@ return to hades

Ah, well thanks for the opinion..I ll go through the recommended YouTube channel but it is highly unlikely that it will answer my questions satisfactorily.. I am pretty sure what I am talking about here..

1. Both men & women need to fight the patriarchal mindset for the betterment of the human society..

2. I also believe that it is absolutely prudent that people of all kinds & genders need to join hands for this cause..

3. I firmly believe that feminism is not the solution..

4. Why should men be stripped off of their gender identity to fight this battle ?.. I know feminists claim that feminism never demands such an absurd thing..but irrespective of what feminists claim or believe , the fact remains that the terminology of 'feminism' is itself extremely female driven..the word surpasses all the claims & beliefs put forth by feminists..

5. Solution - a gender neutral terminology.. I believe that it is absolutely prudent that the terminology be made gender neutral or else its unfair to men & even women if u really think about it..the terminology itself isolates the female kind to fight this messed up battle on their own..

6. If gender-equality & societal justice is indeed the motive of the said concept then I dont see how & why , feminists could have an objection to changing the foundation of the terminology to a gender neutral base..unless of course there are certain 'other' hidden prerogative that nobody is talking about..

7. Now having said that , I ll still maintain that in societies plagued by patriarchal evils , feminism in its truest form & honest meaning a.k.a. 'a movement designed to win equal rights for women' is still a necessity but when we are dealing with societies which treats women justly , feminism should be replaced by a gender-neutral term..

The name feminism comes from the fact that it started out as uplifting women (suffrage, right to work etc.).

Society sees masculine and feminine as binary. Strong, assertive, powerful, in-charge, stern, rugged, athletic are all considered "manly" and "positive" traits. Weak, sensitive, soft spoken, nurturing, small, petite, effeminate, dainty are all considered "girly" and "negative" traits. The goal is to uplift these "feminine" traits erase the "negative" connotation and make all qualities "equal" and "human". Hence "feminism".

A gender neutral concept doesn't work because you are implicitly suggesting that "feminism" is negative. It is counterproductive and conflicting to the whole purpose. A gender neutral term won't be as successful in uplifting "feminine" traits that are considered negative.

When a society has certain groups lagging behind, the key focus is to bring those group up to speed with the others. When racism prevails, the dialogue should be what can we do to bring colored minorities equal to the white majority. When that is accomplished society truly becomes color blind. When homophobia prevails, the dialogue should be what can we do to give gay couples the same rights as heterosexual couples. When that is accomplished relationships will just be relationships. When sexism prevails, the dialogue should be what can we do to bring women on par with men. When that is accomplished there won't be dual standards on how we treat gender.

At least that is how I view social changes need to be accomplished. I understand that others feel that universal principle of equality can accomplish the same. I'm very skeptical of it.

Coming back to feminism, I wholeheartedly agree with the rest of your concepts that men and women are equally in this together. Racism couldn't be addressed without the white people who marched in the civil rights movement. Gay rights wouldn't exist without the help of straight allies. Feminism cannot go anywhere without equal support from men.

Lets just first understand feminism because what you are indicating is a very narrow , perception based opinion. Feminism by oxford dictionary - the advocacy of women's rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes. Will quote the recent excellent speech by Emma Watson here ,"For the record, feminism by definition is:

"The belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. It is the theory of the political, economic and social equality of the sexes."

The interpretation of this is upto an individual. Just because the term has a feminine tone to it doesn't mean it's favouring one particular gender.

The stress is more towards empowering women and their rights because the gap is huge, there is no denying about it. Hence the aggressive propaganda , to hit out the message of equality, even if it means sometimes giving opportunities to them just because they have been denied for long and still are fighting a very active battle.

It is not about taking the rights from one gender and giving it to another. It is about bringing the two together on the same platform.

Feminism as a phenomena has a history of more than 100 years, it was originated at a time when women had minimum rights and no say in their lives or in society. Hence the concept of bra burning etc were launched to start a movement . The popularity of such practices were used to spread the message and to empower women to fight for their rights. These terms might seem negative but back then they were needed and required. Tell me if you think women empowerment is a negative term ? It also has a feminine touch ? So why does it seen in such a positive light?

The word feminism is needed or justified to an extend because it is primarily about addressing the fact that our society focuses on being "manly" as successful, so we need the "fem" focus for now to help balance out everything - and then we can become equalitists .

