I was recently in the US and happened to speak to people, upper middle class local people and immigrants. When it comes to nanny, they never pay so much money as stipulated. Infact immigrants from latin america always get paid less, this hypocrisy of standard payment has been raised by americans themselves. Housekeepers etc are paid not on hourly basis, but more like a weekly contract.
And the entire issue would not have been focussed so much, had the housekeeper been of any other faith.
There is a long standing problem of illegal immigrants or people like nannies, housekeepers of Indian diplomats who come with diplomats but refuse to leave USA or other developed countries because of the opportunity.
How are we so sure the maid is completely blameless, the lawyer who is fighting for her has no ulterior motive or the homeland security just needed an excuse to get into the Indian consulate maybe?

And as for clean and transparent behaviour of american diplomats while treating their employees or the pristine way of equality in which employees are treated by americans, there can be questions there too. Its not like rich people always suffer for their mis treatment and law breaking all the time. There is corruption everywhere in the world, in all countries, rich or poor.

I am not saying Devyani is right. She may or may not be wrong, pending trial. But the appalling way she was treated is what caused such widespread protest and raised voices even within America. She is a diplomat, she was not supposed to be strip searched or cavity swapped if it indeed is true.
Rest assured, if she commits a crime, she should be punished. Indian people have this sense of entitlement where they think if they are rich and powerful they can get away with everything. But matters should be investigated and conclusions should not be drawn.

The $4,500 was Devyani's own salary that she had mistakenly mentioned in the minimum wage category. As far the so-called "mis-treatment" of the maid, I think Angie's post took care of that part. I don't know why somebody is still hell-bent on portraying Devyani as a criminal when she is not. Can't let go of the passion breathed so exuberantly, Je suppose? 😉

That I can believe. That she isn't even capable of filling out a simple form. Is that why her father (and other father figures in her life of which there are a plenty) had to intervene at every stage of her career to push her to the proverbial top?

^^Not relevant to the discussion. She did not commit a "crime".

it would become relevant to the crime if she (or her attorney) claims that in the court though. just as if I am accused of murder and I say that the victim walked into my knife...jury wouldn't buy it.

^^Comically invalid comparison with an implausible example.

1. she didn't pay as per the form. last i heard, she will be tried.

2. she (and/or her attorney and /or supporters) claim that she filled out the form incorrectly.

3. i said i can believe that based on what i read about how she ascended in her career. in the same vein, i said the jury isn't going to buy that type of a concoction. i illustrated with a simple example why that would be a hard pill to swallow to anybody.

stop me when this gets too complicated.

Its glaringly evident that it was a mistake. Last I checked, nobody in their sane frame of mind would agree to pay their domestic help an amount equal to their own salary. So yes, plenty of scope for the jury to "buy" this since Devyani couldn't have benefitted from this misrepresentation in any way.

^^And all I gotta say is that we are debating innocence and guilt, not legal outcome.
