Based on some resources, I can understand, why Patels started the agitation. They put up two choices. One of the choices was grant them also reservation. And the other one was scrap the reservation system altogether. And the more important point here is they want the second choice and not exactly they want the reservation. Definitely the reservation system in India, is making more and more upper caste groups of people insecure about their future and that is what is the cause of this type of agitation. If India is to improve. reservation system has to be abolished altogether.

Look at one more point. Probably when they started the reservation system in 1950s, they had some good objective for that. The objective they wanted to achieve has failed. Why do we have to continue with something which doesn't work?

Anyway, don't they know caste system exists only in Hinduism that's why so many convert to escape the atrocities which we subject them to everyday.

Does that mean that reservation is a sort of retribution and not only for giving level field to the deprived?

That's an interesting take. 😊 Its time to scrap it all together and if other groups join in the movement it could become stronger. The govt will be forced to do some serious thinking.

Not only upper caste but also some who are already enjoying OBC status would be worried because if the Patels succeed in getting themselves included for reservation it could eat into the existing OBC seats.😛

It may not work for the majority population but it works for those benefitting from it and also for the politicians who have vested interests in continuing such policies.

These Patels seem to have a lot of clout in Gujarat though.
Leuva Patels and Kadva Patels call themselves descendants of Luv and Kush respectively.

Patels felt marginalised inside the Congress party and many of them had migrated to BJP. The Congress hardly missed them because its KHAM (Kshatriya, Harijan, Adivasi, Muslim) social combination had brought it a record-breaking 148 seats in the February 1985 assembly elections. Within weeks a violent anti-reservation agitation had transformed into Hindu-Muslim communal riots.

Solanki had to go: his formidable majority in the assembly was of no help, for the Patels controlled the streets. This was also the beginning of BJP's ascent in Gujarat.

Since then no government has messed around - with the Patels:

Sardar Vallabhai Patel was a Leuva. Kdva Patels hang on to Sardar Patel legacy and the Leuvas hate this.

Kadva Patidar sub-caste is found most in districts of saurashtra region like Rajkot,Junagadh,Jamnagar and Bhavnagar.Kadva Patel are well know for this business acumen these days and dominate major industries in gujarat till date while the Leuva Patidar sub-caste are mainly found in the Charotar Region (which is known also known as Charotar Leuva Patidars) (Kheda, Anand), Mehsana, Kanam (Vadodara, Bharuch, Panchmahal), South Gujarat and Saurastra region.

The word "Patel" derives from "Patidar," meaning "the holder of Pati or Patta."

Let a cabinet minister die while taking treatment from a doctor who got an MBBS seat just because he belonged to reserved category and then see if something good happens or not.

Chandramukhi, The first thing the cabinet ministers do is get treatment in USA or UK at Indian Govt: expense. They are scared to take treatment in the hands of the doctors who made it to hospitals through reservation.

Yes and even if they go to hospitals like AIIMS, they make sure a merit candidate doctor treats them not the quota party.

I was being sarcastic. Muslims are supposed to be all equal so what's the journo yapping on about Haider something.

Umm yeah! I know but the circumstances can drop them in such situation. Btw i was just suggesting a way how a appropriate step can be taken to abolosh the reservation.
The reservation prevails in AIIMS as well!

Ibnbatuta no, not all muslims are equal, idk what's the criteria in reserving seats for only a small no. of Muslims and Sikhs but yes seats are reserved for muslims as well.

Islam has no caste system technically. Politicians are giving reservations to create newer vote banks. Sikhs have a pretty stringent caste system in reality.
