NEW DELHI: India has said that Hindi should be included as one of the languages used by the United Nations as it was spoken by a substantial percentage of the world population.

Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma said that an international Hindi conference will be held in New York early next year as part of efforts to popularise further the language in the world arena.

"Hindi should be included in the United Nations. A substantial percentage of the world population uses this language," Sharma said here on Saturday evening after launching the Hindi website of the Ministry of External Affairs.

With emphasis being laid on greater use of Hindi, MEA launched the website in this language as part of an effort to make available the country's foreign policy to a much wider populace.

The Hindi website www.Mea.Gov.In, developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC), will initially be a mirror image of the Ministry's English version and its further development is expected later.

Sharma said the Hindi website will help in creating greater awareness among the people about the government's policy and perspectives on important foreign affairs issues.

"It will go a long way in generating interests in Indian democracy, literature, culture, arts and socio-economic development," he said.

The MEA is already engaged actively in implementation of the Official Language Policy of the government and is playing an important role in promotion of Hindi abroad.

Regional Hindi conferences are held every year in different countries and in the current year, these conclaves have been held in Australia, Abu Dhabi and Tokyo.

************************

Even after more than 50 years of Independence, Hindi still gets neglected, gets raw deal compared to English and is ill-treated, looked down upon. Why, why, why?

I am talking about middle/upper middle/elite class.

It is out National Language, it should be respected and efforts should be made to see that it spreads all over India and that people learn it even in Non-Hindi areas. The effort should start at the bottom but alas, our leadership uses it only when compulsary and then disposes it off. Why does English still get Royal treatment in India?

There is this English paagalpan or obsession going on in India. Every parent wants his/her child to learn English and study in English Medium School. Everyone wants to become a brown Saheb, want to speak in fluent English.

Whenever it comes to Hindi vs English debate, the argument always is oho, Hindi is not spoken across India...English is a unifying language without it India would break. What rubbish, if any language deserves to be the National language then it is Hindi, ofcourse it is not mother tongue of > 50% of Indians but that hardly matters bec'se Indians are multi-lingual, and most of Indian can speak or atleast understand Hindi. And those who do not understand it can be taught gradually...

Another argument is English is necessary to compete globally, haha...what have we achieved in 50 years, China/South Korea/Taiwan/Malasiya/Thailand...they all are ahead of us and are example of how nations can progress without learning a particular language. I have no problem with English being taught as a language but why should non-language subjects be in English medium, why ain't our Medical/Engineering and other Professional courses are in Hindi, why ain't their books translated in Hindi yet. It is not a Rocket Science...it boggles my mind.

Bollywood is Hindi Film Industry, but when one listens to interviews of Bollywood stars...it is difficult to make out if they really work in Hindi Film Industry. Even when they are interviewed on Hindi Channels, they always break into English invariably. Arre bhai, Hindi ka itna sammaan to karo...aap jo kuchh bhi hain Hindi ki vajah se.

Why a certain group wants to preserve English? To consolidate their power, to see that there hold on Indian centres of Power ain't weakened?

True, I wonder how can we reverse that. What can be done to develop a strong sense of proudness in speaking Hindi?

I have been living in Canada for 8 years now .. and I have always spoken Hindi with my parents, grandparents, and other relatives ..whether at home or outside.

And when I go to India, my cousins speak English with me 😕 ... And they feel I'm backwards because I'm still hindi speaking after having lived abroad for so many years.

I dont understand why they are not proud of their own language? Even in Canada, I have a few cousins who speak English all the time. But in this case, I feel its the parents fault. The parents constantly speak in English, even after being born & raised in India for so long. If they want they can encourage their kids to speak Hindi at home ... but instead they start speaking English. So somehere it could be the parents fault.

But people living in India, are becoming too "American". This is just my view so no offence. I am not saying that all Indians are crazy about becoming American. But a lot of them are ... at least the ones I've met.

I totally agree with you 👏

Unfortunately, I don't know Hindi as well as I would like to. My parents have been in the U.S. for over 20 years now and basically- we all talk in English now.

