Hindustan means the land of Hindus not land of those speaking Hindi.

very much developing yes but still very backward. the government needs to build enough educational institutions to educate the young indians as they are the future of india.

of course not, national cultures are important to oneself not only to india but the rest of the world. even when globalization was the popular ideology, nations and states still hold true to their own cultures. even though at that time globalization was everywhere, in india, in japan etc, still these countries keep their cultures. and even if the ideology of globalization had not stopped, it is undeniable to say that even if globalization took its full swings, there are still traces of national cultures in every country.

i think the problem is that the ppl in southern states feel that hindi is a lang alien to their culture & is being imposed on them by ppl from northern states. whenever there is feeling of insecurity one tends to oppose it.

[true..........thats my point.........we have no probs in people learning hindi........i have learned hindi........ but the problem is with people trying to make it compulsory in all states telling that it is the language of majority......
even English is not compulsory here...its our choice....
Hindi might be benificial for people who want to stay at north.and english is benificial for people who want to live at south....however, just bcos hindi is spoken by majority, it shld not be made compulsory.....
i had learned hindi.but even now, i do not find much use for that language when compared to English or my regional language... i might find use........might be when i change my recidence to some north indian place..... but till then?

the problem is only with those people, who consider hindi to be something great.....and force us to learn hindi....thats the title of the thread....."Whats wrong in not learning hindi". No one else if forcing their regional language on others.so why is hindi so special............it is after just another language of India...

Lakshmi - a very quick question - why English? What makes you choose English over Hindi( considering that you feel just accepting a language spoken in another part of the country as a sign of their domination, what makes you choose English which was not born in India but in a foreign land whose people coined the word colonisation, and executed it perfectly wherever they could) .
Hindi is the regional language of five different states in India - Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, and Himachal Pradesh. Mind you, all these states also have many regional languages with different dialects which they consider as their native language, but overall the states recognise Hindi as their main language. Also, it is spoken by a large number of people in Bihar, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Punjab and even in Andhra Pradesh.
Which means Hindi is the ONLY language which is officially spoken in more than one state, and fluently in more than 10 states and by default becomes the language of the majority of people.
Hindi is also the close Marathi, Gujrati, Urdu, Himachali and Punjabi.
Hence my question - why English and not Hindi?

i agree!! hindi is seen as a regional language from the north and not very much use in the southern states of india. plus, the people of southern india also want to conserve their language and cultures. that is why when the government were trying to impose hindi as the national language the southern states opposed this very earnestly.

i agree with lakshmim_84. if a person wants to learn hindi then by all means learn it but there is no need to force everybody in india to learn and study hindi.
