http://www.americanbazaaronline.com/2015/08/12/indians-got-86-of-h-1b-visas-for-tech-firms-issued-by-the-us-in-2014/

New data reveals that 86% of the total H1B visas issued in 2014 for technology firms was used to hire IT professionals from India.

The data accessed by Computerworld through Right of Information Act, reveals that a lion share of visas issued for computer jobs are claimed by Indians.

On the other hand, China, which accounts for the third largest immigrant group in the US, behind Mexico and India, has used only 5% of H-1B visas for computer professionals.

So we are a country who have come thus far on the back of mediocrity. I bet none of the crying quota party are in the ISRO teams.
Kind of reminds you of communism. Those who are going to get jobs anyway and all sorts of perks including faster promotions than the general category, have no incentive to work hard. And those who are very capable but have little chance of ever making it, are either demoralized or leave the country for greener pastures.

Yay for reservations. 😆😆

The problem is deeper than what it seems.

I dont exactly know what is prompting the Patels to demand for reservation.

The government has to rationalise it's reservation policy. It should be based on the economic status rather than the caste they belong to.

Times have changed. We see SCs/STs/OBCs soaring high having benefited from the reservation. It's criminal wastage of law and money that well-to-do reserved castes can avail welfare benefits they don't deserve.

Ill stop. I feel like I'm plagiarising points from newspapers articles 😆 ..read good articles from The Hindu. You'll understand all that u have to 😆

My doubt though --- There are some who say that despite being economically empowered they are still ostracised for belonging to "that" caste. This argument is put forward in support for continuing the present reservation policy. Any opinions?

I haven't read through the posts but no..reservation shouldn't be ABOLISHED.

One should understand the basic tenets of our constitution. The idea behind having reservation was to bring the underprivileged into the mainstream development. The idea was equity in growth and development. Benefits of development barely touch some sections or pockets of our society.

There are still people(people from these same caste could be benefitting from the policy, there are two ends of a spectrum in our country, we shouldn't be blind to it) communities in the fringes of our society that are still incapable of availing the basic amenities. These people need help, support because of their backwardness(eg. Tribal communities) ..even if an originally backward family are able to get their child to school, there are cases where child cannot study due to lack of electricity, conveyance issues etc.

One should understand the problems deeply entrenched in our highly complex and heterogeneous Indian landscape. It really takes generations to move along with the mainstream Indian growth, unless one generation sees skyrocketting growth in their quality of life owing to a life-changing career.

Yes, there are people gaining undue benefits owing to their caste.

Hence, reservation policy has to be revised, revamped, rationalized by taking into account the economic position of the family rather than their caste. Annual income should be taken into consideration along with the educational qualifications of the said bread-winner(s) [so as to rule out discrepancies] .

But doing away with this policy is sure to leave certain people behind which can be disastrous for the nation as a whole, not only those families.

You brought out some good points ALD. To the above isnt it a shame that after nearly 70 years of reservation policy the REAL PROBLEM of ostracism on account of caste still persists? The focus should have been on wiping out that sort of discrimination.

I think the number of times that a family can take advantage of the reservation should be limited . Not more than 3-4 generations at the most. By then they should have been able to take off on their own and other people from the community can avail the chance. What is generally seen is that only a few affluent or influential families prosper and the rest of the community continues to lag behind.

Secondly instead of relaxing cutoff marks it would be better to give coaching opportunities and financial help to come at par with the rest. Why lower the qualifying standards? It harms rather than help the cause. Its bad for anyone's self esteem.