Also it means when a man , who understands the true meaning of being feminism and it's principle of gender equality , says that , "He is a feminist ", it makes gender a very neutral term . The attention goes to the word feminist because we take it as a female term when the whole message and sentence is making the most gender neutralizing point- He and feminist, together .

@ Blue : Totally Agree ...

@ Red : Totally disagree.. simply bcoz i find the logic applied too horrendous to accept..how on earth does a 'gender-neutral' term imply that 'feminine traits/qualities' are negative ?..if anything , it will serve the opposite purpose for which it was intended in the first place..perhaps this lapse of judgement comes from a belief that unless & until feminism & everything feminine is crowned as queen/king of the world , there is no hope whatsoever..i dont think thats the right approach..if anything this kind of approach might end up sinking its own ship..this kind of exaggerated marketing/promotion of this concept will successfully aid in loosing the support of the people rather than gaining it since when u start to gloss over something to this extent, people are bound to be suspicious about the actual intent & purpose of the concept..these attempts seem desperate & futile..

Everybody knows 'feminism' is meant for 'women's rights' & not 'men's rights'..its there in the name..the name itself is self-isolating..the name itself makes it crystal clear that it has got nothing to do with 'men's rights'..and when u make it a point to include as much saintly notions as possible in this single very limited term/concept , u r not increasing the good will but actually quite the opposite..

Just as women hate to see men in control , do you think men will be thrilled about letting women take the full control ?..and this exaggerated feminism sounds like something intent on doing something on the similar lines irrespective of what u believe..

To be honest i never understood the negativity surrounding 'feminism'.. how can something designed to win just equal rights be considered negative even in the slightest way ?.. as far as i am concerned , its impossible to do so..but modern feminists with their own perceptions make it seem possible..actually they have made it possible..feminism is indeed viewed in a negative light & now i cant say that it is without a reason either...

@ Blue : Totally agree..

@ Red : Okies..u must have ur own reasons for that..& to certain extent it is even valid bcoz even i feel that feminism is still required in regions plagued by patriarchal evils but i firmly believe that if people put in enough efforts in achieving gender-neutrality-equality ,as in, just let people be who they are irrespective of everything & let everyone have equal rights ,it could work wonders..because i genuinely feel that after a certain limit , feminism is not that much different from patriarchy..both are extreme concepts..and both place unreasonable expectations on both the sexes..so far it seems everybody agrees that patriarchy was unfair to men as well but if u remember our previous discussion , u would know that feminism with its twisted perceptions is no different either , it too is in some ways unfair to women as well.. and so a proper solution in my opinion is the one independent of masculinity or femininity but completely based on people-neutrality-equality a.k.a people's rights..yes, it can be brushed off as a concept applicable only in an ideal world with ideal conditions but i think we should work towards building an ideal world & ideal conditions , whether we achieve it or not is a different matter altogether..and i dont think either of the extreme concepts are the way to go..and i also dont think attempts to present one of the extreme concept as an extremely valid concept will help either..

I have already had this debate with return-to-hades & i am not having it again..

The definition of feminism presented by return-to-hades , Emma Watson ..etc are just their perceptions of feminism which i feel are inspired by an insane desire to hail "FEMINISM" on every platform even if it takes completely modifying the concept to suite their argument..for the last time, yes the tone of the terminology is certainly very very feminine but so are the intentions & purposes of the concept..everything else is just an exaggeration and nothing more !..

Feminism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Feminism is a collection of movements and ideologies aimed at defining, establishing, and defending equal political, economic, cultural, and social rights for women.

And it will remain the same even if God himself/herself comes up with his/her own interpretations & perceptions..

This debate was already done & over with here : Feminism in india..feel free to go through it..

Thank You !..

And just to be clear , I do too support Feminism as in " women's rights" & i never hesitated from calling myself a 'male feminist' prior to being introduced to modern twisted feminism..i have a serious issue with this glossed over , exaggerated 'feminism' .. and i believe i have cleared out the same sufficiently..

@ Charmingenie..
My intention here was not to start a debate on feminism ( what it stands for , what it represents..etc)...that was already done and over with.. fine, if u believe that ur brand of feminism is the honest brand, i respect your opinion.. but what i was looking forward to was an opinion in the following matter :

If you have any suggestions/opinions regarding the same , do share.. but please spare me the divine feminism..

