shool next day. And the result was the reunion. In villages teachers get more respect and they are directly involved in the well being of the society.
There may be exemptions.
Even after the years I care about some teachers becuase they inspired me a lot and nurtured my good qualities and love me as much as my parents. Still I remember them, most of them are women with all responsibilities of a house wife. I am thankfull to them.
