Wonderful topic! 👏

Some of those views are just too funny. For God's sake, not all poetry is about flowers and nightingales! The very fact that Gulzar uses kitchen utensils in his lyrics adds a realistic dimension to the poem.

Mera Kuch Saamaan

I honestly thought that the song referred to a woman who lost her heart to a man in a night of passion and wanted it back. She wishes to forget it; to blow away the flame of passion ignited on a night drenched with rain.

The rain itself could be used metaphorically to mean other things. Romance writers have used it quite successfully, but I may be banned if I explain what I am thinking. 😳

Another example of strange lyrics by Gulzar are of BEEDI JALAILE. I have a strong suspicion that his metaphors are raunchy lyrics in disguise.

😆 Your interpretations are so cute.

Well this is how I interpret some of these terms:

Gili Gili Hassi - Laughter that has the freshness of new rain OR Laughter that sounds like raindrops falling from the sky.

Judwa Naina - Perhaps to show that she doesn't have an eye defect? 😆 Jokes apart, it could also mean that her eyes are perfect reflections of each other or are perfectly symmetrical.

Chaiyya Chaiyya - It means "Shadow" according to this link

Poetry is imagination, it is putting to pen what your mind sees. There are some who believe in structured poetry and others who do not. Ultimately poetry is something which has meaning in it, which has life in it. If the poetry touches you, if you feel the words in them, that poetry comes to life.

I do not agree with some of the discussions above.

I agree with Priya's stand here ..

The problem with this generation is we are use to of lyrics like ..

Bhege hont tere

Piyasa man mera

where you don't even need to think about it for a second ..what a person want to say . but I considere it as a death of good poetry.

Gulzar is one of the few poets who can covey emotions and unsaid expressions very beautifully in few words and leave your imagination wild to find its meaning.

While growing up I have often found Gulzar's lyrics intense and at times confusing. For long I couldn't understand the meaning of

meraa kuchh saamaan tumhaare paas padaa hai
saawan ke kuchh bheege bheege din rakhhe hain
aur mere ik khat mein liptii raat padii hai
vo raat bujhaa do
meraa vo saamaan lautaa do ..

I still don't know if I understand the meaning in its entirety. 😊

Do post the songs the meaning of which you couldn't understand. BTW I am not talking about meaningless lyrics here.😆

Gulzar is Outstanding! I have no words to express what a gift he is to POETRY itself!

Maya, I believe you were a kiddo when the movie Ijaazat was released. I wasn't a budhhiya myself, but significantly older 😊.. Please do watch it now and check the lyrics out in the SITUATION..
Anuradha Patel sends this poem to her lover Nasiruddin (who married the woman he was engaged to in his childhood). The heart break has been unbearable for Anuradha but what hurts her the most is that Nasir and his wife send her "STUFF" back to her. The materialistic things like her scarf and her goggles...
In response to that, she pours her heart in this poem and cries how there are countless MOMENTS and EMOTIONS that she vested in Nasir and shared with him and they all lie where he is and it is FUTILE to imagine he could RETURN everything he took from her.
The entire poem describes very sweet and romantic moments the couple shared

The verse you jotted down above mentions a suggestive love letter and the romantic thoughts in that letter to be returned.
"Materials don't matter- emotions do" and materialistic things could be returned, but moments and feelings are never to be returned- this concept has been put into fascinating lyrics by Gulzar. I am in love with him 😊.
I don't see any heartbreak song written with this concept in mind avoiding all the melodrama..

My personal favorites 😳-
patjhas main kuch patton ke girne kee aahat
kaanon main ek baar pahan ke laut aai thee
patajhad kee vo saakh abhi tak kaanp rahi hai
vo saakh gira do, mera vo saamaan lauta do

ek akeli chhataree main jab aadhe aadhe bheeg rahe the
aadhe sookhe aadhe geele, sukha to main le aaye thee
geela man shayad bistar ke paas pada ho
vo bhijwa do, mera vo saamaan lauta do

Beautiful explanation mqt, as always. Like you, I love the man and his pen... he is amazing.

And yeah, the song is so beautiful, each one can derive a different meaning from it.

QT, I was a kiddo when I first heard the song. My parents screened such movies so I didn't get to watch it till I was older😳. But I understood the lyrics much later. I had given the exact same explanation in a previous post on this thread. It is not about materialistic things but she wants the time they spent together and memories erased too.

Gulzar is my fav. too but often I have wondered if he really had something intense to convey or was he literally meaning that. If former is the case then as Tanaz mentioned even 'Beedi jalaile' has a very "different" meaning.😛

Wonderful narration QT...and agree about the magic of lyrics by Gulzaar.. I heard and saw the song on TV couple of years back and sort of understood it the way you explained it. Havent seen the movie yet. Although I wonder if she(Anuradha) really wanted him to return her emotional "samaan" as that would have been even more devastating and negated the love they shared for each other.

Some of my fav Gulzaar songs are Dil Hoom hoom kare (Rudaali) , Tujse naaraz nahi zindagi (Massom) , Pani pani re (Maachis), Jiy ajale (Dil se), Tere Bina zindagi se shikva to nahi, Roz roz aankhon tale , Labon se choom lo ankhon se tham lo(aastha) and songs from Fiza 😊. Some of his new compositions are not comparable to his earlier ones.
