Just found out that one of my cousin's wife committed suicide in India. She was in her late twenties and had two kids under the age of 5. I am having a hard time trying to figure out what compelled her to do such a thing.

Don't know quite what happened....but whatever it may be, can things sometimes seem so wrong that you feel that the only way out is to end your life?

Doesnt one think of thier kids....what will become of them?

Who is to say that your soul will know rest in peace?

People who commit suicide...do they all have some sort of mental illness? This girl seemed to be "normal" for the lack of a better word.

I am really sorry for your loss. Any death is tragic and suicide can be much more devastating for friends and family. Especially, due to nagging concerns on why and how it could have been prevented.

Human psychology is complex and sometimes it is difficult to know what the person is thinking. Many people who commit suicide are people who internalize problems and never share how they really feel.

Sometimes life can be so difficult that ending it seems the best way out. Most of us fear for our lives, trying to do anything that will remotely put it in danger is a scary prospect - so when someone chooses to end their life the trauma is extreme. It is not that people do not think of their children, but life becomes so negative that they feel their own kids maybe happier without them.

Talk to friends and family to see if you can figure things out. Remember, something that may not be significant to you could have a traumatic impact on others. So keep an open mind. Finally, if you are unable to figure out why - make peace with it. Constantly thinking about the suicide will lead to more spread of distress. Make peace with the incident and try to move on. Moving all will really help the kids be able to go back to their lives and be positive. Mulling over the tragedy could lead the kids cutting themselves from society.

Sorry to hear that...

Well explained the reasons RTH.

All I can say is people surviving from attempt of suicide, are happy to be alive and enjoying the world and what they did was wrong.

Sorry to hear about your cousin's wife.. may your cousin and kids get the strength to move ahead on life!!

Basically people who commit suicide lack self confidence and dont have the guts to face the challenges!! Everyone has challenges in life, and for that one should stand upright and face it with courage which few people lack and cannot take it up or say they dont want to take it up...

Best way in such case is to share the problem with others so one can get the solution.. Few have the capability for self motivation and dont need others to give them the right motivation to lead life... But for others, they need to talk to others so they dont loose the precious life and the others should make sure to give proper motivation to them...

There are many cases where people have come to me with such problems, all I say them is - "Life is not easy and if you want life always beautiful, then there is no beauty in life!!"

wanted to reply earlier....but topic was closed?????? 😕

Notice its now open 😊

First of all, sorry to hear of your loss. Most of all for the innocent children who have been deprived of a mother that I'm sure loved them very much.

As a mother, I find the act of suicide very difficult to contemplate - simply because of my kids and the need to always be here for them, at least while they are still small and dependant on me! 😆

For this reason, I have always thought for a mother to end her life means she must have been in a very very dark place where she could simply see no light. No way ahead except for the one she took - which will always make me sad when I read such cases.

Perhaps if we as people were a little more "nice nosey" you could be alerted to the problem before its too late

by "nice nosey" I mean not nosey in the way to just want salacious gossip about people and their situations, but nice nosey interference when we suspect something is wrong. Like, not being scared to say "is everything alright - are you felling OK...."

This may encourage the person to talk and thereby alleviate some of their pain???

It's always easy to talk after the event....but my heart goes out to your cousin's family....I bet they too are wondering what more they could have done..and I wish peace for your "bhabi" and hope she is now a pain and trouble free spirit.

😡 M 😡

@bold - How would we justify people who do something really really bad and guilt of it leads them to commiting suicide, do they lack confidence/guts to face challenges ?

Depends on whether you view people who committ suicide as being rationale and in control of their mental faculties at the time. I have always believed people who committ suicide must be in an extreme mental overload and incapable of funcctioning rationally - as such, would they be in any state of mind to think they should be confident or have the guts to face whatever is challenging them.

To be honest, I think we have all had moments of huge despair, but I cannot recall ever feeling suicidal, so I can only speculate....I am certainly not in position to judge.

I believe life to be very precious and hope we can always remember that even in our bleakest moments.

They dont have the guts to face themselves 😊 They cannot accept that they are guilty.. If they do, then why would they attempt suicide 😊

@MMG - No MadmadGirl is not rationale, am inline with your thoughts.

Anu/MMG - In the scenario I mentioned, all am saying is confident personalities / gutsy people also can have a bad situation, turns thier mind unstable unable to handle a particular situation and end up with the thought of ending one's life. (Where am coming from, pls don't start bashing person in question here, thnxs - Friend of mine in college confident and a sports person (no lack of guts), caught cheating the guilt so severe that what will everyone say(including loving parents)...swallowed whole box of pills.Survived and doing great as of today...just hates remembering that afternoon when he did something stupid)

Firstly, I offer my condolences to everyone who is impacted by her death and I hope that your cousins family are able to get through this.

To answer your question about why people commit suicide...

Most often than not it's to stop the suffering. I don't think they really consider about the "afterlife" not bringing them peace or they are of the idea that "nothing can be worse than this" whatever "this" is.

There are many reasons why people commit suicide.

Some because they don't consider their life as important as a cause they believe in (commonly referred to as suicide bombers).

Some because there is an emotional pain that they just don't think will get better.

These people just don't have hope for their existence and unless they understand that their life is worth something the thoughts of suicide won't diminish and will only get stronger day by day until they actually end up killing themselves.

Some people commit suicide because they want to end some physical pain that might eventually kill them anyway. They don't want to kill themselves but they don't think there's a way for them to live with this kind of pain.

There's also accidental suicide (yes it happens) i.e. overdosing on drugs, autoerotic asphyxiation etc… Most of these people have no intention of killing themselves, they either wanted to feel the pleasure from their activities or they just wanted to escape the world for a while. Suicide was not in their agenda (though to be honest these people knew they were at risk of dying. Many like to believe that, "It won't happen to me"). They just cut too deep, popped too many pills, weren't able to take the cord off in time etc…

There might, of course, be exceptions or combinations of these types of suicides.