And I dont really like it. I have tried to get everyone to speak Hindi more often, but speaking English has become a habit. I feel like I am losing out on everything from India and soon everyone will forget all those things we have held dear for so long.

And if India itself is willing to give these things up and try to become like other nations and people, then there is no hope.

I dont understand why people think its a matter of pride to dump their own culture and behave like Americans- why they think knowing English means being Educated. 😕

And as far as languages go- English isnt even the easiest language to learn. Its not even the most understandable or beautiful- so why is it so special? Just because 'modern' countries speak it? Why dont you try and make Hindi special? Why dont you try and be the nation that others want to be like??

yeh debate hindi ke baare main hai to mein Hindi mein hi baat karti hun.

sabse pehli example to yahi hai ke jaise ab mein Hindi mein baat kar rahi hun mein yeh feel karoon ke "arre yaar sabhi English bole rahe hain agar mein Hindi bolungi to shayad logon ko yeh lagega ke mujhe English nahi aati " yeh soch kar sayad mein bhi English mein bolna shuru kar doon , Hindi bolna chahte huye bhi.iss tarah aaj kal hamari society hi aisi ho gayi hai ke kuch logon ko na chahte huye bhi English mein baat karni padti hai. lekin yeh sirf ghar ke bahar hota hai.

main to yeh kahoongi ke sabse jayada responsibiliry parents ki hai India mein bhi and foreign mein bhi ke apne bachon ko Hindi sikhne ke liye encourege karen . sirf bolna hi nahi Hindi padni aur likhni bhi sikhani chahiye.

every indian should learn hindi first,
then their background language (gujju should learn gujju, sindhi should learn sindhi, etc.)
,then they should learn their regional laguage (if you live in pujab then learn punjabi, etc.)
,then comes english just for internationl stuff

i disagree

my mother tongue is hindi

but i feel it is a irrelevant language

a language is useful if it is able to give u jobs , help grow a business or enhace career prospects

if hindi is not able to do that we should not complain abt it not getting the respect it deserves

on the contrary i would recommend everybody to learn english chinese spanish and as many foreign languages as possible

this holds true not only for hindi but other languages like tamil and telugu also

tamilians are more regionalistic abt tamil than hindi speaking ppl which is also wrong

pls remeber that before english came into existence ppl were learning persian and till abt 60 yrs ago ppl used to learn in hindi in nastaliq script ( urdu ) to enhance their career prospects

if tomorrow the world is dominated by india
all countries will start learning hindi
same goes for chinese

nobody respected japanese as a language worth studying till it became a major power in the world

kya har cheez ka use hona jaroori hai ? kyonki hindi aane se jobs nahin milti to iska matlab yeh nahin ki tum apni bhasha ko hi chor do... does anybody give you 100% guarantee that if you know English, CHinese or Spanish you will be given a job 😕 ..no, then why this treatment to Hindi.
Hum indians ki yeh aadat hi hai ki jo dusri countries mein ho raha hai wohi India mein bhi ho..hum log copy cats hain. we just adapt or take up bad things from different cultures and never take up good things.
mein puri tarah se baki logon se sahmat hun ki yeh sab parents ki galti hai ki woh apne bachhon ko Hindi nahin sikhate kyonki woh sochte hain ki Hindi mein baat karne se unka standard kam ho jayega. Mein US mein rahti hun but ghar pe mein mere bachhon ke saath Hindi mein hi baat karti hun taki woh logon ko bhi hindi aaye. jab har country apni bhasha ko barava deti hai to hum log kyon nahin ?
ab to Bush ne bhi bola hai ki Americans ko Hindi sikhani chhaiye agar woh world mein competitive rahna chahte hain to...

Hindi doesn't get recognition because many people living in India don't give it the deserved respect. Why anyone else would make Hindi a special place? In India, youth is so much eager to talk in English. They run after western culture. If you want to give Hindi an international recognition, you need to start at home.

I am very proud of Indians living in Canda. I don't know about Hindi, but Punjabi is taught in Canadian schools and alsp as a foreign language. It's the language that you can take test in DMV. It's like Spanish in USA. Many of my friends in Canada take Punjabi rather than french or Spanish in their HIgh School.
