There is no person as a loved leader, not really, not completely.

The point is that most people let others lead because they are feared. Others might let them lead but never appreciate them. So, you take the lead and all, but not all your followers appreciate you for what you're doing, ever. Some are jealous, some are following out of fear, only a few love you for what you're doing, and respect your acts.

I'll give you the example of my favorite teacher. She is this mentor to me, a most admirable figure I know. Most of my classmates dun like her, because they think she acts in a very haughty manner, like she's better than everyone else because she speaks perfect English. Only a handful realize how amazing and supportive and warm she is. But when she comes to conduct her classes, everyone no matter how much they dislike her, they are all TOTALLY quiet. And that's sadly because they fear her, not everyone sees how much she thinks for the welfare of her students. As far as jealousy goes, every teacher at school dislikes her, they have issues with her authority, her way of conducting her classes. It's only natural, she shouldn't be getting the respect she really deserves. :)

true, there really isn't someone as a "loved" leader..well not in the softy way that is. From the examples shown of military leaders, teachers, movies even, i get that now. I guess its more of respect. you will respect your leader if they have the ability to lead as a leader should, like someone had mentioned in their comment.

But i guess some have to resort to instilling fear in their people to make it easier but in the end as long as the fear method works does it matter if the people respect the leader or not? Should a leader care if he's respected or not? because surely respect in a leader will only make following commands easier just as or more effectively than fear?

I Guess you are right, it's not either of them but both and other qualities too.A Leader most have the calibre to stand out...there are lots of atout and combinations...He should be loved and feared[at a positive point] and respected and most of all know how to conduct out his people.

Tell you what, if you worry about what your acts would be taken as by your people, you wouldn't be able to do them in the first place. So, a leader is not supposed to care about their work's reception when they do take command, only, over time, they do command respect, and that a handful may give em, others might not. But in any way you see it, effectiveness out of fear is as good as no effect at all, cause, you are not making a real difference that way. :)

Those who are saying that a leader only needs to be capable of one thing - get the job done, is missing one point. If it's a team work then to get the job done the leader has got to get his team to cooperate with him/ her. There has to be something in the leader to make the teammates cooperate, whether it be love, fear, respect or something else. Alone and with a uncooperative team, a leader will never be able to get the job done.
