The kings in India too used to have many wives earlier. One reason cud have been the lack of men as many wud have perished in the war.
Other reason cud b for strategic alliance with neighbouring kings.

Actually good point you made there, i thought it was 5 wives because Islam has 5 pillars of Islam.
One thing i would like to point out that, practice of more than one wife is not encouraged, the conditions are restricted and in order to marry again one needs an legitimate reason. Nowdays the only reason for having more than one wife is arising because of the sexual desire...this is wrong, totally wrong. Marriage should not be an advantage for the guy to fulfil more sexual desires rather to support..
Also the guy has to do justice to the treatment and treat each one of them equally and fair , for example divide his love and time for each of them equally...now only the prophets, extra-ordinary were able to do that...ordinary people's love would fluctuate and giving each one of them their fair of share is rather impossible...
In such a case, second marriage itself is a sin.

Heck, I too can't think of any reasons why any one would like to make his/her life a living hell with marrying more than a person (people who have a spouse knows what I mean - maintaining one family is a killing job!). But then again, I have never understood why would people like to have an abortion without a logical reason, get engaged in premarital sex when hat could be harmful to the individual in the long run, practice in sadomasochism and BDSM acts with their partner...but then again, I think we all are different. I may not like or understand the motive behind ones action, but that's no reason for me to stop him do it simply because I do not understand their way of life. 😊

Though, to be honest, I am split when it comes to such relation.

oh yeah, you are right there,

but if a lifestyle is followed by one in a million i think it surely tells us that the person following it has more chances of being strange rather than the 9,99,999 not following it , and hence i am in agreement with banning such a practise.