Haha , cool , it's just an opinion on what you stated.
If you don't agree with Emma's version, Hadey or mine then good for you. But a wiki reference is as absurd . Will you buy a more concrete academic definition which is published as thousands of journals over the last century and I can promise you they all will differ and vary in explaining feminism. It's a term like any other , which can be interpreted in whatever manner by an individual. It has undergone changes over all these years and decades, hence the summation and subtraction from it's meaning from time to time.
Just like freedom, Independence , equality and selishness have so many meanings , a neutral concept like feminism can be interpreted in whichever way.

Quoting you , " i never hesitated from calling myself a 'male feminist' prior to being introduced to modern twisted feminism"...

A curious question, feel free to ignore , but before you were introduced to whatever modern notion of feminism - Were you perfectly ok being called a "male feminist" , so what changed? Have you stopped believing in the "old" feminism which according to you was about women's right and not twisted?

Why cannot we take pride and say , Yes I am a feminist but my definition of feminism is .. XYZ? Why demean a concept and a phenomena which is essential and whose basic premise we all agree?

Oh I respect you enough and trust that your ideas of feminism and women empowerment are encouraging. Doubt I would need to teach their importance to anyone in this modern world. But I was merely curious about why so much reaction and unnecessary stress on the negative connotation of an all too innocent sounding word , especially when as you mentioned at one point you have no problems being addressed as a feminist. Extremities exist everywhere.

Honestly , Feminism is no rocket science irrespective of what all the modern feminists claim it to be..it was a simple & important movement designed for uplifting the status of women in a society plagued by patriarchal evils..thats where it got its name too , encouraging & uplifting females .a.k.a. 'feminism'..

Freedom, Independence,Equality,Selfishness,Selflessness etc are generic terms with a valid meaning applicable in & changing as per the different contexts.. Feminism on the other hand was/is a 'movement'.. would you say the meaning of the "Quit India Movement" has evolved over the years ?.. certain concepts are down in the dictionary & represent one thing ..the difference between the "Quit India Movement" & "Feminism" is that unlike the former, the latter is still existent & had to endure a certain type of evolution.. an evolution that made the word loose its meaning..now everybody seems to have their own meaning & perceptions about this term.. and perceptions cant be validated..definitions certainly can be..

Thats a good question & perhaps you may find the answer here : https://www.indiaforums.com/forum/post/115872451

Through discussions here i realized that modern twisted feminism is too twisted for me hold on to..the word has lost all its meaning..and i dont see any point in holding onto it any longer..evolution, multiple perceptions, twisted perceptions has done its damage..i mean it has reached a point where self proclaimed feminists now recommend promoting feminism to help a male rape victim !.. i dont see any help in that but i do sense certain insidious intentions there...so to sum up, i have now realized that 'feminism' is an outdated concept & has become sinister over time..with time it has lost its meaning & should be replaced with something that makes more sense.. i am no more a feminist..i cannot / would not dare to call myself a feminist anymore , however , i certainly do stand by people-gender-equality-neutrality.. i think thats more suitable & acceptable considering the current sorry state of feminism..

P.S.. considering the multiple twisted perceptions & its evil intentions , i would rather call myself a 'women's rights supporter' than a 'feminist'...

I like how simplified and suffice this is . Sadly this simplicity has become a complex problem that we have been unable to solve for years now. Perhaps , while it is no rocket science , its not so that simple also. But then again, personal opinions.

Freedom, Independence,Equality,Selfishness,Selflessness etc are generic terms with a valid meaning applicable in & changing as per the different contexts.. Well agreed Quit India movement is static and has not changed, similarly 1848's declaration of sentiments, 1920's right to vote for women all achieved under the wave and patronage of feminism stand unchanged , part of history. Even the bra-burning parade and it's relevant of that day remains significantly unchanged. But like freedom which for India at that point meant removing of slavery and driving Britishers out, now refers to "corruption free India". One word different meaning over the years. Similarly, feminism has undergone see of differences over the years. It's upto us which we want to focus on. Like freedom , feminism is broad. Freedom for a child can be eating an extra chocolate and feminism for some loony be castrating males. The key is defining your own doctrine.
Islam is well defined and documented so is Christianity and Hinduism, but we do modify and carve out our own meanings and definitions , so why now do the same with feminism.

P.S.. considering the multiple twisted perceptions & its evil intentions , i would rather call myself a 'women's rights supporter' rather than a 'feminist'...
Alas, I am stuck being a feminist who will hold on to it's meaning of equality for all. Promise no evil intentions there😆
