Expectations and Gender Issues

Did you ever wonder why pink is referred to a girl color, or why certain jobs have more employees of one gender?

Aren't these all stereotypes, I mean like these are all biased accusations. For example, one day my family was discussing what do you want to be when you grow up {im still a teen}? I said that I wanted to be either an engineer or a cop; the first thing that came from my sister's mouth was " gay" a commonly used word in todays society… Then my family pressured me and told me to do something better like becoming a teacher or nurse. When I asked why, they said that I'm not fit for the job.

Why is it that some folks today still think that girls should be weak, caring, kind, respectful, smart and all good qualities, while boys should be boys? Meaning that they should be rough, tough, cool, messy etc. Some people also go the extent that women should be the sidekick or assistant? Why can we be the big boss and leader? These are all biased stereotypes that are also passed on by our own family members… C'mon who'd want their 4-year-old son to have the idea of becoming a hair-stylist, some families will tell their children to follow their heart while some families make the choice for their children…

(I'm sorry for boys out there if I offended you in any way, this topic wasn't meant so)

How do you feel about these expectations and gender issues in todays society?

yes, I understand what you are saying. When I was younger, I didn't understand the ways of the world, what stereotyping was, all I knew was I wanted to help people in this world. So I decided I wanted to become a doctor. My mother came from a rural village where there isn't much money, education, or anything, and when my mother married my father-who is from a rich side of the family, my father's side didn't accept the marriage- when I was born...alot of my relatives said that I would be fit to work at a fast food restuarant or something of low standards b/c I was a girl and not a boy.... but today, I have top scores in all my classes and my future lookings promising...why was I discriminated just because I was a female and not a male? I can do anything that any male can do...so why should I be working at a fast food resturant when males can have all the better jobs and everything...still today I see these stereotypes in other's families and its a shame... 😕
